Latin Quarter, Saint-Michel in Paris. The soul of the French capital.
The Left Bank has been able to preserve the soul of the French capital. Walk through the Latin Quarter’s crooked cobblestone streets and you’ll think you’re inside a black and white Robert Doisneau photo. A place frozen in time! Extending over much of the 5th arrondissement, today’s Latin Quarter remains the center of the city’s university life, full of book shops, literary cafés, art house cinemas. A historic center of learning, scholarship and artistic achievement in Paris, The Latin Quarter's mystique is well-merited. The heart of St. Michel is still the Place St. Michel 0:26-1:00 with its baroque fountain of St. Michel killing a demon. This was once the site of numerous protests and social uprisings. One of the main events of French resistance to the occupying Nazis took place in the square, and in the riots of 1968 during which students took charge of the square, declaring it an independent state! Another place sight not to miss is Shakspear &Co. Founded by Sylvia Beach in the 20's, this became a focal point for expatriate Americans such as Hemmingway and the Irishman James Joyce. It was actually Sylvia Beach who finally agreed to publish Joyce's much-rejected novel, Ulysses. The shop was later taken over by George Whitman who is an iconic figure in the American ex-pat community. He is now is his 90's and the shop is run by his daughter. Another highlight is the Notre Dame de Paris, also called Notre Dame Cathedral, 2:05. It is the most famous of the Gothic cathedrals of the Middle Ages and is distinguished for its size, antiquity, and architectural beauty. Enjoy!

Our visit Porto travel guide documentary covers some of the top attractions including a food guide to Portuguese cuisine, top sightseeing tourist attractions including visiting churches, monasteries, parks, wineries, bridges, quirky neighborhoods and museums. 10 Things to do in Porto, Portugal Travel Guide Video Transcript: (OPORTO)
Lisbon is beautiful, but Porto is magical. We arrived in Porto with our taxi driver’s words still ringing in our ears, and we’re happy to say, the city did not disappoint!
Our time in Porto was spent sipping on Port wine, soaking in the views across the Douro River, wandering through the hilly streets, and marvelling at buildings covered in blue tiles.
In this travel guide, we’re going to share a little bit of Porto’s magic with you, and also show you some of the things you too can see, eat, and drink when you visit Porto!
Known as the Chapel of Souls, this church is covered in tiles that represent moments in the life of Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint Catherine.
This bookstore is a feast for the eyes. The bookstore was even frequented by JK Rowling when she taught English in Porto, and it’s reported to have been an inspiration in her Harry Potter series.
We continued our walk downhill until we reached the São Bento Train Station.
Porto Cathedral is one of the oldest landmarks in the city with cloisters where the walls are covered in blue tiles.
We reached the neighbourhood of Ribeira, which sits right on the shores of the Douro River. This neighbourhood is lined with many sidewalk cafes, bars, and restaurants, so it’s a nice place to rest your legs and do a bit of people watching. Feeling hungry we wandered down some of the back streets until we found a small restaurant serving up local specialities.
We made time for one more attraction: the Church of Saint Francis.
The Bridge we had all been waiting for was Dom Luis the first Bridge, which spans the Douro River. The lower deck carries regular traffic with narrow walkways for those on foot, and the upper deck is reserved for pedestrians and the metro lines.
For the best views of Porto, you need to walk the upper deck!
There was only one thing on our minds: visit one of the many wineries that line this side of the river! We ended up walking into Croft for a wine tasting without need for an appointment, and this turned out to be one of our favourite activities in Porto!
Filled to the brim with port wine, cheese and chocolate, we enjoyed a light stroll along the Douro River, watching the boats bob in the water.
That’s a wrap for our visit to Porto! We hope you guys enjoyed following along and that you got a few ideas for your own trip. If you have any other suggestions of fun things to do in and around Porto, feel free to share those with travellers in the comments below.
This is part of our Travel in Portugal video series showcasing Portuguese food, Portuguese culture and Portuguese cuisine.

Harry Potter London Magic Walking Tour and Film Locations
Harry Potter London Magic Walking Tour and Film Locations
London's favourite guide takes you to all the main Harry Potter film locations in London on this magical walking tour.
Joolz Guides retraces the steps of Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley as he visits the ministry of magic, the leaky cauldron, diagon alley and more on this tour of the London film locations!
Did you know that they actually used three different locations in London for The Leaky Cauldron. One is in Borough Market in The Prisoner of Azkaban, one is in Charing Cross Road and the first one used in The Philosophers Stone (The Sorcerors Stone) is in Leadenhall Market.
The divination stairway where Hermione wknocks the crystal ball down is in St Paul's Cathedral and we also go past the Millenium Bridge which the death eaters destroyed in Harry Potter and The Half Blood Prince. From London Bridge you get a good view of the route that HArry , Hermione and Ron Weasley took as they fly towards Grimauld Place on their brook sticks.
Joolz apparates to Piccadilly Circus just like in the Deathly Hallows and also nearly goes under a bus! We also visit the location where they filmed Platform 9 and 3 quarters which is in Kings Cross Station which is conveniently near the Harry Potter shop where you can buy school uniforms of Gryffindor or Slitherin and the other houses before you head off on a magical walking tour with Joolz towards Diagon Alley and the ministry of magic in Whitehall.

A New Year in Style. Parisian Chic men, women, and couples.
New Year decorations in Paris linger until mid January and sometimes longer but at some point they are removed along with Christmas trees everywhere. That's when Parisians plunge into the new year with a sense of hope and great style. Spend an afternoon strolling around Café De Flore in Saint Germain or Champs-Elyseés and you’ll see immaculately dressed men and women in the middle of January. While there are many versions of French chic, the one thing common to all looks is making an effort and putting a lot of thought into an outfit, but making sure it looks effortless. The Parisian Man, like his Parisian female counterpart pays attention to what he wears. He embraces the notion of a Luxury Basic. It starts with clothes at a higher quality and lower quantity, particularly when it comes to their everyday wear. They are big on impeccable fit, wearing clothes that highlight the silhouette in dark colors 2:42, 3:07, 4:09. For traditional, luxury suiting, they like super slim fit. Minimalist, unstructured blazers and pants by French designers. It's all about showing up in something which looks like it was just thrown together but actually took a lot of thought and effort. Enjoy!!!

Take a tour of Notre Dame de la Garde in Marseille, France -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions series by GeoBeats.
Seeing the Notre Dame de la Garde is one of Marseille's high points.
The church is built on the highest point in the city, a historical lookout point.
The current basilica was constructed in the 19th century but a church has stood here since 1241.
Now, it stands as a popular beacon every year for pilgrims on Assumption Day.
The breath-taking sanctuary is dominated by gold-backed mosaics and a rainbow of colored marbles.
The cupolas feature biblical images, such as Noah's ark and the burning bush.
Because of its role as a lookout, the church offers spectacular views of Marseille and the Mediterranean.
