Get Lost in Setouchi, Japan: Travel Guide
Series Overview: Though Japan may be a small country, there is so much history, art, adventure, luxury and culinary experiences in each one of its regions! I am so glad that I spent 2 weeks exploring the Setouchi Region. We were able to marvel at the beauty of the Seto Inland Sea from seaplanes and catamarans and as we crossed impressive bridges to the many islands. The islands themselves were home to so much culture and traditional craft, not to mention breathtaking mountains, rivers, valleys and gorges.
Don't miss Hiroshima's A Bomb dome or an onsen--my favorite was in Arima! Stop in Kobe to try out the best beef of your life, and while there, check out the sake breweries in Nada to learn more about this national drink. Miyajima Island is another highlight with its torii gate and Itsukushima shrine, as well as its friendly deer!
And of course, staying at ryokan, especially one in Kurashiki, or a kominka in the Iya Valley, will leave you with incredible photos and memories.
There's so much more to see and say about this region, but I'll let you watch this series overview as I think that explains it the best!
SETOUCHI ISLAND HOPPING - SETOUCHI, JAPAN
The Setouchi region, the “Aegean Sea of the Orient”, is located in the west of the Japanese archipelago. Here we introduce to you the Setouchi region, where you can enjoy gourmet food, cycling, contemporary art, and much more, all against a backdrop of beautiful island vistas.
Central Route: Setouchi, Japan
Japan's Central Route through the Setouchi Region has so many highlights, I could have spent weeks touring JUST there! From the mountainous Iya Valley, to the glacial waters and boat ride on the Oboke Gorge, to handmade soba with locals and a breathtaking overnight stay at a traditional Kominka on a mountaintop, these were some of my favorite memories of the whole trip! Don't miss the somewhat scary (but also very fun) walk across the Kazura Bridge! And if you like Udon, stop by the Nakano Udon school to learn how to make it yourself!
When taking this route, don't forget to swing by the Naruto Whirlpools to admire this natural water phenomenon up close and while you are there, stop by the Ostuka Museum.
Take home a beautiful local craft--a scarf or blanket dyed in the traditional Japanese aizome indigo method!
