Then it's time to explore the shopping streets of the old corsair town, before admiring the iconic façades of Saint-Jean-de-Luz as well as those of the houses of the Infanta and Louis XIV. Open to visitors, the Italian-style house of the Infanta Joanoenia, which was the residence of the Infanta of Spain in June 1660 at the time of her wedding to Louis XIV, contains the so-called Infanta's Chamber and a beautifully decorated 17th-century lounge. Places to see in ( Saint Jean de Luz - France ) Eglise Saint Jean Baptiste
The church Saint-Jean-Baptiste is located in the town of Saint-Jean-de-Luz , in the French department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques . It is renowned for its altarpiece of the xvii th century gilded wood, probably the most monumental altarpieces of the Basque Country , and the memory of an exceptional event: it is here that was celebrated the marriage of the King of France Louis XIV with the Infanta Maria Theresa of Spain , theJune 9, 1660. The church is classified as historical monuments by decree of the March 7 , 1931.
The history of the church begins well before the marriage of Louis XIV and Marie-Thérèse. In the xii th century, a Romanesque church gathered around her the houses of the small town, built between sea and marsh. Saint-Jean-de-Luz, Donibane Lohitzun: Luz is the contraction of Lohitzun , which means swampy, in Basque.
Over the following centuries, crossing the English domination, the Hundred Years War , the Spanish invasion, the city was burned down several times, and the church suffers, already in 1419, then under François I er , in 1523, 1542 , 1558. one can still nowadays, discover the remains of the Gothic church of the xv th century: a pillar, several stone ridges, hidden windows, west and south walls. Three beautiful windows carved up the south wall date from the end of the xvi th century or the beginning of the xvii th century; they are equipped inside with cushions, small stone benches vis-à-vis.
The December 5, 1630, The bayle, jurats and community of Saint-Jean-de-Luz decide to enlarge the sanctuary, then too small for a population of 12 000 inhabitants, in a city made prosperous by the whaling, fishing with cod and trade in the West Indies. The works, interrupted several times, will last half a century.
At the time of the marriage of Louis XIV, in 1660, the church is in full construction. From the old church, only the south wall - that along the present street Gambetta- and the bell tower - will be preserved, which will gain an additional floor in 1685. Already in June 1660, the south wall was extended to the walls of the new choir, built several meters behind the existing altar. A door was opened in 1650: it is the one that crosses the royal couple on the wedding day.
This monumental altarpiece, carved gilded wood, occupies the entire height of the bottom wall of the apse , and the two wings that flank it. Eighteen statues of saints, two allegories, the dove representing the Holy Spirit, the figure of God the Father and the symbolic Pelican surround the double-drum tabernacle, surrounded by colonnades of twisted barrels decorated with vines, flowers, foliage, birds, laughing toddlers. All ordered according to the rigor of the classic canons and decorated with motifs to the antique: grandeur and pump in the image of the likes of the Sun King, builder, at the same time, the Palace of Versailles .

St Jean de Luz is one of the most reputed seaside destinations on the Basque coast. It is familial and sporty and animated all year long thank to many festivals and thalassotherapy center. Its large beach located downtown attracts families thanks to three dams rendering the Atlantic more calm for swimming. The view is out of the ordinary with a coast of picturesque houses and Basque charm and another view of Socoa, another destination with its fort.
Outside of the city all the way to Guétary, we find several sand beaches offering diversity for everyone including surfers who will find the right wave for their levels. We can also benefit from the mountainous environment as the bay of St Jean de Luz is surrounded by the Labourd and Guipuzcoa mountains.
St Jean de Luz is also a touristic base for discovering Pays Basque and even for going to the north of Spain, located less than thirty minutes away. North of St Jean de Luz, the beaches of Biarritz make up some of the most beautiful beaches of the Pyrenees Atlantiques, from Anglet the beaches extend over several kilometers (however, the destination is is very animated in the summer).
