Go. It's amazing. Fabulous. One the most magical places in the entire world. The budget minded can take the bus from Maun to Sepopa. There is now a river taxi that travels daily from Sepopa to Seronga and coordinates with the buses. If your timing is off stay at Swamp Stop overnight. In Seronga you can stay at the Polers Trust and enjoy the mekoro trips.
Much of the area is divided into large concessions run by various safari groups. Development is strictly regulated so that there is little development and lots of wildlife. It is expensive, but worth it to stay in some of these permanent tented campsites. The guides are knowledgeable, and the accommodations very comfortable. Wilderness Safaris runs many great camps. They are all inclusive: two wildlife rides a day, all meals, snacks and drinks are included in the price.
The University of Botswana's Harry Oppenheimer Okavango Research Centre HOORC was established in 1994 in response to the need to understand the natural and human processes that shape the Delta, which became a Ramsar Wetland of International Significance in December 1996. HOORC's multidisciplinary research teams provide the science to support the work of local, national and regional planning bodies such as Botswana's Okavango Delta Management Plan and OKACOM the Okavango River Basin Water Commmission. This delta in north-west Botswana comprises permanent marshlands and seasonally flooded plains. It is one of the very few major interior delta systems that do not flow into a sea or ocean, with a wetland system that is almost intact. One of the unique characteristics of the site is that the annual flooding from the River Okavango occurs during the dry season, with the result that the native plants and animals have synchronized their biological cycles with these seasonal rains and floods. It is an exceptional example of the interaction between climatic, hydrological and biological processes. The Okavango Delta is home to some of the world’s most endangered species of large mammal, such as the cheetah, white rhinoceros, black rhinoceros, African wild dog and lion.

The Okavango Delta is generally considered safe for travelers, although as with any part of Africa necessary precautions should always be taken. The Okavango is home to many potentially dangerous animals (including, but not limited to, the Nile Crocodile, Lion and Hippo) but attacks on tourists are virtually unheard of, it is best to closely follow the instructions of your guide at all times.

1 - Kalahari Basin
The Kalahari Desert lies in the Kalahari Basin, which is enormous, about five times the size of France, and the Basin covers all of Botswana and parts of her surrounding countries. The Kalahari Basin was created 135 million years ago when South America, Asia and Australia tore themselves away from Africa. The power of this event and of the secondary volcanic and earth shuddering activity it caused lifted the edges of southern Africa like a bowl, creating the Basin. Over many millions of years this part of the world passed through extremely dry periods, during which fierce sand storms dumped layer upon layer of sand into the basin. And today, 65 million years later, this is the oldest and largest stretch of sand on our planet.
2 - Kalahari Desert
The Kalahari is currently in the wet period of its 65 million year history. It's most outstanding physical feature is the living desert. The sands of the Kalahari Desert have mostly been blown there rather than transported by water and thus are not very fertile. Even so, after good rains, grass is plentiful and this supports an astounding diversity of life. The Kalahari Desert is the last refuge of the San or Bushmen, who have roamed Southern Africa for the last 30 000 years and are now on the verge of extinction. 3 - Lake Makgadikgadi
At some stage in this 65 million year period large Rivers flowed into the Kalahari Basin, creating a giant lake which in turn emptied into the Indian Ocean via the Limpopo River. And then about 50 000 years ago, due to the numerous fault lines in the area, all but the Okavango River were diverted, and the Lake began to shrink. Until about 10 000 years ago another fault effectively dammed the Okavango River creating the delta and leaving the Lake to become the largest the salt pan complex in the world, the Makgadikgadi Pans – an amazing expanse of whiteness the size Switzerland.

Botswana has one of the oldest cultures on Earth: the Bushman. Botswana Bushmen are still practicing hunter-gatherers since early times; they are the indigenous population of South Africa. A visit to the safari has to include interaction with the indigenous: the San people to see how the cave dwellers might have lived. The Basarwa has rock art scattered around South Africa and adventurers can experience life as a forgoer.

The Okavango Delta is home to wildlife native to Kalahari Dessert, based in the centre of the dessert, the Okavango River allows a canoe to be paddled through for the adventurer to witness the diversity of life of South Africa. The Okavango Delta is an oasis where the river empties into the swamp rather than the sea. Every rainy season the delta swells upto three times it original size to support all live that depends on it. There are three more wild life parks and seven more game reserves in Botswana.

Botswana's government owns one of the largest diamond mining companies in the world. De Beers company had joined with the Botswanian government to operate Debswana, the company that owns all of Botswana's diamond mines. Botswana's main economy is fueled mainly by diamonds and other ores, with tourism and argiculture trailing close behind. Due to fears that diamonds will dry out in Botswana in the future, the government is trying to shift the economy to tourism, agriculture and trade.

Going to Botswana during the low season is cheaper, but offers more than during viewing season. From July to October, Botswana's hotel and tours are quickly booked up and hence becomes more expensive due to demand. Other ideal times depend on the adventurer's goal, from November to March birds fly home for breeding and from December to May flowers will bloom after the rain. Botswana is a country that is suitable for visit all year round.

The Okavango River is a river in southwest Africa. It is the fourth-longest river system in southern Africa, running southeastward for 1,600 km (990 mi). It begins in Angola, where it is known as the Cubango River. Further south it forms part of the border between Angola and Namibia, and then flows into Botswana, draining into the Moremi Game Reserve.
Before it enters Botswana, the river drops four meters, across the full 1.2 km-width of the river, in a series of rapids known as Popa Falls, visible when the river is low, as during the dry season.
Discharging to an endorheic basin, the Okavango does not have an outlet to the sea. Instead, it empties into a swamp in the Kalahari Desert, known as the Okavango Delta or Okavango Alluvial Fan. In the rainy season there is an outflow to the Boteti River which in turn seasonally discharges to the Makgadikgadi Pans, which features an expansive area of rainy season wetland where tens of thousands of flamingos congregate each summer.Part of the river's flow fills Lake Ngami. Noted for its wildlife, the Okavango area contains Botswana's Moremi Game Reserve.
The Okavango Delta (or Okavango Swamp), in Botswana, is a large inland delta, formed where the Okavango River reaches a tectonic trough in the central part of the endorheic basin of the Kalahari. All the water reaching the Delta is ultimately evaporated and transpired, and does not flow into any sea or ocean. Each year approximately 11 cubic kilometres of water spread over the 6,000-15,000 km² area. Some flood-waters drain into Lake Ngami. The Moremi Game Reserve, a National Park, spreads across the eastern side of the Delta.
The area was once part of Lake Makgadikgadi, an ancient lake that mostly dried up by the early Holocene. Although the Okavango Delta is widely believed to be the world largest inland delta, it is, in fact not. In Africa alone there are two larger similar geological features - the Sudd on the Nile in South Sudan, and the Inner Niger Delta in Mali.
FloodsThe Okavango is produced by seasonal flooding. The Okavango River drains the summer (January--February) rainfall from the Angola highlands and the surge flows 1,200 kilometres in approximately one month. The waters then spread over the 250 km by 150 km area of the delta over the next four months (March--June). The high temperature of the delta causes rapid transpiration and evaporation, resulting in a cycle of rising and falling water level that was not fully understood until the early 20th century. The flood peaks between June and August, during Botswana's dry winter months, when the delta swells to three times its permanent size, attracting animals from kilometres around and creating one of Africa's greatest concentrations of wildlife.
The delta is very flat, with less than 2 metres variation in height across its 15,000 km².
Where the water goes
Every year, circa 11 cubic kilometres (11,000,000,000,000 litres) of water flow into the delta. Approximately 60% is consumed through transpiration by plants, 36% by evaporation, 2% percolates into the aquifer system; and 2% flows into Lake Ngami. This turgid outflow means that the delta is unable to flush out the minerals carried by the river and is liable to become increasingly salty and uninhabitable, but this effect is reduced by the low salt content which collects around the roots of the plants. The low salinity of the water also means that the floods do not greatly enrich the floodplain with nutrients.

Track to Gcwihaba Caves (Drotsky's Caves) - Botswana
This is part of the track from Tsumkwe, Namibia to the tar road in Botswana via Dobe Gate. The ruts look nice and smooth because the sand is deep and fills in the last track. This particular section was east of Drotsky's caves and required a lot of horsing the wheel and staying in first gear for about 20 minutes. This section crosses two or three ancient sand dunes. Once in the valleys between dunes, the track is better, but is still challenging. Sore shoulders after several days of driving this kind of bush track.
