After the stunning ride through the Andes mountains from Chile to Argentina we make it to Mendoza in Argentina just on the other side of the mountain. The sun is out, beautiful day, and somehow I'm still walking in the shade everywhere in this Argentine city! So many tall trees casting shade over all the streets and on both sides. This is the greenest city I have ever seen. Mendoza is famous for its wine, specifically Malbec, but nobody told me about all the trees! Real pleasure to walk around this city and do a sightseeing tour. In the shade, and do I need it after a long night of Argentinian asado and wine catching up with friends who just came back from Tierra del Fuego. Walk around the huge General San Martin park. Travel to Cerro de la Gloria on the motorcycle at the end of the day. Once at the top the police officer told us we had one minute for pictures and then had to leave since the place was closed. So the Mendoza region is the main wine region in South America but since I have limited time my focus was on nature in the city.

Guided English or Spanish pedal tours of Buenos Aires are available from Bike Tours. The three-and-a-half to four-hour informative ride goes through key districts, including Puerto Madero, La Boca, San Telmo and the Plaza de Mayo. The tour includes the use of a three-gear bike, a helmet, a bottle of water and rain gear if necessary. Child seats are available.

Bus tours

Day and night bus tours of Buenos Aires and its surrounds visit popular areas, such as La Boca. If you can stand the sunshine, then open-topped buses are best; some of the coach tours make it difficult to properly take in the scenery. Travel Line Argentina provides a wide range of tours, while Buenos Aires Tur offers a tour of the city as well as explorations outside.

The Buenos Aires tourist office stocks maps detailing 17 self-guided tours around the city's most appealing neighbourhoods. Cicerones de Buenos Aires is a non-profit greeter programme for tourists to explore the city with a local resident. The guides are all volunteers who know and love their city.

San Antonio de Areco

Around 100km (60 miles) from Buenos Aires, San Antonio de Areco is a rustic town that trades on its gaucho heritage. Souvenir shops sell gaucho handicrafts made from leather, silver and ceramics, and the town features leafy, stone-paved streets and buildings from the 19th century. One of these buildings is now the Museo Gauchesco Ricardo Güiraldes, which recreates a traditional estancia (ranch), complete with gaucho artefacts. For a real estancia experience, nearby Los Dos Hermanos, provides a warm welcome to visitors on day trips, but booking is essential.


Tigre

A pleasant day trip from Buenos Aires, Tigre is a riverside town on an island in the Paraná Delta, just 30km (19 miles) away. The focus is at the Estación Fluvial (River Terminal), offering boat trips on the waterways of the Paraná Delta. Tigre is also home to one of South America's largest amusement parks, Parque de la Costa. Only a few blocks away from the station is the daily Puerto de Frutos (fruit market), which is now a market for local handicrafts. Trains leave from Buenos Aires's Retiro Station (Linea Mitre) regularly, and the journey takes 50 minutes.

Hotel Valencia Riverwalk San Antonio Review

The Hotel Valencia Riverwalk is the first boutique hotel in San Antonio, Texas. Having recently gone through a multi-million dollar renovation it is located right in the center of the city along a quiet part of the popular Riverwalk. My room had a balcony overlooking the courtyard and a nicely designed bathroom. The lobby area has a large lounge and living area for guests as well as a bar / cafe and Argentinian restaurant called Dorrego's. For breakfast each morning speciality coffees and delicious scones are offered complimentary.
