La Fortuna - Arenal Volcano - Costa Rica (HD)
La Fortuna - Arenal Volcano Costa Rica (HD) Tourism & Vacation
Travel Videos HD, World Travel Guide
La Fortuna is a rural city located in San Carlos, in the province of Alajuela, Costa Rica.
La Fortuna received its name after the eruption of the Arenal Volcano in 1968. La Fortuna was originally called El Borio before the day of the eruption. In 1968, the Arenal Volcano erupted to the west, killing all in its path, including two villages. El Borio (La Fortuna) was located on the east side of the volcano and was untouched. After the eruption of the volcano, El Borio was renamed La Fortuna, which means the fortunate, referring to the towns luckiness during the eruption.
La Fortuna has the airport which is nearest to the Arenal Volcano, though many visitors also arrive via automobile, to the resorts and hotels in La Fortuna, Castillo, Palma, Monteverde, or Tilaran. Arenal is often cited by scientists as being in the top ten or top 20 of the world's most active volcanoes.[1] La Fortuna is less than 10 km from the peak of Arenal and less than 20 km from the entrance to Arenal Volcano National Park (the entrance is west of the peak, whereas La Fortuna is east of the peak).
Other than the volcano, La Fortuna has tourist attractions such as the La Catarata de la Fortuna, a waterfall that falls from a height of 70 meters, several resorts with natural hot springs temperate enough to bathe in, other day spa services, and day-trips which involve horseback riding, whitewater rafting, hanging bridges, a sky tram, zip-lines, mountain bike, kayak, stand-up paddleboard, and ATV or dirt bike rentals, butterfly farm and Venado Cavern tours, bungee jumping, Laguna Cedeno, El Salto Swimming Hole, and canyoneering.
La Fortuna has a medic station but serious injuries require a medivac (or long travel on roadways), a police station (and another is on the way to El Tapon), gas station, 3 banks, 3 groceries, restaurants (in addition to those in the resorts), post office, and hardware store.

====================
Arenal Volcano The photos at right are views from the village of El Castillo, on the southwest side of the Volcano, about 25 km west of La Fortuna and about 4km up the road from the Arenal National Park entrance. Additionally, there are great views of Lake Arenal and the Monteverde Cloud Forest from road up above El Castillo. In the evening hopefully you will see lava eruptions that can be quite spectacular set against the black night sky, but often it may be too cloudy to see the magnificent lava flows. Tours to the National Park usually start out in the early afternoon and include walking for about an hour through lava rocks before reaching El Mirador, the best place to view the eruption of the volcano. There are also possibilities of skipping the lava rock walking and go straight to El Mirador. Most tours state that they will stay for a hour/hour and half at this place, but if there is nothing to be seen probably a lot less. Also be aware that it might be chilly, so bring a jacket. The tours come in a variety of options: with buffet dinner and entrance to the Tabacon hot spa $64, with entrance to Baldi hot spa $30, just the tour $25. There is also a possibility of a no frills tour by mini-bus to El Mirador and back to Fortuna for $10.
Fortuna waterfall by horse $25. Stone steps lead to the bottom. Take a swimsuit for the pool in the lovely stream below. The entrance is accessible by road, so a cab works fine too. The entrance to the waterfall is about $10 and the ticket booth closes at 5pm. However, once you pay to go in, you are free to stay as long as you'd like. It's about a 10 minute hike down to the waterfall and 20 minutes back up.
Lake Arenal, is just west of the Arenal Volcano and can be seen as you drive over the dam on the main highway to Tilaran. Much better views of the lake and volcano can be seen from the hills above the village of El Castillo, which is located 9 km from the main highway on the Arenal National Park road. Activities on lake include boat tours, fishing, kayaking, and wind surfing.

The Arenal Volcano National Park is found in the northern region of Alajuela - next to the small town of La Fortuna. Most tourists visit the Arenal area before heading to the beaches as part of their Costa Rican Adventure, and with good reason!
Costa Rica is home to six active volcanoes, the most famous of all being the majestic Arenal Volcano. Rising up to 5,355 ft (1,633m) it is thought to be a relatively young volcano at around 7,000 years old.
It is one of the ten most active volcanoes in the world, making for an exciting visit. The last major eruption was back in 1968,- but has recently entered a resting phase as of December 2010. None the less - it remains a stunning iconic image of Costa Rica.
The geothermal activity in the area means the surrounding vegetation is lush and has plenty of flora and fauna. Of the 850 bird species found in Costa Rica, many of them can be spotted in the Arenal Region.
The underground thermal hot springs are a big attraction, and one of the main reasons you will find plenty of excellent resorts and boutique hotels in the area.
The Arenal Kioro Hotel comes highly recommended. It has some of the best views of the Volcano as it's located at the base! The on-site hot springs are a perfect spot to enjoy the views at night.
The best 5 Star option is The Springs Resort. It has an array of spacious suites, and multiple restaurants to dine at. Undoubtedly the highlight of The Springs Resort is the hot springs themselves, - many of which are hidden within the forest. These secluded spots are perfect to soak up the thermal waters at all times of the day.
If you are looking for a smaller, intimate boutique hotel you won't find any better than Arenal Nayara. Voted frequently one of the Top 10 hotels in the world, this small boutique hotel is the leader when it comes to service and comfort. The hotel has panoramic views of the Volcano from every private balcony in each colorful suite. The restaurants on site are renowned in the area offering up delicious evening meals. The Wine Bar is a true indulgence, offering some of the best wines from all over the Americas.
La Fortuna is Costa Rica's adventure Capital.This single area includes every adventure aspect Costa Rica has to offer: from the white water rafting on the Toro and Balsa Rivers to visiting La Fortuna Waterfall on horseback. The waterfall canyoneering adventure offers exciting thrills, and the famous zip-line canopy tour will make sure you have some amazing views of the local area!
There are plenty of tours and activities to choose from to keep everyone entertained.
Rio Celeste - MOST Famous Waterfall in Costa Rica
Rio Celeste Waterfall is world famous for its bright blue water. The mixture of the volcanic minerals from multiple river sources combine to form the unique and visually stunning blue color. Even though this hike gets very crowded, you can usually get there early and avoid the masses. We explored the trail on a rainy, overcast day so the color of the river was not at its brightest.

Tortuguero National Park, Costa Rica Tours (HD)
Tortuguero National Park, Costa Rica Tours - Costa Rica Vacation
Travel Videos HD, World Travel Guide
This is one of the few Costa Rican national parks where walking isn't necessarily the best way to see things. The marked trail along the beach is used mostly for observing turtle nesting, but the best way to see most of the park is from a boat. That doesn't mean you can't get a workout while nature watching; there are plenty of places to rent canoes and kayaks (cayucas or botes).
The area protected by Tortuguero (turtle catcher) National Park was an archipelago of volcanic islands until alluvial sediments from the interior mountains, filled in the spaces and formed a network of marshy islands. Sand piled up where the river deposited land met the sea, and the turtle nesting beaches of Tortuguero formed. The exceptionally high rainfall, and rich environment where the freshwater meets the sea makes the beaches, canals, lagoons and wetlands of Tortuguero areas of exceptional biodiversity, and opportunity for nature lovers.
Location: Tortuguero National Park, Costa Rica
==========
The Park is located on the Caribbean coast 52 miles (87 km) northwest of Limon. By air it is 50 miles (83 km) NW of San José, but the road and canal traveling distance between the two is ~160 miles (267 km).
Attractions Tortuguero National Park, Costa Rica
============
Turtles:
The main attraction of Tortuguero National Park is the turtles. Green Sea (tortuga Verde, Chelonia mydas mydas, Species Account), leatherback (tortuga Baula, Dermochelys coriacea), and Hawksbill (tortuga Carey, Eretmochelys imbricata, Species Account) turtles nest on the beaches here. Green Sea Turtles neared extinction due to hunting of the adults for meat (they are easy prey when they mass to nest) for turtle soup, and poaching of eggs for their supposed aphrodisiac qualities. Dr. Archie Carr of the University of Florida formed the Caribbean Conservation Corporation in 1959 to study and protect sea turtles, and the turtle-tagging program he began at Tortuguero in 1955 continues today.
It’s possible to see stragglers laying eggs during the day, but the mass arrivals (arribadas) occur at night usually under a waning moon. You will need a guide to visit the beaches at night (no one is allowed on the beach unaccompanied after 6:00 pm). For independent travelers, this can be arranged through the kiosk in the middle of Tortuguero village or through your hotel. When you and your guide walk out onto the beach under the starlight to watch the turtles struggle up the beach, dig their nests and lay their eggs, think about their future.
If you are exceptionally lucky, you might chance to see an even more spectacular event, the newly hatched turtles race to the sea. There is some overlap of the nesting and hatching seasons for the different varieties of turtles. The eggs incubate in the warm sand for 7 to 10 weeks before the babies hatch, dig their way to the surface and make the long dark scuttle from the nest well above the high tide mark, across the beach to the surf.
The Canals:
The extensive network of freshwater creeks and lagoons behind the beaches of Tortuguero are home to seven species of river turtles, Spectacled Caiman, Southern River Otters, a number of crustaceans, and over 50 species of freshwater fish. If you take a trip on a tour boat, or paddle a canoe through the freshwater canals you are also likely to see Spider, Howler and Capuchin Monkeys and dozens of species of birds. If you are lucky you might spot an endangered West Indian Manatee.
Fishing:
Atlantic Snook and Tarpon are just two of the species that attract anglers from all over the world to this region. A good friend of ours has taken several trips to the Río Parismina Lodge and counts them among the best experiences of his life.
