It was formed by glacial melting at the end of the Ice Age. Major towns on the lakeshore include Lappeenranta, Imatra, Savonlinna, Mikkeli, Varkaus, and Joensuu. The Vuoksi River flows from Saimaa to Lake Ladoga. Most of the lake is spotted with islands, and narrow canals divide the lake in many parts, each having their own names . Thus, Saimaa exhibits all major types of lake in Finland at different levels of eutropification.     Imatrankoski is a rapid on the Vuoksi River in Imatra, Finland. It has been a famous tourist attraction since the late 1700s. Imatrankoski is also one of the National landscapes of Finland. Since 1929 the rapid has been blocked by a dam as the Imatra hydroelectric plant began operation. Today, the dam is opened daily between June and August, as well as on Christmas Day and New Year's Eve. Unfortunately, due to the construction works at the Imatra hydroelectric powerplant, there will be no rapid shows in 2017.

The modernist concrete design was created by architect Toivo Korhonen and architect student Jaakko Laapotti.     Kummakivi is a large balancing rock in Ruokolahti, Finland. The 7-metre long boulder lies on a convex bedrock surface with a very small footprint but so firmly that it cannot be rocked with human force. Kummakivi has been protected since 1962. A pine tree originating from the 1980s grows on top of the boulder. The boulder is located in a forest in the western part of the Ruokolahti municipality, near the border of Puumala.
