The Archeological Museum of Nice-Cimiez is located on the outskirts of the ancient city of Cemenelum (Cimiez), between the amphitheatre and the three thermes from the third century. There, the visitor will find archeological remains from Nice-Cimiez and elsewhere.
The Kemenelon Hill (Cemenelum) was a base of the Ligures Vediantii (Vediantians) between the third and second centuries BC, and was subsequently chosen by Augustus (14 BC) as the site for the capital city of the Alpes Maritimae province. The archeological site incorporates three ensembles of baths built between the second and third century AD.
Once extricated from the earth that had accumulated over centuries, this ancient sports and leisure complex revealed among other things swimming pools, cold, tepid, and hot baths, steam rooms, and gymnasiums, covering an area of nearly two hectares.
After some destruction at the end of the fourth century, the erection of an Early Christian cathedral and baptistery stand as final manifestations of urban life in the fifth century.
