Northeast Greenland National Park (Greenlandic: Kalaallit Geography[edit] 109
The park shares borders, largely laid out as straight lines, with the Sermersooq municipality in the south and with the Qaasuitsup municipality in the west along the 45° West meridian on the ice cap in the west. The large interior of the park is part of the Greenland Ice Sheet, but there are also large ice-free areas along the coast and on Peary Land in the north. Besides Peary land, the park includes the King Frederick VIII Land and King Christian X Land geographical areas.
The area is subject to larger loss of ice than expected.[3]
History[edit]
Franz Josef Fjord
Originally created on 22 May 1974 from the northern, practically uninhabited part of the former Ittoqqortoormiit Municipality in Tunu (East Greenland), in 1988 the park was expanded by another 272,000 km2 (105,019.8 sq mi) to its present size, adding the northeastern part of the former county of Avannaa (North Greenland). In January 1977 it was designated an international biosphere reserve. The park is overseen by the Greenland Department of Environment and Nature. The historical research camps on the ice sheet−Eismitte and North Ice−fall within the boundaries of the present-day park.
Population[edit]
Zackenberg Station
The park has no permanent human population. In 1986, the permanent population of the park was 40, living at Mestersvig, although 400 sites saw occasional summertime use. These 40 were involved in cleanup and closeout operations at mining exploration sites and soon left. Since then censuses have recorded zero permanent human population. Recently only 31 people and about 110 dogs were present over winter in North East Greenland, distributed among the following stations (all on the coast, except Summit Camp):[4][5]
Daneborg (12) headquarters of the Sirius Patrol, the park policing agency
Danmarkshavn (8) civilian weather station
Station Nord (5) military base
Mestersvig (2) military outpost with 1,800 m gravel runway
Zackenberg (0) summer-only research station
Summit Camp (4) research station on the Greenland Ice Sheet
During summer scientists add to these numbers. The research station ZERO (Zackenberg Ecological Research Operations) 74°28′11″N 20°34′15″W can cater for over 20 scientists and station personnel.
Fauna[edit]
Iceberg in the national park
An estimated 5,000 to 15,000 musk oxen, as well as numerous polar bears and walrus, can be found near the coastal regions of the park. This is claimed to be 40% of the world population of musk ox.[6] Other mammals include Arctic fox, stoat, collared lemming and Arctic hare. Other marine mammals include ringed seal, bearded seal, harp seal and hooded seal as well as narwhal and Beluga whale.
Species of birds which breed in the park include great northern diver, barnacle goose, pink-footed goose, common eider, king eider, gyrfalcon, snowy owl, sanderling, ptarmigan and raven.

Nuuk Drone Flight: Nuuk is the capital and largest city of Greenland. It is the seat of government and the countrys largest cultural and economic centre. The major cities closest to the capital are Iqaluit and St. Johns in Canada and Reykjavík in Iceland. Nuuk contains almost a third of Greenlands population and its tallest building. Nuuk is also the seat of government for the Sermersooq municipality. In January 2019, it had a population of 17,984. The city was founded in 1728 by the Dano-Norwegian governor Claus Paarss when he relocated Hans Egedes earlier Hope Colony (Haabets Koloni) to the mainland, and was named Godthåb (Good Hope). The city officially adopted its current name in 1979, although the name Godthåb remained in use in Danish. Nuuk is the Kalaallisut word for cape (Danish: næs). It is so named because of its position at the end of the Nuup Kangerlua fjord on the eastern shore of the Labrador Sea. Its latitude, at 64°10 N, makes it the worlds northernmost capital, only a few kilometres farther north than the Icelandic capital Reykjavík. // Nuuk, Greenlands capital, is a small city on the countrys southwest coast. Its large fjord system is known for waterfalls, humpback whales and icebergs. The waterfront is dotted with brightly colored houses against the backdrop of Sermitsiaq mountain. Greenland National Museum has mummies and Inuit skin boats, while the Nuuk Art Museum displays local works. The Katuaq cultural center offers films, concerts and art. [wikipedia // Google]

Qeqertarsuatsiaat: Qeqertarsuatsiaat, formerly Fiskernæs or Fiskenæsset, is a settlement in the Sermersooq municipality in southwestern Greenland, located on an island off the shores of Labrador Sea. Its population was 235 in 2010. Kikertarsocitsiak or Qeqertarsuatsiaat has long been the local name for the island (Kalaallisut: Rather Large Islands). It was first settled by the Danes as Fiskernæs in 1754. The name was often anglicized as Fishers Inlet. The trading post was founded by the merchant Anders Olsen on behalf of the Danish General Trade Company, which was granted a royal monopoly on trade in Greenland but only in and around its settlements. Like most Greenlandic trading posts, it was a location for the Danes to trade imported goods for seal skins and seal and whale blubber gathered by Kalaallit in the area. Unusually, the settlement became the early center of Greenlands salmon and cod fisheries and it was as common to see the large womans boat or umiak as the smaller hunting kayaks. [wikipedia]
