OK County 66
Do you know you don't have to drive all of RT 66 to see the many roadside attractions? There's a man over in Arcadia that has a condensed version for you. Where he came up with the idea for this place, we'll never know... but we are certainly glad he did!
Located on RT 66 in Arcadia
If the gates opened, he's opened for business, but it's best to call before making the trip.
My Walk along Te-lah-nay's Wall
The Indian Removal Act was signed into law in 1830 by President Andrew Jackson, and thus began the forced migration of most Native Americans from the southeastern United States to Oklahoma. Among the thousands who were made to leave their land and homes was a teen-aged girl named…Te-lah-nay.
She went, but after only one winter in Oklahoma, Te-lah-nay slipped away and began the long walk back to the Tennessee River Valley that she loved. It took her five years to complete the journey, and it drained the life out of her; she died while still a young woman.
About a century and a half later, Te-lah-nay’s great, great, grandson started building a memorial to her, and to the thousands of other Native Americans who were forced to walk what the Cherokees call “The Trail of Tears.” Over the next 30 plus years, Tom Hendrix moved eight and a half million pounds of stones and built the largest dry-stacked wall in North America. It is over a mile long, varies from about four feet to six feet high, and in some places is more than 10 feet thick. Hendrix hauled every stone in one of the three pick-up trucks he wore out during the process, and he lovingly placed every stone in the wall by hand.
Tom Hendrix died in 2017, but he left behind a legacy that few will match: Te-lah-nay’s wall. It’s in north Alabama near Florence, and of course the best way to experience it is in person. But for those of you who haven’t yet been there, or perhaps have been there, and would like to be reminded of what a special place it is, I have put together the following video. It’s a poor representation of the real thing, but I hope you enjoy my walk along Te-lah-nay’s wall.
Flying Over Durant, Oklahoma
Video footage taken by an aerial drone flying over Durant, Oklahoma.
The video begins with the drone over the intersection of Evergreen and N. 11th Ave. It flies west, over the First United Bank building, to 16th Ave. It then turns around and flies east, back over the First United Bank building. It continues east to the court house, where it flies over the jail, turns around and begins a decent over 5th Ave.
The video picks back up with the drone flying north over Beech Street, between 4th and 5th Avenues. The old Durant Middle School building is in the lower left corner of the screen. It continues flying north, over the University and to the Timber Ridge Apartments. It then turns around and flies back to the court house.
