Otter Falls, Seven Devils, NC
A short video from a quick warmup hike on June 9 to Otter Falls in Seven Devils, NC. The trail system opened in 2015 and provides access to this waterfall on Valley Creek. The trails combined are less than 1.5 miles, I did every trail except a tiny portion of the orange loop. Otter Falls was flowing well and was nicer than expected. I estimate it is around 20 feet high. Hike was around 1.2 miles in 35 minutes. I think the elevation gain is exaggerated on my track, the GPS probably bounced a lot in this shaded valley.

Hanging Rock, Bear Paw State Natural Area, NC
After a quick hike to Otter Falls we drove up towards the top of Seven Devils and parked at a water tower to begin our bushwhack to Hanging Rock on June 9. The beginning was steep, climbing up and over two knobs on Hanging Rock Ridge before we connected with a faint boundary path from Brown Trout Rd. This boundary line is unreliable, and when we could follow the path it was mostly overgrown with thorns and stinging nettle. It was a bad day to wear shorts.
As we got closer to Hanging Rock the path disappeared for long stretches, especially at rocky knobs where we would abruptly come to a 10-foot cliff and have to backtrack and loop around. In general, it was easier to go around these knobs at the height of the ridge. Just before the summit we connected with the trail from the resort below, and made our way to the top. Hanging Rock (5,220 feet) is not nearly as high as the surrounding mountains, but this barren rock peak ranks among the top summits in the area. We were up close and personal with Grandfather Mountain across the Watauga River headwaters. Sugar Mountain was due southwest, with the Black Mountains in the distance. The Roan Highlands were WSW across the Elk River and North Toe River headwaters. Beech Mountain rises impressively due west. To the north in the distance were the Amphibolite Mountains. Unfortunately the heavy cloud cover was ruining most of my long distance zoom shots. After about 30 minutes at the summit we turned around and went through stinging nettle hell all over again.
Hike/bushwhack was 3.0 miles with 1,352 feet elevation gain in 2 hours and 45 minutes.

If you have absolutely nothing better to do, then listen to us dramatically complain for 9 minutes about a hike that we actually had a lot of fun on. Leave it to us to annoyingly whine about one of the most wondrous and beautiful places on earth: the Blue Ridge Parkway in my home state, North Carolina. Enjoy!

Paranormal events are phenomena described in popular culture, folklore and other non-scientific bodies of knowledge, whose existence within these contexts is described to lie beyond normal experience or scientific explanation.

In traditional belief and fiction, a ghost is a manifestation of the spirit or soul of a person. Alternative theories expand on that idea and include belief in the ghosts of deceased animals. Sometimes the term ghost is used synonymously with any spirit or demon, however in popular usage the term typically refers to a deceased person's spirit.
The belief in ghosts as souls of the departed is closely tied to the concept of animism, an ancient belief which attributed souls to everything in nature. As the 19th-century anthropologist George Frazer explained in his classic work, The Golden Bough, souls were seen as the creature within that animated the body. Although the human soul was sometimes symbolically or literally depicted in ancient cultures as a bird or other animal, it was widely held that the soul was an exact reproduction of the body in every feature, even down to clothing the person wore. This is depicted in artwork from various ancient cultures, including such works as the Egyptian Book of the Dead, which shows deceased people in the afterlife appearing much as they did before death, including the style of dress.
Although the evidence for ghosts is largely anecdotal, the belief in ghosts throughout history has remained widespread and persistent.

Tallulah Gorge, the most spectacular canyon in the eastern U.S.!
Visitors can hike the rim trails to several overlooks and see one of the most spectacular canyons in the eastern U.S. and where the movie Deliverance starring Burt Reynolds was filmed in 1972. Tallulah Gorge is two miles long and nearly 1,000 feet deep.floor.A suspension bridge sways 80 feet above the rocky bottom, providing spectacular views of the river and waterfalls.
At the dawn of the 20th Century, Tallulah Falls was a bustling resort town that rivaled Niagra Falls and people came from all over to see the waterfalls and the awesome gorge. Overlooking Tallulah Gorge, an ancient, awesome 1000-foot chasm carved over millions of years by the Tallulah River is Tallulah Gorge State Park with an impressive Interpretive Center, gorge overlooks, hiking and biking trails and a suspension bridge. Tallulah Falls is actually a series of six waterfalls cascading down through Tallulah Gorge. Tallulah Station offers local artworks as well as warm cups of specialty coffees and sweets including ice cream. Numerous hiking trails are close by, including the Shortline Trail, a 3-mile paved trail following the Old Tallulah Falls Railroad Bed. Lake Tugalo and Lake Yonah both offer fishing, swimming and non-motorized boating.
Exhibits in the park’s Jane Hurt Yarn Interpretive Center highlight the rich history of this Victorian resort town, as well as the rugged terrain and fragile ecosystem of the area. The persistent trillium, monkey-face orchid and green salamander are protected species found within the gorge. An award-winning film takes viewers on a dramatic journey through the gorge, including footage of rock climbers and kayakers. A gift shop offers snacks, jewelry, toys, books, walking sticks, clothing and more.
