The population of Styria in its historical boundaries amounts to around 705,000 inhabitants, or 34.5% of the population of Slovenia. The largest city is Maribor.

  • 2. Church of St. George Ptuj
    St. George's Church is a parish church in Ptuj, northeastern Slovenia. It was built in the 12th century and in the 15th century redesigned in the Gothic style. Viewed from Slovene Square , it is located behind the monolithic Roman tombstone, the Monument of Orpheus, and the free standing Town Tower. There are Renaissance and Baroque gravestones on the exterior walls of the church. The paintings in the interior were made from the late 13th to the end of the 15th century. In 1863 the church became Provost.

    Ptuj is a town in northeastern Slovenia that is the seat of the Municipality of Ptuj. Ptuj, the oldest recorded city in Slovenia, has been inhabited since the late Stone Age and developed from a Roman military fort. Ptuj was located at a strategically important crossing of the Drava River, along a prehistoric trade route between the Baltic Sea and the Adriatic. Traditionally the area was part of the Styria region and became part of the Austria-Hungarian Empire. In the early 20th century the majority of the residents were ethnic Germans, but today the population is largely Slovene. Residents of Ptuj are known as Ptujčani in Slovene.

    Maribor Synagogue is a former synagogue and current museum in the city of Maribor, Slovenia. Located in what was the center of the medieval Maribor ghetto Židovska ulica , it is one of the oldest preserved synagogues in Europe, and one of only two left in Slovenia; the other being the Lendava Synagogue . It once functioned as the centre of the medieval Jewish community in Maribor, among the most prominent in the Eastern Alps-area.

  • 11. Judgement Tower Maribor
    The Judgement Tower is a fortified medieval tower in the city of Maribor, Slovenia. An original tower built on the site in the early 14th century secured the southwestern corner of the city walls. It was completely rebuilt in 1540, with the addition of a conical roof which burned down in the 17th century. The tower has seen several additions; the renaissance structure extends to the tops of the second-floor windows, and is followed an early 17th-century extension. Four more floors were added in the 19th century. The tower partially burned down again in 1937 and was restored in the 1950s. It is one of several surviving elements of the former city walls; others include the Water Tower and the Jewish Tower, while the Benetke Tower was demolished in the late 1960s to make way for a hydroelectr...
