Oakland often gets passed up since most people chose to only visit San Francisco when they are in the area. That is a mistake though as Oakland has a lot of great places to explore and a lot of charm to offer. Let's Visit the Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve to See the Poppies in Bloom

In this video we take a trip to the Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve. The brilliant orange blooms of the California Poppies are definitely something everyone should experience for themselves. But as you have probably heard before, some years produce a better bloom than others.
Fortunately the rain fall for the winter of 2016-2017 has set up a vigorous bloom, and we had a chance to visit the reserve on March 29, 2017 in the midst of an impressive bloom.
The wildflower fields were most spectacular this year on the eastern side of the park. We took the trail up to Butte Vista Point then wrapped back around a hill on the eastern edge that showcased a gorgeous display of both poppies and some other wildflowers as well.
Our whole journey was probably around 3 miles, and at a leisurely pace, took about 2.5 hours to complete, with plenty of time to stop and take photos.
Some advice if you’re going:
1. Go EARLY and go on a WEEKDAY if at all possible. When the bloom is good it draws big crowds. When we left the park around noon on a Wednesday the line to drive into the park was spilling out on to Lancaster Road.
2. Definitely bring water and sun protection. You'll be hating yourself if you don't
3. Parking is $10 but you need cash and we needed exact change so we could probably deposit the payment for our day pass.
4. Park hours are sunrise to sunset. We got there at 8:15 a.m. and it was already getting a bit crowded. By the time we left at noon-ish it was a madhouse.
DrivingDirections:
The Reserve is located 15 miles west of Lancaster at 15101 Lancaster Road.
From Highway 14: Take the Avenue I exit and head west 15 miles. Avenue I becomes Lancaster Road. It'll be on the right.
From I-5: Take Hwy 138 east and turn right on 170th Street West. Make a left at the end, onto Lancaster Road. Follow the road two miles.

In this video, I show off some remarkable footage of the Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve in full bloom. The rolling hills and nearby farms are carpeted in vivid color!
With the plentiful winter rains, it's turned out to be a banner year for the little orange poppies and other assorted wildflowers. the reserve is located 15 miles west of Highway 14 near the city of Lancaster. The visitor center is located 1/2 mile north of the intersection of 150th St W & Lancaster Road.
We visited on April 3rd, 2019. Even though it was a Wednesday afternoon the place was still packed with people that had driven out to see the wondrous sight. Parking in the reserve cost $10.
We have passed by this area at least a half dozen times but our timing has never been just right or the area didn't get enough rain for the impressive super bloom to take place. We were pretty stoked to finally be able to see it.
Another one scratched off the old bucket list. :)

After long years of drought in California, the skies finally opened to produce good winter rains and mountain snow, which have now turned the valleys & deserts of the southern part of the state into a carpet of flowers – explosions of blooms and they are known as super blooms !!

Big Horn Mine : Miner Vincent Cabin : LA Hiking Trails : California Travel Tips
In this episode of California Travel Tips, Veronica Hill ( goes on one of LA's best hikes — the trek to Big Horn Mine and Miner Vincent's Cabin in the San Gabriel Mountains.
The trailhead to the cabin and mine is located at Vincent Gap on Highway 2 (Angeles Crest Highway), which connects metropolitan Los Angeles with the mountain village of Wrightwood. Be sure to buy a $5 adventure pass at the Grassy Hollow Visitor Center before heading out, or you're likely be fined. You can also buy passes at Jensen's in Wrightwood, or Big 5 Sporting Goods stores.
Plan on a half day for the moderate 4-mile round trip hike to Big Horn Mine, which follows an old wagon trail around the north slope of Mount Baden-Powell. The hike to Vincent's Cabin is roughly 2 miles round trip. Be sure to bring along snacks, plenty of water, sunscreen, and some bug spray.
When you come upon the signs, you're going to want to stay right for the mine, or head downhill to the left for Vincent's Cabin. The cabin trail heads down into the valley, cutting through several types of terrain. During the hike, you'll see wildflowers, manzanita, Jeffrey pines, and even a lizard or two.
There's no cell service out here, so I always carry my GPS to make sure I'm going in the right direction. You can download directions with the EveryTrail app.
When you come upon these two downed trees you're going to cross the log and head down the trail. After walking nearly 25 minutes, the cabin comes into view. This little clearing was the home of prospector Charles Vincent Dougherty, a Civil War veteran who arrived in Los Angeles around 1868. On the run for murdering an Arizona claim jumper in self defense, he ended up hiding out here in San Gabriel mountains.
He built a one-room cabin with shingles hewn from nearby trees, and changed his name to Charles Tom Vincent. The fireplace was crafted from locally harvested stone, and Vincent placed two bunks on each side of the fireplace. He lived here in solitude for nearly 40 years. While you're here, you can check out some of Vincent's artifacts, including old tin cans, bottle caps and a frying pan. Be sure to leave everything as you found it so others can enjoy its historical significance.
In 1895, while hunting Big Horn Sheep, Vincent struck gold. Big Horn Mine produced 3,701 ounces of gold, 2,430 ounces of silver and 1,357 pounds of copper — generating roughly 100,000 dollars. Recently, the gold mine and its surrounding 277 acres was purchased by the U.S. Forest Service for $2 million.
According to the L.A. Times, there are still roughly 262,000 ounces of gold in the mine — which is worth more than $430 million today.
There are a few washed out areas and scrambles to get to the mine, but it's well worth the trek. The crumbling mine complex is quite impressive, with a maze of passages and tunnels totaling about 3,500 feet. If you peek inside, you can still see some of the ore cart rails, but most of the sites have been blocked off (and it's always a bad idea to enter an old mine shaft). The Bighorn Mine stamp mill is very rickety, but offers amazing views of the valley, Mount Baldy and Iron Mountain. This is a great place to stop for lunch before heading back down to Vincent Gap. We think this is one of LA's best hikes. Hope you do too!
Vincent lived in this valley until the age of 83, making yearly trips into LA to watch the baseball games. He'd bring along a sack of gold each time, placing it in a safe deposit box. Vincent died in 1926, and is buried at the National Cemetery in Los Angeles.

In this episode of Travel Man Dan I am having an amazing adventure exploring a rare phenomena called the Southern California SUPER BLOOM of 2019!! This place is an unbelievable exciting place of beauty and amazement that your going to love watching!
This video was shot to show people the 2019 Super Bloom and how pretty this site looks when I’m full Bloom. Although there are many Super Blooms going on in and around SoCal I filmed this video at Walker Canyon, near Lake Elsinore.
This episode was so much fun to film! Because here in LA we have been blessed with two Super Blooms within the past two years! We had one in 2017, which I knew nothing about- and this spring season thanks to excessive rain we were gifted another one of these natural beautiful landscapes! In this episode you will see the California state flower, which is the poppy and its vibrant orange color and exotic petals bursting with energy! Mixed in the fields of poppies are numerous types and bright purple, green and blue colors of wildflowers.
In this episode you'll see how many people are excited to come out and experience this “once in a while” sure to see. There were tens of thousands of people walking through the hillside to get a glimpse of the Flowergeddon! People from all over the state and probably the country flocked to this small canyon to enjoy this amazing afternoon. You’ll see in this episode landscape painters, model shoots, Instagram photos, and professional photography going on.
I would also like to advise you if you are thinking about checking this place out for yourself- definitely do, but please respect the natural habitat. Don’t stop on the flowers to get the perfect pic( chances are your alive and perfect already) or throw your trash in the bushes ( this is common knowledge when outdoors) overall just enjoy the scenery and take it all in with a sense of fulfillment that will leave you in awe of the beauty. Oh yeah one more thing..get there early, the earlier the better- this canyon isn’t made for this amount of people, and although the law enforcement is doing a wonderful job with traffic, I strongly recommend you arrive before 8am.
