Mandelieu-la Napoule is a commune in the Alpes-Maritimes department in southeastern France, located on the French Riviera just to the southwest of Cannes and northeast of Théoule-sur-Mer. It is known for the Château de la Napoule, a fortified castle of the 14th century. In the 20th century, Henry Clews Jr (son of the wealthy New York banker Henry Clews) and his wife Marie Clews, entirely renovated the château which they then inhabited. Henry Clews Jr was a painter and sculptor whose work still fills the castle, which is now run as a non-profit arts foundation by his descendants.
The château was once an ancient foundation, then a medieval fortress of the Counts of Villeneuve. Today the Roman Tower (4th century) and the Saracen Tower (11th century) are all that remain of the château that was destroyed during the French Revolution. The château designed by the Clews has cloister, terrace overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, Gothic dining room, and studio. In the basement of a tower at the château the remains of Henry (1876–1937) and Marie (1878–1959) are interred in two tombs that Henry designed and sculpted.
Private air transportation for the town (and for nearby Cannes) is provided by Cannes - Mandelieu Airport. The nearest major airport is Nice Cote d'Azur Airport, the second busiest airport in France; it is about 30 minutes drive from the airport to the town. The commune is reached from exit 41 on the autoroute A8. The town of Mandelieu-la-Napoule is situated on the Cote d'Azur in the Alpes-Maritimes department of France, between Theoule-sur-Mer and Cannes. It is in an attractive location, with the Mediterranean to the front and hills behind the town.
Much the most imposing monument here is the Chateau de Napoule, at the southern end of the beach. Although a small part of the castle (the Saracen Tower) dates back to the 11th century, most of the castle you can see is a 20th century reconstruction of a 14th century castle destroyed during the Revolution. The work was carried out by Henry Clews, an artist who owned the castle and whose work you can still see exhibited inside.
Local markets, a good chance to sample many local products, are held in Mandelieu four times a week - but not always in the same place. Wednesday and Friday mornings the market is in the Place des Combattants in the town centre, thursdays it is in La Napoule at Place Saint-Fainéant, and saturday mornings in Place Jeanne d'Arc in the Capitou region of the town.

Villefranche-sur-Mer is a very picturesque Medieval beach village on the Mediterranean coast just a few km east of Nice. Once a fishing village and deep-water harbor, Villefranche retains its pastel colored buildings and narrow streets, along with long sandy beaches, terrace cafés and restaurants and an active yacht basin.
From the main road above, you can look down across the red tile roofs of the old town, with the distinctive church and bell tower in the center. Like the medieval villages of the back country, the narrow cobblestone and bricked streets slope steeply down (in this case towards the sea) or traverse along the slope, with vaulted passages beneath the houses. There's quite a medieval feeling here, with just the many little restaurants to remind you you're in tourist country. There are also quiet little squares, like the Place Félix Poullan beside the church, and the Place de l'Eglise just below, with a bench circling a beautiful big tree.
The most extreme example we've seen anywhere of a vaulted passage is the Rue Obscura, a street about a block in from the seafront that's completely covered for about half its length. Lighted only by white, wire-gridded lamps in the roof, the obscure street reminds you of the days when the town's population sheltered here from bombardments. Cross streets open out onto the sunny upper village or the even brighter seafront below.
The focal point of Villefranche-sur-Mer is the quai, where a line of terrace café-restaurants face the yacht harbor and out across the blue Mediterranean, backed the lovely village houses. Villefranche was once a fishing village attached to the town of Nice, and you can sometimes see some of the little pointu fishing boats in the harbor. Robert De Niro sat at one of these cafés, as Sam in the movie Ronin (1998), amidst action and car chases across the South of France.
The 16th-century military fortress, Citadelle Saint-Elme, sits at the south edge of Villefranche-sur-Mer, in easy walking distance from the port. The citadel was built in 1557 to protect the this port as well as the towns along this part of the Mediterranean. The fortress worked in conjunction with Fort Mont Alban (on the hilltop between Villefranche-sur-Mer and Nice), a defensive tower at Saint Jean-Cap-Ferrat, and the military battery at Beaulieu-sur-Mer. Citadelle Saint-Elme was occupied by the famous French mountain troups, Chasseurs Alpins until 1958. The site now hosts the Town Hall (Mairie) and some museums. Entry to the site is free, to walk around the fortified interior, visit the museums, and a very nice and shady park.

La Grande-Motte is a commune in the Hérault département in Occitanie in southern France. It is a popular seaside resort and port, built in the 1960s and 1970s. La Grande-Motte is characterized by homogeneous architecture; many of the prominent buildings are pyramidal in form. With 2 million tourists per year it is one of the favorite resorts of the French.
The resort town of La Grande Motte was largely built between 1960 and 1975 on virgin beachfront dunes, and is artificially irrigated to create a green, environment. The architect of the project, Jean Balladur, drew inspiration from pre-Columbian pyramids such as Teotihuacan, Mexico; and from modernist architecture in Brazil, especially the work of architect Oscar Niemeyer. Balladur developed the master plan for the seaside resort on a site of 750 hectares comprising 450 hectares of land and 300 hectares of wetland. The plan included principles for settlement, with guidelines for each plot, including zones for camping, a town centre, a marina, and a city park. The landscaper Pierre Pillet collaborated on the project, selecting plant species that were tolerant of the marine climate. Jean Balladur imagined a green city.
Parking was placed no more than 600 meters away from the beach, to allow visitors to walk there, but keeping all development away from the beach itself. The project incorporated large open spaces surrounding the main buildings. Squares and parks, and sports and leisure services were also planned for the new city. Public and private beaches, the marina and water sports facilities complement the design. The Palais de Congrès (conference centre), a casino and the church of St. Augustine are also key elements.
Established in 1967, the seaside resort of La Grande-Motte boasts a typical modern architecture of this period with its pyramid-shaped buildings. Lined with beautiful beaches of fine sand, the resort also offers to holidaymakers numerous leisure and sports activities.
