The steepest funicular railway in the world has opened in Switzerland, with gradients of up to 110 per cent.
Running from the valley floor in the town of Schwyz up to the village of Stoos, which is located on a plateau beneath the Fronalpstock mountain.
The funicular has been praised for its revolutionary design, with four cylindrical cabins that adjust to changes in gradient so the floor is always level.
Swiss engineering and technology have reached new heights with the opening of the world’s steepest funicular rail line.
A level-adjusting function will allow the space-age-looking carriages, accessible to all users, to remain horizontal while speeding up the mountain at up to 10 metres a second.
The train, two lines of cylindrical carriages, resembling beer barrels, will allow passengers to remain upright at all times, even as they ascend – or descend – the 1,720-metre track, climbing or descending 743 metres along gradients as steep as 110% (47.7º).

Stoos to Fronalpstock, Switzerland
Zip up to Stoos in a state-of-the-art funicular in this video!
Stoos is a small village with only 100 residents, but a lot of impressive views. The village welcomes visitors. You can stay at Hotel Stoos or rent an apartment or house. This village is especially well known because it was the birth place of Heidi Beeler, a Swiss Olympic skier. Stoos is a small ski resort and a great place to hike in the summer. There are no cars in the village so you can really unwind from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
The Stoos funicular is a powerful machine that cuts out hours of hiking and makes some amazing views accessible to many. It has been named the world’s steepest funicular. It covers 743 vertical meters in just over three minutes, carrying passengers from the funicular station, which is 3 km southeast of the city of Schwyz to Stoos. Its circular cars move around one another as the grade changes to ensure a comfortable and safe ride. It accommodates extreme inclines while keeping passengers safe on a horizontal plane. This masterful engineering feat took 14 years to conceptualize and execute. We think the benefits are remarkable!
As you can see in this film, the village of Stoos is quaint and ideally situated in the alpine terrain. It is located at the foot of Fronalpstock Mountain. Fronalpstock stands at 1,922 meters overlooking lakes and mountains. From this vantage point you can see beautiful views of Lake Lucerne. Visitors can enjoy lunch at Gipfelrestaurant (Summit Restaurant Fronalpstock) or even stay the night at the Fronalpstock Hotel.

The world’s steepest funicular line has opened to the public in Switzerland
It looks like a string of giant hamster wheels, but the world's steepest funicular railway is being hailed for its revolutionary design.
The cabins on the 52 million-Swiss franc ($52.6 million) funicular in the Swiss alpine resort of Stoos resemble rotating drums that keep passengers level as the gradient changes.
The 1,720-meter track will run from the valley floor near Schwyz to car-free Stoos, which sits on a lofty plateau beneath the Fronalpstock mountain at 1,300 meters (4,300 feet) near Lake Lucerne.
The track, which travels through the mountainside for part of its journey, rises 743 meters along gradients as steep as 110%.
Each of the four cabins can carry 34 people at a speed of 10 meters per second.
The line replaces an older funicular which had been in operation since 1933.
After 14 years of planning and building, everyone is very proud of this train, said Ivan Steiner, a spokesman for the railway, which opens to the public Sunday.
The previous steepest funicular was the Gelmerbahn, with a gradient of 106%, which climbs to the Gelmersee lake in the Bern region of Switzerland.
( World Record ) Steepest funicular in Switzerland
110% is the maximum slope - world record!
At 1738 meters
The maximum speed is 10 meters / second.
drive from Schwyz to the Stoos now only takes between 3 to 5 minutes.
34 people holds a cabin. One calculates:
With 4 cabins per car this results in a capacity of 136 persons.
