The Göta Canal is a Swedish canal constructed in the early 19th century. It formed the backbone of a waterway stretching some 614 km , linking a number of lakes and rivers to provide a route from Gothenburg on the west coast to Söderköping on the Baltic Sea via the river Göta älv and the Trollhätte kanal, through the large lakes Vänern and Vättern. The canal itself is 190 km long, of which 87 km were dug or blasted, with a width varying between 7–14 m and a maximum depth of about 3 m . It has 58 locks and can accommodate vessels up to 32 m long, 7 m wide and 2.8 m in draft. Göta Canal is a sister canal of Caledonian Canal in Scotland, which was also constructed by Thomas Telford.

Läckö Castle is a medieval castle in Sweden, located on Kållandsö island on Lake Vanern, 25 kilometers north of Lidköping in Västergötland. Brynolf Algotsson, Bishop of Skara, laid the foundations for a fortified castle in 1298 originally as a fort that consisted of two or three houses surrounded by a wall. After a fire during the 1470s, the fort was expanded by bishop Brynolf Gerlachsson. After the reformation in 1527, King Gustav Vasa took possession. Field Marshal Jacob Pontusson De la Gardie was granted the property in 1615. Field Marshal de la Gardie embarked on an extensive building spree, including the third floor of the keep. Gothenburg is Sweden’s second largest seaport and is located on the west coast and is the country’s military and economic Gateway To The World whose rapid prosperity came when the city’s merchants created their own East India Company in true Dutch style. We are going on a journey on the Göta Canal that travels from Gothenburg to Stockholm and is Sweden’s construction of the millennium, connecting the North Sea with the Baltic Sea. After crossing Lake Vättern we reach Borenshult, an important section of the canal with five lock chambers and a height of almost sixteen metres to overcome. This lock brings the history of the Göta Canal back to life, deep down below Lake Boren, and the joining together of the great lakes, Vänern and Vättern. We arrive at Heda where fifteen lock chambers follow and where we are able to disembark and walk along the canal among the wonderful natural landscape. Next the most spectacular section of the entire canal awaits us, the Carl Johann Lock, near to the small town of Berg with seven interconnecting locks that lead downwards, one after the other to Lake Roxen. Finally, Stockholm, the ‘Venice Of The North’. The Göta Kanal is a unique project that originally had a military purpose but which eventually was vital for Sweden’s trade and industry. A cultural heritage that ranks as one of the most famous engineering projects in the world.

This was the second honeymoon for Hansen and the first time the bride traveled along.The Göta Canal stretches between Sjötorp on Lake Vänern and Mem at the Baltic, with 58 locks along the way. The total length of the canal is 190 km, of which 87 km are man-made. The canal's highest point, 91.8 m above sea level, is Lake Viken.
