As of the 2018 Mexican Grand Prix, 995 World Championship Grands Prix have been held, including the Indianapolis 500 races which were a part of the World Championships from 1950 until 1960. Major auto racing events are often named Grands Prix , a tradition dating back to the first decade of the 20th Century and the Grand Prix motor racing of the 1920s and 1930s. As of 2018, World Championship Grands Prix must have a scheduled race distance of at least 305 km , with the exception of the Monaco Grand Prix , and no race can run for more than 2 hours.

Born in Kwangchou and raised in Hong Kong and Shanghai, Pei drew inspiration at an early age from the gardens at Soochow. In 1935, he moved to the United States and enrolled in the University of Pennsylvania's architecture school, but quickly transferred to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
