1. Orpheus Monument Ptuj
The Orpheus Monument is a Roman monument in Ptuj, Slovenia, an almost 5 metres high and about 1.8 metres wide stele, carved of white Pohorje marble. It is located at Slovene Square , the town's central square, in front of the Town Tower. It is the oldest public monument preserved in its original location in Slovenia, the largest discovered monument from the Roman province of the Pannonia Superior, and the symbol of Ptuj.The monolith was originally a grave marker, erected in the 2nd century AD to honor the memory of Marcus Valerius Verus, the duumvir of Roman Poetovio. In the Middle Ages, it was used as a pillory. Criminals were tied to the iron rings attached to its lower part. The Plague Column is a monument at Main Square of the city of Maribor, northeastern Slovenia, erected by pious burghers in gratitude for the end of a 1680 plague epidemic that had claimed a third of the city's population. The original monument was built in 1681. The current one is a 1743 replacement, the first work by the German sculptor Joseph Straub in Maribor. It is considered his most monumental work, and one of the best examples of baroque art in Slovenia. Vodnik Square is a town square in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. It spans the area from the Dragon Bridge across Pogačar Square to the Triple Bridge. It is named after Valentin Vodnik, a Slovene priest, journalist, and poet from the late Enlightenment period. There is a monument with a statue in the square commemorating him. It was sculpted by Alojzij Gangl and unveiled in 1889. Across the street from the monument is a path leading to Castle Hill.In 1895, when an earthquake destroyed much of an old monastery containing a girl's diocesan college and library, it had to be completely pulled down and the square became an outdoor market now called the Ljubljana Central Market.

7 Days in Slovenia

Welcome to Slovenia. This small country (the size of New Jersey) sits between Italy, Austria, and Croatia, and as you’ll see, is one of Europe’s raddest places to travel. We gave ourselves a week. Starting off in Lake Bled, we swam in one of the most postcard looking lakes you’ve ever seen before heading off to sail in the Adriatic. From here we explored the Soča Valley — a region with turquoise blue rivers and limitless adventure options. Farm to table food and family-run wineries are a way of life in Slovenia, and we were stoked to spend time with world famous chef Ana RoŠ from HiŠa Franko restaurant as well as Aleš Kristančič, the storied winemaker of Movia vineyards. Don’t overlook this country when thinking of your next travels to Europe.
