The Sault Ste. Marie Canal is a National Historic Site in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, and is part of the national park system, managed by Parks Canada. It includes a lock to bypass the rapids on the St. Marys River. The first canal on the site opened in 1798, but was destroyed in 1814 during the War of 1812. The latest canal dates to 1895, and formed part of the shipping route from the Atlantic Ocean to Lake Superior, along with the two locks on the US side of the river. One of the walls of the lock collapsed in 1987 and the canal was closed to traffic. In 1998 a smaller lock was opened within the original canal. It is suitable for smaller boats and mostly used for pleasure craft.

Crossing the Sault Ste Marie International Bridge into Canada

I rainy drive on the final couple of miles of Interstate 75 North in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and across the International Bridge into Canada.

WEEKEND ADVENTURES in SAULT STE MARIE (The Soo) - Let's Discover ON (first time in Northern Ontario)

This video & trip to The Soo will always be special because it was our first trip to Northern Ontario. We decided to fly, rent a car and drive around to explore. Our first stop was for food at The Breakfast Pig followed by an unplanned & unexpected visit to Entomica, an insectarium. The Locks were a short walk away so had to see that in action and lastly because we had a rental car we drove even further north to see the Agawa Rock pictographs. We hope that this was the first of many trips to Northern Ontario for us. It's awesome and we hope you get to see it for yourselves someday. Comment Below to let us what you think.

June 30, 2012 -- The Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge has connected the twin cities of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan and Ontario, for 50 years. The occasion was marked with a bridge lighting ceremony and commemorative fireworks June 28, and a record-setting crowd participating in the 26th Annual Bridge Walk on June 30. 2003 Sault Sainte Marie is the name of two cities on the Saint Mary's River, which forms part of the boundary between the United States and Canada. The Sainte may also be abbreviated as Ste. Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario (population 74,566) is a Canadian city, Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan (population 16,542) is an American city. Formally founded in 1668 by Father Jacques Marquette as one city, then split into two in 1818 (when the Upper Peninsula was finally transferred from the British province of Upper Canada to the United States), Sault Ste. Marie has the distinction of being the oldest city in both the province of Ontario and the state of Michigan.
