Tomar, Portugal is one of our favorite cities in Portugal. Actually a top 10 on our list. Here is a little advice on what to see and how to get there from Lisbon.
1. Convento do Cristo: UNESCO World Heritage site with one of the most beautiful chapels in the world. It is circular (16 sides actually) and allowed for knights to ride their horses up to mass. It was used by the Knights Templar from the 12h to the 16th century. The chapel inside is amazing. We even have a couple extra videos to show you its magnificance.
2. Igreja de Sao Joao Baptista: John the Baptist Church is the one you see on the video. It is on Praca da Republica.
3. Museo dos Fosforos: The Match Museum. Why not see the largest collection of matches in Europe. Just please don't smoke inside :)
4. The Festa dos Tabuleiros: This festival held every four years sees virgin girls dressed in white balancing huge trays on their heads being helped by non-required to be virgin men helping out. Great to see in person if you are there.

The Convent of Christ (Portuguese: Convento de Cristo/Mosteiro de Cristo) is a former Roman Catholic convent in Tomar, Portugal. Originally a 12th-century Templar stronghold, when the order was dissolved in the 14th century the Portuguese branch was turned into the Knights of the Order of Christ, that later supported Portugal's maritime discoveries of the 15th century. The convent and castle complex is a historic and cultural monument and was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1983

In this clip, I marvel happily about “discovering” something new — after all these years of travel.
It’s Day 56 of my 100-day trip to Europe, and I’m in Tomar, a delightful town in central Portugal with little tourism and an amazing history. It’s the hometown of our tour guide, Fatima, who was excited to splice a visit here into our regular itinerary. And I’m so impressed, I’m adding it to the next edition of our Rick Steves Portugal guidebook:
Towering above this charming, workaday town is a castle with an Oz-like circular church (or “oratory”) built 800 years ago by the Knights Templar. The church (modeled after the Dome of the Rock or the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem) is where knights would go, often on horseback, to be blessed before battle as they defended Portugal against the Moors, protected pilgrims heading for the Holy Land, or just empowered Portugal in the age of discovery. After the Order of the Knights Templar was dissolved across Europe in 1312, the Order in Portugal simply morphed into the Order of Christ and carried on. Henry the Navigator was a Grand Master, and later, King Manuel (who became a Grand Master in 1484) ordered much building here. Under his leadership, the stout early-medieval castle was decorated in exquisite Manueline decor.
The Knights Templar was a rich organization. It was both a popular Christian charity and Europe’s first great bank — pilgrims gave money in the west, were given a “check,” and could make withdrawals along the way as they ventured east. If they died, which was common, the Templars kept their estate. (Always read the fine print!) The Templars — you could call them the first multinational corporation — built and managed about a thousand forts, stretching from Portugal all the way to Jerusalem.
To gape up at the majesty of the Templars’ church here in Tomar has been a highlight for me on my Rick Steves Heart of Portugal tour...and I hope we’ll find a way to make it a standard stop for future groups as well.

Lisbon was the final stop of our European tour and we couldn't have chosen a better destination. The city immediately won us over with it's cheery pastel buildings, delicious fresh seafood, and it's unique mix of attractions. It also didn't hurt that we had clear blue skies the whole week we were there! Our first stop of the day was Sao Jorge Castle, which is an old Moorish fortification that sits on a hill overlooking Lisbon and the Tagus River. You can get some nice panoramic views of the city from here, and they also have peacocks roaming the grounds.
Miradouro das Portas do Sol is one of the many look out points in Lisbon that offers postcard-perfect views of the city. This particular terrace overlooks the Alfama district and it is always popular with tourists.
Carmo is a mediaeval convent that was ruined during the 1755 earthquake, and today it is used as an archaeological museum. It's a strange feeling walking down the ruined nave of the church and seeing blue skies above your head, but that's exactly what makes it worth a visit.
Another place to visit is Belem Tower. The tower was built on the banks of the Tagus River, and it was meant to act as both a defense system and a ceremonial gateway into Lisbon.
The Jeronimos Monastery is one of the most visited sights in Lisbon. It's one of the best examples of Late Gothic Manueline architecture, so have a close look at the intricate detailing when you visit.
A fun way to get around Lisbon's hilly streets is by riding the trams. There are different lines across the city, but #28 is the most popular one with visitors.
The Santa Justa lift is an elevator that connects the lower streets of Baixa with Carmo Square, and it is the only remaining vertical elevator in Lisbon. Though it is meant to serve a functional role, it is also quite popular with visitors who find the elevator a novel idea.
