Sinnamary is a town and commune on the coast of French Guiana, between Kourou and Iracoubo. Sinnamary was the second French settlement to be founded in French Guiana: the town was founded in 1664. It lies on the Sinnamary River. The town contains an Indonesian community, as well as a Galibi Amerindian community. Both communities produce artwork and jewellery that can be purchased. The main hotel in Sinnamary is the Hôtel du Fleuve. The Guianan Soyuz launch site is situated within the territory of the Sinnamary commune. The penal colony of Cayenne , commonly known as Devil's Island , was a French penal colony that operated in the 19th and 20th century in the Salvation's Islands of French Guiana. Opened in 1852, the Devil's Island system received convicts deported from all parts of the Second French Empire, and was infamous for its harsh treatment of detainees, with a death rate of 75% at their worst, until it was closed down in 1953. Devil's Island was notorious for being used for the internal exile of French political prisoners, with the most famous being Captain Alfred Dreyfus.

The Guiana Space Centre or, more commonly, Centre Spatial Guyanais is a French and European spaceport to the northwest of Kourou in French Guiana, France. Operational since 1968, it is particularly suitable as a location for a spaceport as it fulfills the two major geographical requirements of such a site: it is near the equator, so that less energy is required to maneuver a spacecraft into an equatorial, geostationary orbit, and it has open sea to the east, so that lower stages of rockets and debris from launch failures are unlikely to fall on human habitations. This was my lovely close-and-personal encounter with this bird... more than 10 minutes posing for me, scanning the forest around and sharing a piece of the wet Choco forest where it lives ;-)

Video made during our recent short one-week trip with our friends Carla Dove & Chris Milensky from the Smithsonian Institution from Washington DC. Carla was invited by us and some others ( ) to give a talk about her research on bird and airplane strikes all over teh world.. amazing lecture she gave! ( you can see it here on video: youtube.com/playlist?list=PLEE0C2F31B560A30E ) so we toook advantage and went birding to the amazing Choco forests in the W Andes, the dry areas of Cauca Valley and the cloud-forests of N C Andes... GRAND TRIP with a bit over 300 species and we were not rushing around!.. spent good time and enjoyed at each place. Tody Motmot we got in this tour seems to be a neat new site for it and a bit of an expected range extension.
