For my last week in Mexico we went on a big road trip in Chiapas for more than a week. Starting in Tuxtla we explored a number of beautiful sights and things to do in Chiapas which can hardly be found in guides. Of course we also wanted to visit popular sights such as Palenque but we managed to make our way down along the border to Guatemala to see the beautiful jungle and the maya sights of Bonampak & Yaxchilan which are harder to access.
You can take this video as a guide but please be aware to take some precaution and do your own research about road conditions / road blocks etc. before you go. Please make sure to avoid driving at night and plan your travel schedule accordingly!

this might be the cheapest city in mexico
With $10 in hand, we're attempting to see if San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas has the lowest prices in Mexico.
►Subscribe to our channel!
Today we are attempting to exchange the price of one US movie ticket for a full day's worth of food and drinks. We love doing this $10 challenge in new cities because it forces us to try new food, explore parts of the town we've never seen, and break out of our shell.
We were shocked by some of the prices in San Cristobal de las Casas. Beyond food, the cost of living in Chiapas seems...well, you'll have to watch today's Mexico travel vlog and find out!
RESTAURANTS WE RECOMMEND IN SAN CRISTOBAL
1. El Tostador - excellent, fresh coffee with incredible prices!
2. El Ciprés - Delicious breakfast (especially those garlic potatoes) with some the lowest prices in town.
3. La Viña de Bacco - we recommend it for the cheap drinks ONLY (not the food)
4. Pachamama - Tasty pizza and salads, plus some well-priced wine and drinks.
5. Kinoki - A cool restaurant with an upstairs balcony, perfect for people watching. The oven-baked potatoes and pasta is great!
6. Restaurante Plaza Real - Breakfast combos (80 pesos and up) that will leave you stuffed! The food is also amazing.
7. El Frayle - We haven't tried anything except the sopes, but those were the best I'd tried in all of Mexico!
8. Carajillo Cafe - Another great place to try Chiapas coffee, or beans from other regions of Mexico for that matter. Not only are the atmosphere and food excellent, you get the coffee made right at your table with an explanation of the process.
WHAT TO DO IN SAN CRISTOBAL DE LAS CASAS
1. Walk around Mercado Santo Domingo where you'll find thousands of handmade treasures, unique to this city.
2. Visit Iglesia De Guadalupe and enjoy the picturesque view of the entire city—preferrably at another time of year so you avoid the rockets and other explosives.
3. Hang out in Plaza de Paz where you can buy local pastries from the area, soak in the view of Catedral de San Cristóbal, and people watch.
4. Try the local coffee. We recommend El Tostador especially, but you can find good local coffee almost anywhere.
5. Sample the food. Food in San Cristóbal de Las Casas is so flavorful, rich, and unique. Try as much of it as you can!
6. Enjoy everything there is to see, do, and taste while strolling on one of the many walking streets. You have everything from shops, vendors, restaurants, street music, and everything in between.
7. Get off the tourist path. We enjoyed doing what most tourists do in the city, but we strongly suggest you look into what this Pueblo Magico has to offer on the side streets, the nature, and those hidden gems you can only find from going out and exploring.

Is San Cristobal OVERRATED?
We're sharing the real deal about San Cristobal de las Casas - the safety, prices, people, and more.

In today's Mexico travel video, we are closing out our trip in San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas. We've now been here for 10 days and NOT looking forward to leaving because we love this Pueblo Magico so much! Unfortunately, the last full day was spent inside mostly because Maddie got sick. That's not stopping us from enjoying some last bits of joy from this Chiapas Pueblo Magico (magic town).
Before we leave the city, we are introducing a new feature in our videos, a rating system to provide you with more in-depth information about the city we visited. These ratings take into consideration other Mexican cities we've spent time in and how the current one compares. In the future, we think this will just be a small part of the end of our last Mexico travel video in a city. We share our ratings in the video and categories we include are:
ENVIRONMENT / POLLUTION IN SAN CRISTOBAL
With constant wind, lots of nature surrounding the city, and not much traffic, the pollution in San Cristóbal is almost nonexistent.
CLEANLINESS
We didn't notice much trash around the city and the community keeps things quite clean. The only problem we have in this category is that there is a LOT of graffiti.
AFFORDABILITY
If you saw our last Mexico travel video in this city, you know we think San Cristobal de las Casas is the cheapest city in Mexico of the ones we've visited.
WALKABILITY
This is a fairly small city, meaning you can walk to just about everything in town without needing a car or taxi. You also have car-free walking streets in San Cristobal. Some things that might trip you up (literally) are the slippery stone sidewalks, which are very narrow.
TRAFFIC
To our delight, the city doesn't have much traffic at all. This might be because the streets are narrow, which make driving difficult. Also, public parking is limited.
THE PEOPLE IN SAN CRISTOBAL
There is a diverse mixture of local people and those from all over the world. You might think this would create some tension or issues, but people get along quite well despite the language and cultural differences. This is one feature that makes San Cristobal de las Casas a great place to visit and feel comfortable. There is one aspect about the people of this city we felt was less than desirable, as discussed in the video.
SAN CRISTOBAL WEATHER
We prefer warmer weather, so the cooler temperatures in San Cristobal were not our favorite.
SAFETY
Although we only stayed in this city for 10 days, we felt perfectly safe during our time.
ENGLISH PRESENCE
Many of the travelers in this city speak English and it does seem like there is a decent English-speaking expat community here. Some of the locals seem to have adapted to the travelers and also speak English. It also appears that school kids are learning the language as well. We know this because we were interviewed by them in English in the plaza a few times.
INTERNET
The internet wasn't consistently fast, but we were still able to upload videos while in the city. It gets better the closer you are to the center of town.
THINGS TO DO
You might guess that since San Cristobal is a small city, it isn't flush with things to do. That being said, there are still muesums, plenty of shops, and lots to do in the nature surrounding the town.
TANGERINE TRAVELS RATING
Find out what we really think of San Cristobal de las Casas in the video! :)
What do you think of our new rating system? Should we go into all this detail in future videos or would you prefer a brief rating in each category at the end of the video?

Everybody's CRAZY about SAN CRISTOBAL DE LAS CASAS!!
Said to be the BEST Pueblo Magico of all, we're here to find out why San Cristóbal de las Casas is so magical.
►Subscribe to our channel!
We are traveling in Mexico and it's our first time in the state of Chiapas. We decided to visit the Pueblo Mágico, San Cristóbal de las Casas. The former president of Mexico said this Magic Town is THE most magical of all the Pueblos Mágicos. With all the hype, we were extra excited to visit this mountain town and see what the food, culture, nature, and people are like.
Like many places in Mexico, San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas totally surprised us! It's an absolute melting pot of travelers from Europe, the United States, Mexico, and also a large population of indigenous people. With so many groups of people, it's no surprise that this is a city rich in culture. We were also pretty shocked to find out the expat community is quite large as well.
Find out our deeper thoughts on the town of San Cristobal de las Casas in today's travel Mexico vlog. We also talk about what it was like driving in Mexico from Veracruz to Chiapas 2018.

ONE WEEK IN CHIAPAS, MEXICO | Mayan Ruins, Canyons & UNREAL Waterfalls
Chiapas isn't just one of the coolest regions of Mexico, it's also one of the most amazing places I've travelled to date. The Chiapas region in Mexico is PACKED with things to see, including some of the best waterfalls, Maya ruins and seriously impressive natural landscapes.
In December 2017, I took a one week roadtrip with @brendanvanson @backpackersteve and @kickthegrind from Mexico City to Chiapas to explore some of the best things to do in Chiapas. We were all blown away by just how beautiful the Chiapas region of Mexico is and how much is has to offer for tourists.
The crazy thing is that there isn't much tourism in Chiapas. Mexico is a popular tourist destination for tourists from all over the world, but Chiapas is still a real hidden gem. We had nearly all the tourist sites we visited completely to ourselves - even the giant Mayan ruins and temples! I just can't believe there aren't more tourists in Chiapas.
I hope this video inspires you to consider Chiapas for your next vacation. And if you're thinking about heading to Mexico, I hope it will get you excited to visit Mexico too! You can see more great locations in Mexico in my Mexico City vlogs and Ouxaca food vlog:
