The tallest dunes in North America are the centerpiece in a diverse landscape of grasslands, wetlands, conifer and aspen forests, alpine lakes, and tundra. Experience this diversity through hiking, sand sledding, splashing in Medano Creek, wildlife watching, and more.
History
Great Sand Dunes National Monument was one of the many United States national parks and monuments created during the Great Depression (1932). In its original form it covered only the dunes themselves. However, it has expanded significantly since its roots, due in large part to concern among residents of nearby communities about the need to protect the watershed containing the dunes. Recent actions in 2000 and 2004 led first to the creation of a preserve adjoining the monument, and then to the designation of the combined monument/preserve as a full-fledged national park.
Landscape
The park includes North America's tallest dunes, which rise over 750 feet high against the rugged Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The wind-shaped dunes glow beneath the rugged backdrop of the mountains. This geologic wonderland contains over 30 square miles of massive dunes, and also includes alpine lakes and tundra, six peaks over 13,000' in elevation, ancient spruce and pine forests, large stands of aspen and cottonwood, grasslands, and wetlands--all habitat for diverse wildlife and plant species.
Climate
In the summer, daytime air temperatures rarely reach 90 °F, with average temperatures in the 70s-80s °F. Summer nights are surprisingly cool thanks to the elevation of 8200' above sea level, with lows sometimes dropping into the 40s. Afternoon thundershowers are common in July and August with associated winds and lightning. Be prepared to leave the dunes promptly if thunderstorms threaten: lightning strikes are common and may be fatal.
Fall is generally mild, with Indian summer days. Highs average in the 60s - 70s °F, with chilly nights in the 20s - 30s °F. Be prepared, though, for the occasional cold fall storm, bringing icy rain or even snow.
Cold temperatures are the norm in winter, even though sunshine is generally abundant. The lowest temperature recorded at Great Sand Dunes was -25 deg;F in 1963. Average highs are in the 20s-40s °F, with lows averaging -5 to 15 deg;F. Snow may fall and high winds may occasionally occur, so bring warm, layered clothing and sturdy footwear.
Spring can bring high winds; March, April, and May winds are unstable and can be unusually strong. Temperatures can vary widely: highs may reach into the 60s °F, or only into the 30s °F with an even colder wind-chill. Lows can also vary from 0 deg;F to the 30s °F. March and April are the snowiest months of the year, but some days in spring can also be swimsuit weather.
The average annual precipitation is 11 inches including an average snowfall of 37 inches. Overall, precipitation increases in all directions as you leave the heart of the San Luis Valley. Yearly there are only 30-40 days when clouds obstruct the sun the majority of the day. The valley is known as the Land of Cool Sunshine and lives up to that name throughout most of the year.

Hanne Strong moved there with her husband in the late 1970's. An old man, locals called the Prophet, approached her and said he had a vision that she was 'chosen' to set up a centre for the word's spiritual traditions and that the centre would teach people how to evolve and live with nature.
Through a twist of fate, a failed real estate venture prepared the area for habitation with roadworks, electricity and water put in along the mountain range.
Hanne established the Manitou Foundation with the help of some wealthy benefactors and started giving away land grants to various spiritual, educational, and environmental groups.
Manitou has since established the largest intentional, interfaith, and ecumenical retreat center and sustainable teaching community in North America having granted over 2000 acres of land.
Approximately twenty thousand retreatants visiting each year, seeking to develop inner peace and balance with oneself and nature.

Southern California (colloquially known as SoCal) is a geographic and cultural region that generally comprises California's southernmost counties, and is the second most populous urban agglomerations in the United States.[1][2] The region is traditionally described as eight counties, based on demographics and economic ties: Imperial, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, Santa Barbara, and Ventura.[3] The more extensive 10-county definition, which includes Kern and San Luis Obispo counties, is also used and is based on historical political divisions.[1]
The 8-county and 10-county definitions are not used for the greater Southern California Megaregion, one of the 11 megaregions of the United States. The megaregion is more expansive, extending east into Las Vegas, Nevada and south across the Mexican border into Tijuana.
Southern California includes the heavily built-up urban area which stretches along the Pacific coast from Ventura through the Greater Los Angeles area and the Inland Empire, and down to Greater San Diego. Southern California's population encompasses seven metropolitan areas: the Los Angeles metropolitan area (Los Angeles and Orange counties), the Inland Empire (Riverside and San Bernardino counties), the San Diego metropolitan area, the Oxnard–Thousand Oaks–Ventura metropolitan area, the Santa Barbara metropolitan area, the San Luis Obispo metropolitan area, and the El Centro area. The Los Angeles area has over 12 million inhabitants, while the Riverside-San Bernardino area has over 4 million inhabitants and the San Diego area has over 3 million inhabitants. For Combined Statistical Area (CSA) purposes, the five counties of Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, and Ventura, are all combined to make up the Greater Los Angeles area with over 17.5 million people, the second-most populous U.S. combined statistical area, after the New York metropolitan area. With over 22 million people, southern California contains roughly 60 percent of California's population.
The Colorado Desert and the Colorado River are located on southern California's eastern border with Arizona, and the Mojave Desert is located north on California's Nevada border. Southern California's southern border is part of the Mexico–United States border.

Costilla County was the first area of Colorado to be settled by European-Americans. Hispanic settlers from Taos, New Mexico, officially established San Luis on April 9, 1851. Costilla County was one of the original 17 counties created by the Territory of Colorado on November 1, 1861. The county was named for the Costilla River. Although San Miguel was originally designated the county seat, the county government was moved to San Luis in 1863.
The county's original boundaries extended over much of south-central Colorado. Much of the northern portion became part of Saguache County in 1866, and the western portions were folded into Hinsdale and Rio Grande counties in 1874. Costilla County arrived at its modern boundaries in 1913 when Alamosa County was created from its northwest portions.[4]

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,230 square miles (3,200 km2), of which 1,227 square miles (3,180 km2) is land and 304 square miles (790 km2) (0.3%) is water.[5]

Great Sand Dunes Colorado USA / June 2015
Great Sand Dunes National Park is at the foot of Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Approximately 38 miles northeast of Alamosa, Colorado. Legends says, wagons trains have vanished among the dunes. Some dunes are 750 feet high and strange creatures inhabit the inner areas. At the dunes sleds and sand boards are available for rent.

Coors Field

Denver Art Museum
More than 40,000 works of art are housed in the two magnificent buildings that make up the Denver Art Museum in the heart of downtown Denver. The main building was designed by I M Pei, architect of the Louvre pyramid in Paris, while the huge expanse of the Hamilton building was designed by Daniel Libeskind. The museum contains collections of American, European and Asian art, but the undoubted highlight is the fabulous collection of Native American art.

Denver Museum of Nature and Science
The Denver Museum of Nature and Science is a great space in which to explore the earth and the creatures that live on it. Denver Zoo

Denver's breweries
Every October, nearly 50,000 beer lovers congregate in Denver for the Great American Beer Festival to get merry on Denver's best brews. The most popular is the Coors Brewery, located in Golden, which is the largest single brewery in the world. Guided 90-minute tours are available, following the entire brewing process, from roasting barley to bottling. There are free beer samples for those over the age of 21 years old.
The microbreweries and brewpubs serve and brew in-house distinctive beer that won't be found elsewhere. Denver's best brewpubs are all within walking distance of each other in LoDo. Each brewpub offers tours and tiny samples of their ales, porters, stouts and lagers. The best include Wynkoop Brewing Company, Rock Bottom Brewery and Breckenridge Brewery.

Elitch Gardens Theme and Water Park
Colorado's largest amusement park is conveniently located right on the outskirts of downtown Denver. There are a number of thrill rides that'll get your stomach turning, as well as family rides and kids' rides that don't involve as much screaming. If it's a hot day, head to the water park and jump in the Commotion Ocean that's a giant wave pool ideal for relaxing or body surfing.
