Pleven, modern and pretty Military City
Pleven is a modern and pretty Military City in north central Bulgaria. It is home to modern shopping centres, a modern bus network and also a huge museum housed in the old miltary barracks. The centre has a large pedestrianised zone consisting of park space and a shopping street.

In this episode David takes us around Burgas, one of Bulgaria’s most beautiful cities on the Black Sea coast to give us a brief intro about what to see and where to eat in Burgas.
Burgas is a small city, easily seen on foot. Whether you crave the beach or shopping, there really is something in Burgas for everyone. You should start your adventure in Burgas as David did - in the beautiful seaside park. Here, David shows us some of the sculptures and monuments you’ll come across in the sculpture garden.
The seaside park is also a great place for walking, bicycle riding, and picnics. The sea breeze makes the area quite pleasant even in the hot summer months. At the northernmost area of Burgas beach is where the annual sand festival takes place.
When David was there he was lucky enough to see the incredible sand sculptures. The theme in 2013 was “Famous People Throughout History.” There were sand sculptures of Albert Einstein and his theory of relativity, Isaac Newton with his theory of gravity, and of course other important figures in other areas such as music, politics, and literature.
After the sand festival, David heads to the center of town, the major commercial district of Burgas. Along Bogoridi and Alexandrovska Streets there are several restaurants, cafes, ice cream shops, and stores to keep you busy for a while. The entire city center of Burgas is pedestrian-friendly, making it easy to walk around.
Since David is a history buff, he went to the Archaeological Museum of Burgas to check out some of the amazing artifacts uncovered from beneath modern-day Burgas. The museum houses a collection of ancient findings from the Stone Age, Greek and Roman eras, and Thracian civilization. David’s favorite exhibit was the Roman tombstones.
Now for the best places to eat in Burgas: First stop is a restaurant that had recently opened when David visited. Ethno serves up an array of grilled meat and seafood in a modern setting. He also tastes a semi-sweet white wine from the nearby Varna region.
Rose is another amazing restaurant, and one of the best places in Burgas to see and be seen. Rose is situated along the main pedestrian street (Bogoridi) in a remodeled 200-year-old home. The menu is French-Mediterranean fusion cuisine. Salads here are to die for, as are the daily specials.
On to the next great restaurant in Burgas, Vodenitsa, which means “Windmill Restaurant.” Located by the beach, Vodenitsa serves traditional Bulgarian fare. The amazing heap of grilled meat you see here is a pork sac (pronounced “sach”) It is like a skillet of meat with veggies. Sac is traditionally served with bread and salad. David recommends making a reservation here in advance on a night that they have live music.

David's Been Here is touring all the top things to see and do in the Bulgarian city of Ruse. Situated along the picturesque Danube River, this ancient city was established in the 1st century A.D. by the Romans and is home to some fantastic culture, history and architecture. With over 300 historical buildings in the city, there's no wondering why its nickname is Little Vienna. Tour around as David shows us some of the must visit sites in Ruse. From the pedestrian-friendly Alexsandrovska Street and the bustling Liberty Square to the old city walls and ancient Roman Fortress, visitors will be captivated and intrigued by this world-class city. For a walk through Ruse & Bulgaria's history, a visit to the Regional Museum of History and Pantheon of National Heroes are a few musts. If you're looking for accommodation or dining options, the Hotel Vega, Mehana Chiflika (for traditional Bulgarian) or Leventa Complex (upscale food & winery) are excellent choices.

David's Been Here's epic road trip through Bulgaria takes him to the capital, where David explore the best sights in Sofia. Known for its history, thriving nightlife, and celebrated restaurant scene, Sofia is a must for any traveler headed to the Bulgaria or the Balkans. In this episode David showcases the best sights in Sofia, exploring the remains of the ancient Roman city of Serdica.
With a history spanning thousands of years, it no wonder there has been so much uncovered in Sofia. First stop featured here is at the illustrious Neo-Byzantine Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. It is one of the largest Eastern Orthodox Churches in the world! As you can see, the interior walls are beautifully painted with religious scenes and saints. From the outside the Cathedral stands out from the rest of the skyline with its signature gold-plated dome.
Next stop on the tour takes David underground to see the remains of the ancient fortress of Serdika. The fortress's eastern gate is visible in the underpass between the Presidency and the Council of Ministers in Sofia. The remains found here were excavated in the late 1990s and preserved for all to see.
Housed within what formally was the largest Ottoman Mosque in Sofia is the National Archaeological Museum, a beautiful open space of artifacts spanning millennia (Early, Middle and Late Paleolithic collection, Neolithic collection, Chalcolithic collection, and Bronze Age). There are also collections from ancient Thrace, Greece and Rome to the late Middle Ages. The museum's most priceless item, the gold Thracian burial mask, is also on display.
No visit to Sofia is complete without a stroll along the pedestrian-friendly Vitosha Boulevard. Named after a nearby mountain, Vitosha Boulevard is a shopper's heaven, with dozens of high-fashion labels and boutiques along the way. Vitosha Boulevard is the main commercial street in the city. It is filled with people day and night, which makes it a popular place for tourists to stay. David's hotel, Le Fleurs, is a fantastic boutique hotel with a great central location.
David then makes a stop to see the remains of the ancient Serdica Amphitheatre, or Arena di Serdica. What is left has been preserved and is free for anyone to see. The Serdica Amphitheatre is situated in the basement level of the Arena di Serdica Hotel in the city center. If you pay close attention, you will see paw prints in ceramic stone made over 7 centuries years ago!
After the Amphitheatre, David is off to see the St. George Church Rotunda (Sveti George). Enclosed in a courtyard between the Sheraton Hotel and the Presidency, St. George Church is believed to be the oldest monument in the city, dating back to the beginning of the 4th century A.D. For a small entrance fee visitors can enter to see the multi-layered murals on the church walls. Around the St. George Church there are fragments of buildings from ancient Serdica.
Last but not least David makes it to St. Sofia Church (Sveta Sofia). Built in the 6th century A.D. the St. Sofia Church is the second oldest church in Sofia. From the outside it may not look like much, but David got the chance to head underneath the church to check out the preserved Roman necropolis. This underground museum holds some of the most significant archaeological finds in the Balkans. The museum features remains of over 50 tombs, mosaics and artefacts dating back to Byzantine and Roman times that can be seen on several underground levels.

Bulgaria is a beautiful country located on the Black Sea with a rich and long history. A people called the Bulgur's inhabited the region now known as Bulgaria in 650 AD giving the modern name to the country. Bulgaria joined the European Union in 2007 after meeting the strict requirements for membership. Tourism has become increasingly popular in part to the diverse interests between majestic skiing slopes in the mountains and sunbathing beaches on the Black Sea. Here are five things you might not know about Bulgaria.

97% of Bulgarians own their own home. This is the highest private home ownership rate in the word. Interestingly, 97,9 % of privately owned homes have at least one television set; while only 93 % possess a refrigerator.

Earliest prehistoric man lived in what is now Bulgaria. Cave paintings from 44,000 BC exist in Bacho Kiro cave. The oldest recovered artifacts made from gold have also been located in Bulgaria. Coins, jewelry and weapons dated from 4,600 BC were found in excavated burial sites in 1972.

The earliest organized culture in Bulgaria was the Thracian's. Spartacus was a Thracian born in Bulgaria. As a Roman sympathizer turned gladiator slave, he led a revolt defeating the much larger Roman armies on several occasions.

The Rila Cross is a stature carved over twelve years by a Bulgarian Monk named Rafail until 1802 when he became blind. On the wooden cross, that stands less than 32 inches in height and 17 inches in width, are 104 scenes from the bible, as well as 650 figures.

The first electronic digital computer was invented by the Bulgarian John Atanassoff during the years 1937-1942. Today, there is an annual John Vincent Atanassoff award given by the Bulgarian president to honor achievement in computer engineering.
