It was the end of February and it was time for us do do a visa run to Laos, so we caught a night train to Nong Khai, together with Ian and Robin. Apart from doing our visa run we spent some nice time in Nong Khai as well as renting motorbikes which we road 90 kilometers up the Mekong River to a little place called Sangkhom.

Wat Pa Phu Kon in Udon Thani
Wat Pa Phu Kon is one such temple. Located high in the mountains in Na Yung District, approximately 120 kilometers Northwest of Udon Thani city, the temple was built only a couple of years ago but has a lot to offer those willing and able to make the steep drive to visit it.
The main attraction, besides the beautiful and serene natural surroundings, is the 20-meter long reclining Buddha, which is made from 43 blocks of exquisite Italian Carrara Marble, each weighing about 15-30 tons and which was shipped to Thailand by boat. The cost of the statue, thought to be in excess of 50 million baht (about 1.5 million US dollars) was paid for by a very generous donation from an elderly woman in honour of the King.
Wat Pa Phu Kon’s splendid isolation and peaceful, natural environment makes it an ideal spot for some meditation, and numerous buildings have sprung up on the mountain to house groups of meditation enthusiasts, offering a perfect refuge for those seeking solitude and tranquility, far away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
