The Wachau is an Austrian valley with a picturesque landscape formed by the Danube river.
It is one of the most prominent tourist destinations of Lower Austria, located midway between the towns of Melk and Krems
that also attracts connoisseurs and epicureans for its high-quality wines.
It is 40 kilometres in length and was already settled in prehistoric times.
A well-known place and tourist attraction is Dürnstein, where King Richard the Lion-Heart of England was held captive by Duke Leopold V.
The architectural elegance of its ancient monasteries, castles and ruins combined with the urban architecture of its towns and villages, and the cultivation of vines as an important agricultural produce are the dominant features of the valley.
The Wachau was inscribed as Wachau Cultural Landscape in the UNESCO List of World Heritage Sites in recognition of its architectural and agricultural history, in December 2000.
In the Wachau, the town of Spitz lies on the Danube's western bank and the city of Melk on its eastern bank.
Other important towns in the valley are Dürnstein, Weißenkirchen in der Wachau and Emmersdorf an der Donau,
which have a galaxy of old homestead buildings dating from the mid-6th century.
The railway line built in 1909 between Krems and Emmersdorf is a topographical marvel.
The Danube River has a good network consisting of an inland navigation system.
The Wachau valley historic sights can be visited by steamer boats; the best season to visit is between May and September.
Autobahn services are also available from Vienna to visit all the important places in the Wachau.
The well-developed road network between Melk and Krems follows the contour of the valley.
However, there are no bridges across the Danube River in this region, and ferries are the only way to cross the river.
The origin of the wine growing tradition in Austria, and in particular in the Wachau valley, and its popularity beyond its borders, is attributed to medieval period of the Roman settlements.
The Vinea Wachau Nobilis Districts date to Leuthold I von Kuenring (1243–1313).
Wine production peaked under the Carolingians.
Krems has a long history as the hub of the Wachau wine trade, while the town of Dürnstein is also known for being one of the Wachau wine centres.

Wachau Cruise (Austria) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Wachau Cruise in Austria.
A cruise through the Wachau is one of the most beautiful experiences on the Danube, thirty six kilometres along Austria’s romantic Danube Valley. A journey to mediaeval castles and towns, plus religious Baroque art and idyllic nature. Our cruise through the Wachau begins in Stein, one of Austria‘s oldest cultural landscapes. Sacred monuments recall the triumph of Catholicism over Protestantism and more than a hundred buildings provide an authentic picture of the old town. Krems resembles a mediaeval city. The wrought iron signs of middleclass dwellings of varous building epochs still shine out today in century-old splendour with the narrow streets of the old town and Italian-looking city palaces whose well-preserved sgraffiti and stucco work recalls the prosperity of yesteryear. Dürnstein is a place with a long history and unique appearance. A small, mediaeval town of both legend and world renown and with a remarkable Augustinian Canon Monastery whose Baroque architecture was created by Jacob Prandtauer. The market town of Spitz is situated in the heart of the Wachau and is connected to the Danube steam navigation system that, from1829, made the river more accessible. A sixteenth century parish church is located within the town’s fine market square, flanked by the fine old buildings of the local vine growers. The view over the village of Melk is overwhelming. A spiral staircase leads down into Melk’s monastery church whose sumptuous interior architecture is unique. The Wachau is a total experience, a wonderful melting pot of culture, nature and history.

Wachau Valley (Austria) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Wachau Valley in Austria.
The Wachau is the most famous stretch of the Danube in Austria, thirty six kilometres of romantic Danube Valley. Today’s townscape of Krems brings back bygone days and a particularly beautifully-preserved street complex. More than a hundred buildings provide an authentic picture of the Old Town. Today, the buildings’ façades and entrances are decorated in the traditional way and show off the town’s splendid Renaissance and mediaeval buildings. Sacred monuments recall the victory of Catholicism over Protestantism following two centuries of hostilities. Up the Danube to Dürnstein, a place with a long history and unique appearance. Arrival by boat is particularly scenic and a jetty leads to a wall from where a gate and steps provide access to the Old Town. The small mediaeval town clings picturesquely to the cliffs above the Danube, guarded by castle ruins and fortified walls. In Roman times, vines were cultivated in this picturesque area due to the region’s ideal growing conditions and Weissenkirchen has always been a wine-growing centre. The steep river valley and its terraced vine gardens enjoy a temperate climate. The small village has a long and dramatic history and its old houses and lanes are indelibly evocative of the past. Spitz is picturesquely embedded within its surrounding vineyards, and the legendary Thousand Bucket Mountain is an imposing sight. It was not only due to wine but also the trading of both wood and salt that Spitz attained an important position in the Middle Ages and at the beginning of modern times. Since the year 2000, the Wachau has been a World Cultural Region, a gem on the long route of the Danube, a picturesque river valley where both mediaeval and Baroque create an exceptional atmosphere, and nature, the perfect setting.

Wachau in HD (Austria) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Wachau in Austria.
As with almost anywhere within the Wachau, the clocks of the dreamy town of Stein seem to run a little slower than in other parts of Austria. Its well preserved ensemble of old houses is not uncommon and the Wachau region enjoys a good reputation for its fine historic treasures and elegant buildings.Krems is like a fairytale town. The wrought iron signs on its buildings and its wonderful historic atmosphere are truly captivating. The former stronghold and subsequent rival of Vienna contains several beautiful lanes and imposing buildings that reflect the wealth of its former citizens. Amid the vast terraces of the Wachau vineyards is the village of Weissenkirchen in which several hospitable inns provide their customers with an ideal opportunity to sample the wines of this region. Winegrowing has a long tradition in this section of the Danube and the area between Krems and Melk is one of the oldest cultivated landscapes in Austria. The Wachau is a landscape full of warmth as well as being steeped in history and age old traditions.

walking in Melk, Austria from the Abbey through the old town
This shows us walking the main drag of the old town center of the town of Melk, Austria from the famous abbey through the town center out to a bike path. The date is Saturday, July 8, 2017. Very pleasant walk and pretty buildings. Very European in feel.
Beautiful Places That Look More Magical Covered in Snow
Chicago, Illinois.
The Windy City is no stranger to snow, and a frosty coat of ice and snow makes Millennium Park (known for its modern art installations) seem completely unreal.
Neushwanstein, Germany.
King Ludwig’s Castle may be a nineteenth century architectural marvel, but in the wintertime it could just as easily pass as Elsa’s ice castle from Frozen.
Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
Wake Forest University makes for the perfect winter postcard with white trees framing its iconic chapel.
Flakstad, Norway.
A white coat of snow on the ground is the perfect canvas from which to admire the dazzling Northern Lights in this Norwegian town.
Prague, Czech Republic.
This European capital may be known for its assortment of eye-catching architecture (from Gothic churches to its old town square) but every building looks even more quaint surrounded by flurries.
Vineyards In Spitz, Austria
Situated along the Danube River, this town in the Austrian wine country is a charming market village that looks like something out of a picture book.
Tromso, Norway.
Known as the capital of the Arctic, this lively city is filled with vivid wooden houses that are hundreds of years old. At night, the Aurora Borealis adds even more color to this snowy locale.
Grand Canyon, Arizona.
Yep, even this southwest natural wonder gets blanketed in white — and visitors can experience the striking scenes with far fewer crowds than in the warmer months.
Godafoss, Iceland
Iceland’s incredible waterfall isn’t surrounded by snow year-round, but winter snow drifts make its blue waters look otherworldly.
Areches-Beaufort, France.
This French mountain village resort is the perfect place for skiing, eating fancy French cheeses, and cuddling in a cottage during the wintertime.
Swedish Coast.
Along the Baltic Sea, the Swedish coast gives off a rustic charm that seems even more idyllic with a fresh sprinkling of snow.
Shirakawa-Go, Japan.
Nestled in the Shogawa River Valley, this remote Japanese village was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its gassho-zukuri farmhouses, which are over 250 years old. Bonus: You can even stay in one overnight — just make sure to book early.
Ingleborough, United Kingdom.
This English mountain seems like something out of a science fiction film when its rocky exterior is covered with pure white snow.
Park City, Utah.
Park City’s Old Town offers plenty of shopping, eating, and art galleries for visitors, and its picturesque multicolored buildings offer a nostalgi vibe.
Paris, France.
The city of love and romance seems even more seductive with a dusting of snow. Cold weather is better for snuggling, anyway.
Kakslauttanen, Finland.
Ever dream of staying in an igloo? At this Finnish resort, glass igloos make it possible to stay cozy while also marveling at the breathtaking natural surroundings.
Yosemite, California.
This national park may be a wonder in any season, but its majestic wilderness looks even more breathtaking after a snowfall.
Toronto, Canada.
The capital of Ontario has its fair share of breathtaking parks that become magically white landscapes after a blizzard.
Cape Elizabeth, Maine.
Portland’s Head Light stands at the entry to Portland Harbor, making it a landmark in any season. This is one very historic lighthouse — construction began in 1787 at the directive of George Washington.
Kyoto, Japan.
Home to plenty of Shinto shrines, over 1,000 Buddhist temples, and iconic wooden buildings, this quiet Japanese city seems to settle into a calming slumber under a sheet of snow.
Jämtland, Sweden.
This historic province along the border between Sweden and Norway is filled with spruce forests that are home to plenty of wildlife, including brown bears, wolves, and foxes.
Prince Edward Island, Canada.
This Canadian province may be beloved for its beaches in the summertime, but once winter hits, its colorful fishing towns settle down for a calm winter season.
Central Park, New York
Away from the hustle and bustle of the Macy’s holiday windows, Manhattan’s famed Central Park becomes a winter wonderland under a thick coat of powdery snow.
Les Trois-Moutiers, France
Particularly, the castle Château de la Mothe-Chandeniers (we spotted it on Instagram!), which was abandoned in 1932 after a fire. Today, it looks like a chateau fit for an ice princess during the dead of winter.
