Osborne House is a former royal residence in East Cowes, Isle of Wight, United Kingdom. The house was built between 1845 and 1851 for Queen Victoria and Prince Albert as a summer home and rural retreat. Prince Albert designed the house himself in the style of an Italian Renaissance palazzo. The builder was Thomas Cubitt, the London architect and builder whose company built the main façade of Buckingham Palace for the royal couple in 1847. An earlier smaller house on the site was demolished to make way for a new and far larger house, though the original entrance portico survives as the main gateway to the walled garden. The Needles is a row of three distinctive stacks of chalk that rise about 30m out of the sea off the western extremity of the Isle of Wight, United Kingdom, close to Alum Bay, and part of Totland, the westernmost Civil Parish of the Isle of Wight. The Needles Lighthouse stands at the outer, western end of the formation. Built in 1859, it has been automated since 1994. The waters and adjoining seabed form part of the Needles Marine Conservation Zone and the Needles along with the shore and heath above are part of the Headon Warren and West High Down Site of Special Scientific Interest.The formation takes its name from a fourth needle-shaped pillar called Lot's Wife, that collapsed in a storm in 1764. Mottistone on the Isle of Wight

A lovely summers day in early June and the flowers were looking at their best. A 15 minute walk to the Longstone, a neolithic communal burial place, kept us amused as we waited for the formal gardens to be opened at 11 am. The shack was an interesting place to look round situated in the refreshment area. It was built in the 1930's and had all mod cons, including 2 bunk beds, a shower and toilet, not to mention a cooker, typewriter, radio, and even a telephone - very interesting. Well worth a visit...

Chevin country lodge and spa

The drive round the site towards what was our lodge (#70) in November 2012. Nice place and fantastic value for the midweek spa package! Ask for a lodge- not in the hotel itself!
