Tenerife Travel Guide: Top 10 Things To Do (4K)
I have put together this Tenerife Travel Guide to share my experience of the island and hopefully give an insight into the many different excursions and day trips you can do, as well as some of the less touristy spots too.
This video covers flights to Tenerife, Tenerife hire car, and Tenerife accommodation.
More Car Hire Info:
This Tenerife top 10 travel guide includes: Teide National Park, Siam Park, whale and dolphin watching, Tenerife beaches, Icod, Masca, Santa Cruz, Spanish fiestas and more.
In my experience, people come to Tenerife for the sunshine and sometimes don't leave their all inclusive resort which is a huge shame as Tenerife has so much to offer. Hopefully my Tenerife Top 10 may persuade you to explore further if you're planning a trip to Tenerife.
Tenerife is part of the Canary Islands and my family have been taking their holiday here for over 30 years. Tenerife and the Canary Islands hold a special place in my heart and I want to share with you why.

SPAIN El Teide national park, Tenerife (Canary Islands)
(Revisit)
Very popular destinations for day visitors from the coast. The crater lies on a height of 2000 meters. The roads are in a very good condition and are several viewpoints with carparks. Because of the height it can be a bit cold out there. We visited the park several times and one day there was a little snow on the mountain.
Teide National Park , Tenerife ( Canary Island) [IGEO TV]
Teide National Park is located Tenerife Island, in the Canary Archipelago. It was declared as national park on 22 January 1954, making it one of the oldest national parks in Spain. It is the most visited National Park in Spain and one of the most visited in Europe and in the world.
It is one of the most spectacular geological monuments of the world where volcanic cones and lava flows form an extraordinary landscape. The park also has an important biological diversity, with a high percentage of endemic species, including the Canary Island Lizard, the Blue Chaffinch, the Teide Violet, the Teide bugloss or the Teide Broom.
The area of the park known as the Cañadas del Teide is a sedimentary plain at the foot of Mount Teide and Pico Viejo. The Circo de las Cañadas is one of the largest calderas in the world, has an elliptical shape, with 16 km of major axis, 10 Km of minor axis and 45 Km of perimeter.
The National Park has in the Mount Teide (3,718 m) the highest peak, which is also the highest in Spain. Next to Teide is the Pico Viejo, which features a crater 0f 800 meters in diameter and an altitude of 3,100 meters of height.
The volcanic landscape, the lights, and the shades of the great peaks of the park, along with great variety of plants and fauna species, presents itself as a unique place in the world, it comes to be a real treasure of nature.

TEIDE NATIONAL PARK - Parque Nacional del Teide - Tenerife 4K
Teide National Park is a national park located in Tenerife dominated by the 3,781 m Teide-Pico Viejo, third tallest volcanic structure in the world.
If you go to Tenerife, one of the main spots you definitely want to go to is the Teide National Park with it's famous volcano Mount Teide.
Of course, the main attraction is the Mount Teide volcano as it's the third biggest island volcano of the world. But you will also find very beautiful trails around the national park.
I did that at first and after I knew the Teide National Park a bit better, I decided to hike the volcano over night to see the sunset. Most people use the cable car to go to the summit, but that requires a permit (it's free but limited) and if you want to see the sunrise, you would need to drive up at around 3-4pm and sleep at the Altavista Mountain Refugio. So to do that you would need to get a permit, book the cable car and book the Altavista in advance.
Way too much planning in my opinion.
So I kept it easy and went up over night. I started around midnight at Montana Blanca and arrived at the top of Mount Teide with a one hour break at the Altavista Mountain Refugio. So the whole trek took me around 7,5 hours.
The way up is pretty easy, as it's an actual path. But I strongly recommend to use walking sticks as it makes going up a lot easier. I didn't even had sore muscles after the trek and I'm not trained and my last hike (only 1,5 hours) was around two months ago. It was the hike to Mount Ijen. See my video about the trip here:
Also the break at the Altavista Mountain Refugio was very nice as you can get some coffee, soft drink and snacks there. They also have a kitchen and a water cooker if you want to bring some instant soup with you ;-)
So the break is very good to warm up from the cold outside. It's actually important to do a break there as there's a lot of cold wind at the summit of Mount Teide. So you don't want to wait there too long for the sunrise.
When you arrived at the top and see the sunrise, you know that it's worth it. The view is incredible as you are over the clouds and on a not so cloudy day you can see the other canary islands. Even with clouds I was able to see the whole island of Tenerife from the top. Absolutely amazing!
There is also a phenomenon at the opposite side of the sun as there you can see a shadow from the volcano in the form of a triangle. Mount Teide doesn't actually have the form of a triangle. So that looks a bit like a wonder.
To go down again, I used the cable car. I didn't buy a ticket in advance for that and it worked fine. When I arrived down I also had to walk three more kilometers as my car was at the starting point at Montana Blanca.
Altogether it was a very nice and not too hard hike compared to my hike to Mount Agung on Bali one year ago. The only real challenging thing is the cold up there. So be prepared ;-)

Some facts about Tenerife:
Tenerife is the largest and most populated island of the seven Canary Islands.
About five million tourists visit Tenerife each year, the most of any of the Canary Islands. It is one of the most important tourist destinations in Spain and the world.
Tenerife hosts one of the world's largest carnivals and the Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is working to be designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Served by two airports, Tenerife North Airport and Tenerife South Airport, Tenerife is the economic centre of the archipelago.
The 1977 collision of two Boeing 747 passenger jets at Tenerife North Airport, resulting in 583 deaths, remains the deadliest aviation accident in world history.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the capital of the island and the seat of the island council (cabildo insular).
The city is capital of the autonomous community of Canary Islands (shared with Las Palmas), sharing governmental institutions such as Presidency and ministries.
Between the 1833 territorial division of Spain and 1927, Santa Cruz de Tenerife was the sole capital of the Canary Islands. In 1927 the Crown ordered that the capital of the Canary Islands be shared, as it remains at present.
Santa Cruz contains the modern Auditorio de Tenerife, the architectural symbol of the Canary Islands.
The island is home to the University of La Laguna; founded in 1792 in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, it is the oldest university in the Canaries. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the city is the second to have been founded on the island,
and is the third of the archipelago. The city of La Laguna was capital of the Canary Islands before Santa Cruz replaced it in 1833.
Teide National Park, a World Heritage Site in the center of the island, has Teide, the highest elevation of Spain, the highest of the islands of the Atlantic Ocean, and the third-largest volcano in the world from its base.
Also located on the island, Macizo de Anaga since 2015 has been designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. It has the largest number of endemic species in Europe.
