Riding the whirlpools of the world's strongest tidal current at Saltstraumen, Norway
The whirlpools of Saltstraumen are the world's most powerful maelstrom. They are situated 10 kilometres south-east of the city of Bodø in Norway. Their impressive strength is caused by the world's strongest tide passing through a narrow channel which connects with the huge Skjerstadfjord and causes a colossal tide which in turn produces the maelstrom. Our visit to the malestrom was on a RIB, and was lead by a Norwegian ex-special forces hard man. This exciting excursion was one of several real eye-openers we enjoyed whilst on a Bergen-Kirkenes-Bergen trip with the Hurtigruten ship, MS Richard With.

OurTour at the The World's Strongest Maelstrom at Salstraumen, Arctic Norway
South of Bodo In north Norway is the Saltstraumen, the world's strongest tidal current. Every six hours a maelstrom forces millions of gallons of water through a small straight. About two hours before an 'out' maelstrom Jay went fishing, it was the best fishing experience ever (see our other videos and our blog - ourtour.co.uk).
Norwegian Nature: Saltstraumen on an autumn day
Saltstraumen in the municipality of Bodø in Northern Norway on an autumn day. Saltstraumen is the strongest tidal current in the world. Up to 400,000,000 cubic metres of seawater forces its way through a 3 kilometre long and 150 metre wide strait every six hours. Whirlpools or maelstroms up to 10 metres in diameter and 5 metres in depth are formed when the current is at its strongest
