I visited Nagaland in the month of April and had the opportunity to open my mind to endless experiences! For the longest time, Nagaland and the whole of North East has been so neglected: tourism wise and also culturally :(. So I took the plunge to discover the beautiful state myself, with two other creators- Tanya Khanijow & Namrata Menon. These girls have been the most lovely to travel with :)

Matchlock a showpiece of Konyak tribe
Muzzle loading gun or bharua and gongs displayed at Konyak morung during the Hornbill Festival, Nagaland. Not a Matchlock!
We thank our viewer diasirea for pointing out Not a matchlock, it is a breech loading conversion of some type of muzzle loader. Clearly you can see a breech block and hinge mechanism. A matchlock would need a serpentine cord.
A bharua is so called as one fills (or bharo's) in gun powder and projectiles directly into the barrel from the front!
The Konyak are a Naga people, and are recognised among other Naga by their tattoos, which they have all over their face and hands. They are called the land of Angh's. They have the largest population among the Nagas.
The Konyaks can be found in Myanmar, in the Tirap and Changlang districts of Arunachal, and in the Mon district of Nagaland, India. They are known in Arunachal as Wancho Konyak.
The Konyak language belongs to the Northern Naga subbranch of the Sal subfamily of Sino-Tibetan.
Known as head hunters of North East India. In recent past they were known as war loving and often attack nearby villages of other tribes and with their skill they used to cut head of the opponent warriors and hang them in the Morong (A public House). The number of head indicates the power of concerned person and later becomes the village head. Though except these cruel behaviors, among them they show very disciplined public life where duty of every individuals is very strict.
Nagaland, 'The Land of Festivals' and the warm naga people, lies in the North Eastern part of India. Historically, the Nagas are known as headhunters and have always been brave warriors.
Sometimes Nagaland is also referred to as The Switzerland of the East. The region is primarily hilly and has a pleasant climate all through the year. It is perhaps the best place for the adventurous at heart and makes an ideal place for trekking and camping.
The area is also known as paradise on earth. The Dzukou Valley is the most famed valley of Nagaland and the natural beauty of the area is absolutely captivating.
Another attraction for tourists is the Kohima War Cemetery. The cemetery is a tribute to the soldiers who laid down their lives pushing back the Japanese army during World War II. The bodies of approxiamately 1,100 British and 330 Indian soldiers are buried here.
One of the biggest cathedrals of North East India is located at Aradura Hill in Kohima. Its magnificent architecture makes it an important landmark of Kohima.
The Hornbill Festival is named after the Hornbill, a large, magnificent forest bird.
Held every year at the Naga Heritage Village in Kisama about 12 kms from Kohima, the festival is held over a period of 10 days annually. The entire Heritage Village was built for the sole purpose of hosting this festival and the16 tribes of Nagaland each have their own representative hut in the village. Organized by the Govt. of Nagaland, the festival showcases the entire spectrum of the rich culture of the various naga tribes.
The Hornbill festival was created to bring together the various tribes of the State to display their culture and tradition in the form of dances, songs, sports, foods and many other colourful events. People from within India as well as foreign visitors experience and witness the colourful festival with great enthusiasm.
Delicious, mouth-watering and typically Naga food from the different tribes is served in huts or morungs. Each Morung also has its own restaurant, which serves a specific tribal delicacy. Rice beer is always in great demand and tourists don't mind standing in long serpentine queues for a taste of the same.

Mayodia Pass is located about 56 km away from Roing in Arunachal Pradesh, at the Indo-China border above 2,655 m above sea level. Mayodia got its name from a Nepali girl, Maya, who vanished in the snow and could not be traced.
The place holds enormous travel opportunities and it will definitely turn into a popular travel destination in the coming days. Due to lack of proper transportation facilities, the place lacked exposure but the establishment of the Dhola-Sadiya Bridge over the Brahmaputra this year attracted a lot of travellers to this splendidly beautiful snow covered place.

Arunachal Pradesh's wildest river, Lohit
Soothing views of the Lohit river in Arunachal Pradesh.
Don't be fooled by its calm appearance, Lohit river is the wildest gushing river of the entire district, often showing its temper and power through its brutal current and stream.
It originates from the Tirap Phasi Ranges located in the Eastern Tibet and then enters India via Kibithu – a small town lying at the border post.
Before merging into Brahmaputra River in Assam travels for about two hundred kilometers through the red laterite soils of the Lohit Basin, therefore, it is given the name “the river of blood”. Uncontrolled and turbulent Lohit River flows through the Mishmi Hills, to meet the Siang at the head of the Brahmaputra valley.
This river is getting quite famous and it plays quite a significant role in socioeconomic aspects of the state. It largely contributes towards the drinking water supply, agriculture and energy needs of Arunachal Pradesh. Plus, Lohit carries out various water sports adventures like rafting and kayaking.

Overview of Itanagar town. You can see hoarding and boards of Oppo camera phone, Nikon, P.K. Commercial etc. ATM of Bank of Baroda is also located in the heart of town, one can withdraw cash anywhere.
For transportation from Itanagar to anywhere in Arunachal you can hire taxis. Taxi service in Arunachal is more expensive than any other state in India and auto rickshaws can be hired to commute locally.

Yingkiong town in Upper Siang District of Arunachal Pradesh
Yingkiong city in Upper Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh. Yingkiong is the administrative headquarters of Upper Siang District situated on the bank of Simang river, a tributary to Siang river. One can see the school playground of the town. See the PWD office building, administrative block and government circuit house. Yingkiong city is surrounded by lush green Himalaya. See the clouds moving up the hills.

Dong Valley, First Sunlight in India
Dong Valley in Arunachal Pradesh receives the first sunlight in India, A day long bike ride from tinsukia and a couple of hours of trekking leads you to this amazing place situated in the Eastern most part of India, a few kms from walong is kibithu or kibithoo which is the last frontier. kahoo village is the last village on Indian soil and is just few km from the Chinese border
