California to New York: A Complete Road Trip
This is a complete road trip compilation from Santa Monica, California to New York City over eight different days from June-September, 2017 - all recorded in time-lapse at 4fps (nearly 100,000 frames total). Of the 3,253 miles (5,235 kilometers) driven, about 3 miles of this drive is missing, mostly in Colorado near Poncha Springs. Nearly all of this drive was done in daytime, but there is about 10 minutes of this video done in darkness in Arizona (about 1:00:00 to 1:10:00). The weather was good for the most part, except from Pennsylvania all the way to the Bronx, before clearing up in Manhattan. This trip also includes driving through the solar eclipse of August 21 in Nebraska (at about 3:30:00), as well as driving over the old Tappan Zee Bridge in upstate NY, which permanently closed a month later with the opening of the new Mario M Cuomo Bridge adjacent to it.
The states passed through are
California (0:00:35-0:40:54)
Arizona (0:40:54-1:40:26)
New Mexico (1:40:26-1:41:09)
Colorado (1:41:09-3:07:17)
Nebraska (3:07:17-3:51:05)
Iowa (3:51:05-4:24:17)
Illinois (4:24:17-4:50:42)
Indiana (4:50:42-5:10:51)
Ohio (5:10:51-5:39:13)
West Virginia (5:39:13-5:40:48 & 5:47:09-5:51:52)

Maryland (5:51:52-6:04:43)
New York (6:32:49-6:50:03)
The highest elevation of the drive was 11,539 ft (3,517 m) at 2:28:10. The highest elevation anywhere on the U.S. interstate system is 11,158 ft (3,401 m) at 2:33:41. Both of these elevations are two of the three continental divide crossings; the other, at 2:04:38 (10,856 ft / 3,309 m), is the first.
The hottest temperature of this trip was 110 F (43 C) in Needles, California (about 0:40:16), and the coldest temperature of this trip was 53 F (11 C) in Tusayan, Arizona (about 1:10:04) - only about 230 miles (370 km) from Needles.

This property was hit really bad by Hurricane Ivan in 2004 and again by Hurricane Wilma in 2005, and suffered damages from unimaginable amounts of flooding.
The owners have since been involved with extensive clean up and repair work to get the building back into shape. They plan to reopen soon, but have yet to announce an official date.

A Walk Through The Beautiful and Elegant Biltmore Hotel, Downtown Los Angeles
The Millennium Biltmore Hotel, originally named the Los Angeles Biltmore Hotel of the Biltmore Hotels group, is a luxury hotel located across the street from Pershing Square in Downtown Los Angeles, California, US. Upon its grand opening in 1923, the Los Angeles Biltmore was the largest hotel west of Chicago, Illinois in the United States. In 1969 the Biltmore Hotel was designated a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument by the City of Los Angeles. Regal Hotels purchased the Biltmore in 1996, and then sold it in 1999 to Millennium & Copthorne Hotels. As of 2009, the Los Angeles Biltmore is operated as part of the Millennium & Copthorne Hotels chain as the Millennium Biltmore Hotel. The hotel has 70,000 square feet of meeting and banquet space. From its original 1500 guestrooms it now has 683, due to room reorganization.
The architectural firm Schultze & Weaver designed the Biltmore's exterior in a synthesis of the Spanish-Italian Renaissance Revival, Mediterranean Revival, and Beaux Arts styles, meant as an homage to the Castilian heritage of Los Angeles. The Biltmore Angel is heavily incorporated into the design—as a symbol of the city as well as the Biltmore itself. With a thick steel and concrete frame, the structure takes up half a city block and rises over 11 stories.
The interiors of the Biltmore Hotel are decorated with: frescos and murals; carved marble fountains and columns; massive wood-beamed ceilings; travertine and oak paneled walls; lead crystal chandeliers; cast bronze stairwells and doorways; fine artisan marquetry and mill work; and heavily embroidered imported tapestries and draperies. Most notable are the frescoed mural ceilings in the main Galleria and the Crystal Ballroom, which were hand painted in 1922 by Italian artist Giovanni Smeraldi, known for his work in the Vatican and the White House. Smeraldi and his team famously painted the ballroom's colorful, seamless fresco over a period of seven months, decorating it with figures of Greek and Roman gods, angels, cupids and other mythological creatures. It was meticulously restored in the 1980s by Smeraldi's apprentice, Anthony Heinsbergen. The imported Austrian crystal chandeliers that adorn it are 12 feet (3 in diameter.
The Rendezvous Court, once the hotel's lobby but now used primarily for afternoon tea, is decorated with a Moorish Revival styled plaster ceiling painted with 24 Carat Gold accents, two original imported Italian chandeliers from 1923, and a grand Spanish Baroque Revival bronze doorway, whose astrological clock still keeps time today. Two figures appear on the stairwell front—on the left is the Roman goddess of agriculture Ceres, while on the right is the Spanish explorer Vasco Núñez de Balboa. The current lobby at the hotel's Grand Avenue entrance still has its original travertine walls and oak paneling as well as the large artificial skylighted ceiling, reflected in the custom carpet below.
Millennium Biltmore Hotel Galleria
Each ballroom on the Galleria level is themed either after the room's original function or the hotel's overall California-heritage premise. The Emerald Room was once the hotel's main guest dining room; its decor features images of hunt and harvest, with hand-painted animals and fish on the cast-plaster ceiling beams. The Tiffany Room was formerly an open corridor used as a drop-off point for Crystal Ballroom functions. Now enclosed, the elegant space centers around exploration, with relief sculptures and panels depicting Queen Isabella I of Castile, and Christopher Columbus and other Spanish New World explorers. The split-level Gold Room, once a dining room for elite guests, features Prohibition-era hidden liquor compartments and panels along the ceiling for press photographers to take pictures of the event below. It is decorated with a gold cast-plaster ceiling, hand-oiled wood paneling, and nine mirrored windows along three sides.
The South Galleria is painted with floral friezes inspired by the decor of ancient Roman Pompeii, and features a vaulted ceiling, marble balustrades and heavy Roman piers. Gold-painted wrought iron gates open to a staircase leading down to the Biltmore Bowl.
Also of interest is the hotel's health club and indoor pool, which was modeled after the decks of 1920s luxury ocean liners. Solid brass trim on windows, doors and railings, teakwood deck chairs and hand-laid Italian mosaic tile on the walls and in the pool are original.
Personal Safety for RVers w/Jim Koca (Webinar #22)
Welcome to Escapees Webinars! These broadcasts are intended to connect the RV-curious, or even experienced RVer, with those who have in-depth knowledge of various facets of the lifestyle.
Here, we spoke with Jim Koca, Director of Education for Escapees RV Club. He travels full-time in his RV with his wife, Lisa. They split their time between teaching RVers Boot Camp sessions and hosting adventures for fellow RVers, all for Escapees RV Club. In addition to his work with Escapees, Jim is a retired law enforcement officer, has many years of experience in accident reconstruction, and has an insatiable curiosity for how things work.
In this broadcast, Jim shared several important tips for protecting both yourself and your property as you enjoy your RV. His advice comes from his years of traveling in various types of RVs, research conducted while working in law enforcement, and bits of information he has learned from fellow RVers himself!
Tips covered today:
Find a safe RV park- there are many apps and websites out there to help you research ideal parks and learn from others' experience.
Install motion lights- very useful when you're returning to your rig after dark or need to take the dog out for a late night potty break
Replace your bay/storage locks- MANY other items out there have this identical key, CH 751, so replacing your locks makes it harder for a thief to get into your storage bays (ch751.com)
Hide your valuables- use products like Hide-a-Cans, fireproof safes, and other methods of concealment to secure your valuable belongings
Get a cellphone booster- these help you maintain a usable signal even in some remote areas
Choose your self-defense weapons carefully- Jim covers several of the options, from firearms to defensive sprays
Carry a weather radio- stay aware of your surroundings
Install a peephole in your RV door- this allows you to see who is knocking without opening your door
For solo travelers, pick up spare boots or a dog leash and keep them outside your rig- this indicates you aren't as alone as someone may assume
Don't be afraid to move- if you're uncomfortable with where you've parked, move
Keep your key fob handy- you can use it to set off your alarm to notify someone you need help or to deter an intruder
For solo travelers, use tracking apps or coordinates to share your location with trusted friends
Avoid posting your travels to social media in real-time
Consider installing a deadbolt on your RV door- -it's much stronger than the factory lock
If leaving your towable behind, use hitch locks to make it harder to steal your trailer
