Samara (Russian: Сама́ра; IPA: [sɐˈmarə]), known from 1935 to 1991 as Kuybyshev (Куйбышев; IPA: [ˈkujbɨʂɨf]), is the sixth largest city in Russia and the administrative center of Samara Oblast. It is situated in the southeastern part of European Russia at the confluence of the Volga and Samara Rivers on the east bank of the Volga. The Volga acts as the city's western boundary; across the river are the Zhiguli Mountains, after which the local beer (Zhigulyovskoye) is named. The northern boundary is formed by the Sokolyi Hills and by the steppes in the south and east. The land within the city boundaries covers 46,597 hectares (115,140 acres).

Samara was known as Kuybyshev from 1935 to 1991. it is the sixth largest city in Russia. it lies along the Volga River. And capital of an eponymous region. Samara was officially founded in 1586 with the construction of a Russian fortress on the Volga. However, settlement there had been mentioned since at least the 14th century.
CULTURE
As a cultural Centre, Samara has attracted several famous creative Russians. The likes of writers Tolstoy and Gorky, painters Ilya Repin, Vasily Surikov and Ivan Aivazovsky, and revolutionaries Michael Frunze and Vladimir Lenin have all lived in the city. House-Museum of Vladimir Lenin in Samara is an object of cultural heritage.
TRANSPORT
Samara is a major transport hub. The city is served by Kurumoch International Airport which has international connections from Dubai, Frankfurt and Prague. Domestic, there are up to ten departures daily from Moscow as well as direct flights to Samara from many other major Russian cities. The new railway station building was completed in 2001.Samara is a major river port.
SCIENCE
During the post-war period evacuated aircraft industry and scientific base, as well as development of the Volga-Urals oilfield, helped Samara to grow rapidly and become one the most important centers of aerospace science and industry. The city has contributed a lot to Soviet achievements during the Space Race.
TOURISM:
There are a lot of various historical buildings in Samara which make the city precious from the architectural point of view. Samara has a lot of statues, monuments and memorials, memorial boards as well as monuments to technological advances. Samara Embankment, the longest in Russia (about 5 km), is one of the main sights of the city. Kuibyshev Square is the largest square in Europe.
