A Day in Lively and Beautiful Zell am See, Austria - Part I
Zell am See is only a 30 minute Post Bus ride from Saalbach-Hinterglemm. The Bus stops right across from the Bahnhof (train station) and everything is within walking distance. Since the weather was supposed to be in the high 90s Fahrenheit, we decided to spend the day in this drop-dead beautiful town. Marine Steve spent a week in Zell am See in 1987; time to return and see what's been going on over the last 26 years.
It would take a magician to conjure up a more spectacular setting than Zell am See on the shore of turquoise Zeller Lake, or Lake Zell, surrounded by forested mountains and covered with Alpine pastures. People stand along the lake, snapping a gazillion photos, while saying, Have you ever seen anything more sublime? I must have repeated different versions of that line every few minutes as we walked the pedestrian path circling the lake.
Part II tomorrow will take you through Zell am See center...
The best of Salzburg and Hallstatt in winter
Travel video vlog about our trip to Salzburg and Hallstatt in winter 2018.
Day 1 - Arriving In Salzburg
It was mid January when we left Zurich in Switzerland to catch the OBB train across to Austria. We had booked the first class panoramic train which goes directly from Zurich to Innsbruck and then in Innsbruck would catch another train to our destination: Salzburg. Due to the heavy snow on that day, the panoramic train was cancelled in part of the journey and as a result we had to take one extra train and one bus to reach our destination. Instead of doing our normal planned route (Train: Zurich - Innsbruck - Salzburg), we were advised to take the train from Zurich station to a nearby station in Switzerland (about 1 hour away), then jump on a bus which would drive us for about 40 minutes to another train station, and from there we would then catch the Panoramic train to Innsbruck…
Upon arrival at Innsbruck station, we had missed our connecting train to Salzburg and we had to wait another hour to catch the next train heading that direction.
The total journey took us 7 hours and we arrived in Salzburg at around 4 pm that day.
Located in the border with Germany, Salzburg is an Austrian city with gorgeous views of the alps that is divided by the Sakzach river (on one side is the old city and on the other is the new city).
We stayed in Salzburg for three nights and from there we also did a day trip to Hallstatt.
On the day we arrived we headed straight to explore the old town. Despite the cold weather, there was no sign of snow anywhere in the city. However, as we woke up on the following morning, it had been snowing all night and the city was then completely covered in snow, just magical!
Day 2 - Exploring Salzburg in the snow
That morning we headed to the Museum der Moderne on the Monchsberg. We were not able to access the museum because it was closed that day, but we were able to access the museum’s rooftop which has amazing panoramic views of Salzburg’s old town. Totally worth the trip! The best part is that because it was snowing, we were the two people there. I guess that’s one of the positive things of travelling in winter :-)
Later that day, we also took the funicular to explore the Fortress Hohensalzburg, which also provides magnificent 360 views of the city, as you can see in the video. This is another place that if can’t miss if you are in Salzburg.
Day 3 - Exploring Hallstatt
We rented a car for our day trip to Hallstatt. We left early in the morning and we stopped to photograph some places along the way. The scenery in winter is just beautiful in that region, so I highly recommend doing that trip by car if you get a chance.
Hallstatt is a village on Lake Hallstatt's western shore in Austria's mountainous Salzkammergut region, filled with 16th-century Alpine houses, small alleyways and also many cosy cafes and shops. The village of Hallstatt is also protected by UNESCO and it is home to the oldest salt mine in the world.
Hallstatt is very small so it can easily be explored in a day. We only had about 5 hours there and we felt it was enough time to explore what the village had to offer. The skywalk, which is a route that leads you to a high point where you can see panoramic views of the village, was unfortunately closed when were there because of the snow, so we spent our time there strolling its small cobblestone streets and admiring breathtaking views of village and the mountains.

The Scots’ Church | Melbourne, Australia
[FILMED ON July 30, 2017] The Scots’ Church is a Presbyterian church in Melbourne located on Collins Street. Having a motto “In God We Trust”, The Scots’ Church has become a place of worship since 1835. It was designed by the architects from the leading firm in Melbourne at the time who also designed Melbourne Town Hall, Wesley Church, the State Library and Royal Exhibition Building. The Scots’ Church was constructed from Barrabool stone with dressings in New Zealand Kakanui stone and was the highest building in Melbourne at the time.
The interior houses an impressive artwork collection of stained glass windows including the Last Supper - the second largest window in the church, the Good Samaritan - the oldest aisle window and magnificent windows depicting eight episodes from the Gospels. Located above the lectern is the late Australian prime minister Sir Robert Menzies’ flag and the crest of the Order of the Thistle. Additionally, on the North Transept is the main organ of four keyboards and 68 speaking stops which was installed by Rieger Orgelbau, Schwarzach, Austria
