Resting on a hill top in Northern India's Indus Valley region is an extraordinary monastery.
Thiksey Monastery is a 12-story building that houses an amazing collection of Buddhist art.
It acquired the nickname, 'Mini Potala', since its architecture bears an uncanny resemblance to Tibet's Potala Palace.
A Buddha Temple, built to venerate the 14th Dalai Lama's visit, is among the main highlights of the temple.
It is said to be among the largest and most elaborate gompas found in the region of Central Ladakh.
This Tibetan Buddhist monastery sits at a height of 3,600 meters and is a jewel in Ladakh's skyline.
Leh and Ladakh - India Travel Guide
Take a tour of Landscape of Leh and Ladakh in India -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
Not many people have heard of the Indian region of Leh and Ladakh, to their loss.
It's an astoundingly beautiful part of the world with a very diverse landscape.
There are high, snowy mountains, rocky hills, scenic waterways, and historic towns.
Some of the towns in this remote part of India are hundreds of years old.
Another important part of Leh and Ladakh are the Buddhist monasteries that are located here.
Many of these monasteries have existed for hundreds of years and have intricate and colorful Buddhist architecture.
The imagery and iconography of many of these temples draw deeply on Indian and Buddhist mythology.
There are also many stupas to visit for those willing to make the hike up the hills.

#Ladakh, #Leh, #KhardunglaPass, #NubraValley, #India: Ladakh Travel Roadtrip Video captures absolutely breathtaking views of Khardungla Pass (Highest Motorable Road at 18380 ft), Nubra Valley, Diskit, Sangam, Hemis & Thiksey Monastery, and incredible journey through highways admist the high altitude mountain desert. The journey is best experienced on a motor bike and riding on these roads is on every biker bucket list. The beauty of this place is unparalleled, awe inspiring, and must be on every global tourist bucket list; still unknown to lot of travellers. May-July is the tourist season, though freezing of Zanskar river in winter attracts global trekkers. The place has been a trade route between Indus Valley, Tibet through high passes through centuries. Leh for me ranks at the very top and a must visit destination.

Leh was the capital of the Himalayan kingdom of Ladakh, now the Leh district in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. Leh is at an altitude of 3524 metres (11,562 ft), and connects via National Highway 1D to Srinagar in the southwest and to Manali in the south via the Leh-Manali Highway. Leh was an important stopover on trade routes along the Indus Valley between Tibet to the east, Kashmir to the west and also between India and China for centuries. The main goods carried were salt, grain, pashm or cashmere wool, charas or cannabis resin from the Tarim Basin, indigo, silk yarn and Banaras brocade.
North India: Ladakh #3 (Sham Area - NW Ladakh - Lamanyuru, the Dha Hanu Valley and Thiksey)
Normally we never travel to India in June. Much too warm. But this trip is a real trip to the Himalayas/Ladakh. The passes to Ladakh are often closed till late May - early June en open till September - October. So the timeslot in which you can travel by car to Ladakh is June-July-August. From Delhi and the famous Hindu pilgrimage city Haridwar on the Ganges, we will travel to the residence of the Dalai Lama (Dharamsala) and the hippie haven Manali. From Manali we will travel over land to Leh, Ladakh. Along the way we will cross the second highest mountain pass for cars in the world.
In Ladakh we stay some days in Leh and we make a tour in the Sham Area. We visit Lamayuru monastery, beautifully located deep in the mountains, the Dards of Dah Hanu, the three most beautiful monasteries in the Indus Valley (Thiksey, Takthok and Hermis), Tsho Moriri, a turquoise blue lake at 4530m altitude at the centre of the nomads area, Tsokar lake and Korzok.
We travel to Leh over land because it is the best way to slowly get used to the altitude, and the best way to see the ever changing landscapes.
Part 3:
Part three brings the three-day-Sham Tour. We drive from Leh to Lamayuru. It is a journey through a desolate mountain scenery. Imagine yourself on the Moon. In Lamayuru (3470 m) is the oldest monastery of Ladakh. The monastery is one of the most beautiful places we've ever visited. Breathtaking . From Lamayuru we make a trip over the Fotula pass (4100 m) and the Hanu valley waarwe a village of Dokpa 's visit. A unique population with a particular costume. The women wear a headdress with flowers. Back in Leh we visit the 14th-century monastery Tiksey (3280 m: 17 km from Leh) of the Gelukpa schoo.

I'd like to show you the world's most remote monasteries.
In the Trabzon region of Turkey lies the archaic and secluded Sumela Monastery. It stands on rather unusual grounds, having been built into a rocky cliff. Inside the monastery are several noteworthy places, including a library, the Rock Church, and a spring venerated by the Greek Orthodox religion.
Among the most awe inspiring treasured sites amidst the green of western Bhutan's mountains is the Tiger's Nest Monastery. A cultural symbol of Bhutan, this Buddhist temple has a 1200 year history and a rich sense of art, religion, and culture. Today, it continues its illustrious beginnings by still serving as a monastery. The monastery is built around a cave where an ancient guru once meditated.
Built into the sheer rocky cliff face in Montenegro is the Serb Orthodox Church, Orstrog Monastery. This sacred structure is Montenegro's primary pilgrimage site, and is dedicated to Saint Basel of Ostrog. The immaculate white wash which covers part of this edifice creates clean lines and stands out brilliant against the gray-red rock.
Resting at a height of 3,600 meters, Thiksey Monastery, graces Northern India's Indus Valley region. It is an elaborate 12-story building, which sits magnanimously on a hill top in Ladakh and is also called ''Mini Potala due to its close resemblance to Potala Palace. It has been especially acclaimed for its intricate and rich collection of Buddhist art.
Set against the stunning backdrop of trenchant mountains is the mystical Tatev Monastery. Bearing a magical ambiance of pure divinity, this monastery has blessed the Armenian lands since the 9th century. After the region's best school was built here in the 10th century, Tatev Monastery became a focal point for scholars and the arts.
