Tasmania Top 10 things to do & see
These are the absolute highlights for a visit to Tasmania, Australia. The island of Tasmania is located 250 km south of the mainland of Australia and can be reached by boat or airplane. It is named after the Dutch explorer Abel Tasman. The island has a population of about 500.000 and the capital is Hobart.
1. Cradle Mountain - surrounded by glacial lakes, ancient rainforest, and unusual alpine vegetation. From here you can start the Overland Track.
2. Bay of Fires - Fabulously coloured stones in this Bay, but the name of the bay comes from the many fires of Tasmanian Aboriginals that were seen by Thomas Furneaux in 1773.
3. Maria Island - The island is shaped like a number eight and is completely protected as a national park. You can enjoy the fossilated cliffs and the painted cliffs at low tide
4. Wineglass Bay - Freycinet National park harvests the perfectly curved Wineglass Bay
5. Launceston - The largest single span chairlift over the fabulous Cataract Gorge
6. South West National Park - Tasmania's largest national park harvests wild rivers and rugged mountains. It is very desolate, so bring all your supplies with you.
7. Port Arthur Historic Site - Marvel at the spooky ruins and restored homes where many convicts were being punished from the prison's establishment in1830 until its closure in 1877
8. Remarkable Cave - This cave is really remarkable. At low tide you can walk through the cave, but at high tide you have to avoid the big waves
9. Penguin - watching penguins come ashore on the north coast of Tasmania
10. Hobart - Panoramic views from Mount Wellington to Bruny Island, South Arm and the Tasman Peninsula

We haven't seen raw, natural and wild outdoor beauty like this since our trip to New Zealand. While touring about Tasmania we highly recommend taking that long, winding, dead end road in the centre of the map. This scenic drive will take you to Strathgordon.
There is heaps of camping along the way but unfortunately you won't find too many pet friendly locations. The weather was all over the place during our time here. We had a little of everything including snow. All the mountains in the area were capped with snow too.
Near Strathgordon you will find Gordon Dam and Lake Pedder. Though the road to Strathgordon is a one way return, you won't be disappointed in your options. You will find heaps of hiking, fishing and camping in this pristine wilderness.
Enjoy the video! The music has been composed by my good friend John Muller.

Tasmania Road Trip - Living in a Van
More than 2.400km around Tasmania in 13 days on my Ford Econovan, me and my mates Andrea and Nick. Starting from Devonport, visiting the Leven Canyon, hiking on the top of the Cradle Mountain National Park, driving along the remotest lands on the east side until the Nelson Falls and the Frenchman’s Lookout, walking along the Lake St. Claire, camping on a hill in Ellendale enjoying a stunning Milky Way, challenging the strong wind of the Mount Field National Park, till the cold walls of Strathgordon, coming back to the civilization in Hobart for the first shower before to have a dip in the frozen restoring water of South East Cape, tasting the oysters in Bruny Island, exploring the massive cliffs and watching the wales of Tasman Peninsula and Cape Hauy, visiting friends in Richmond and enjoying a glass of wine on the top of Mount Amos in front of Wineglass Bay, camping on the Bay of Fires shores and below the St. Columba Falls, talking by the fire surrounded by millions of beetles in the wilderness of Water House National Park, along the hills of the Great Lake, before the last unforgettable night in Hobart, ended with a last cheers in Launceston.
La Bella Vita as we use to say in Italy, without comfort, living on a van, without shower and facilities, where home is the place where you decide to camp… this is the backpacker life.
