Between the blue of the sea and the green of the hills lies Castiglione della Pescaia. The town, a renowned seaside resort, is known for its beautiful beaches and extensive pine groves that stretch as far as Marina di Grosseto, ending in the charming Pineta del Tombolo.
Perched on a spur of Monte Petriccio, the medieval town is protected by remarkable walls with plenty of towers, gates and a 15th-century castle. Centuries past to the east of the tower there once stood Lake Prile, and next to the water an Etruscan settlement, which became Portus Traianus in Roman times. With the passing of the centuries, the lake dried up and the vast swampland that formed there was reclaimed thanks to work commissioned by the Grand Duke of Tuscany Leopoldo. In the place of the ancient lake now there stands the Diaccia Botrona nature reserve, regarded as the most important wetland in Italy and acknowledged as an area of international importance for the rare ecosystem sited there.
Castiglione della Pescaia is an old fishermen’s village, whose picturesque harbour is still the mooring place for sailor every night with their vibrant catch, making way for the countless yachts that cast anchor in this sought-after resort. The town is nestled in greenery, home to many animals. The bird life here is particularly interesting, as too is the rich and variegated flora. The Castiglione della Pescaia area is perfect for long walks, horse and bike rides, all of which benefit from the trails and roads that head deep into moss and pinewoods. The seawater is a balm to the senses and the long stretches of fine, light sandy beaches extend to the edge of the pine groves. Sun worshippers and sport lovers love the sailing and the refreshing seaside lifestyle at Castiglione della Pescaia. The beaches, even the most isolated ones, provide the perfect getaway from the noise and crowds at other bathing establishments along the Tuscan coast.
While you are in the vicinity, check out the surrounding area, such as Vetulonia, one of the most important Etruscan settlements, whose burial ground and archaeological museum are worth visiting. Venture to Tirli, a town that relates how life in the Maremma used to be, famous for its authentic rustic food. Then there’s Buriano, with its medieval castle and stunning views over the Maremma. Lastly, 15 kilometres from Castiglione della Pescaia stands Punta Ala, the famous luxury tourist destination, known for its harbour and decked out with some of the most state-of-the-art equipment in the whole of the Mediterranean.
The flatlands connecting Castiglione della Pescaia and Grosseto were a salt water lake (lago Prile) during Etruscan reign, which slowly turned into marshlands. The Romans kept draining the area until nature had the better of everybody in the Middle Ages. The evolution of the marshlands can be studied at CASA XIMENES (also known as Casa Rossa, the red house), which provides guided visits by boats through the Diaccia Botrona nature reserve and walks for nature lovers (in summer only in the late afternoon, ask for timing at the tourist office). The best time for birdwatching is from October to spring, but flamingo colonies live in the reserve all through the year.

Centro del subappennino marchigiano (AP), il cui territorio è posto interamente tra le valli del fiume Tesino (a nord) e del fiume Tronto (a sud). Il centro abitato deve la sua pianta irregolare allo sperone roccioso sul quale sorge, ritagliato dai due rami sorgentizi del torrente Lama, affluente di sinistra del Tronto.
Le origini di Offida sono certamente antichissime, ma è tuttora controverso se siano da far risalire al periodo della dominazione Longobarda nel Piceno (VI sec. d.C.) o se, come vuole la tradizione, siano da ricollegare ai Pelasgi, un popolo originario dell'Asia Minore, venuto dal mare.
Questi raffiguravano il loro Dio con le sembianze di un serpente ed è probabile che il nome della città derivi proprio da questo (serpente = ophis).
Ai Pelasgi seguirono quasi sicuramente gli Etruschi e, tra il IX e il XI sec. a.C., i Piceni. Offida, che oggi rappresenta un vero e proprio gioiello
nel panorama dei piccoli centri storici dell'Italia centrale può considerarsi a ragione, uno dei luoghi più significativi dell'intera civiltà Picena.
Il centro storico è racchiuso all'interno delle Mura Castellane risalenti al secolo XII. Altro importante monumento della cittadina è rappresentato dal Palazzo Comunale, costruzione risalente al XI-XII, all'interno del quale si trova il Teatro Serpente Aureo.
Il principale monumento è rappresentato dalla chiesa di Santa Maria della Rocca, ricostruita nel 1330 su una chiesina del XI.
Nell'itinerario turistico non possono essere dimenticate: la Chiesa della Collegiata, la Chiesa dell'Addolorata dove è custodita la Bara del Cristo Morto, la Chiesa di S. Agostino, con l'annessa Cappella del Miracolo Eucaristico.
Storia del merletto a tombolo offidano
Fattori diversi contribuiscono a creare la storia, la civiltà, l'orientamento artistico di una città, tra essi sono da annoverare, in Offida, la lavorazione e il commercio del merletto a tombolo. I merletti offidani più antichi che si conoscono sono quelli risalenti al '400 che erano i camici di S. Giovanni da Capistrano e di S. Giacomo della Marca, conservati dai monaci di Monteprandone (A.P.) Il tombolo si inserì, facilmente, su una produzione locale di passamaneria, nel 1400 circa, ad opera di dame o nobildonne.
Agli inizi del 1600 la lavorazione e produzione locale del merletto erano rinomate per qualità e raffinatezza, tanto che il manufatto era ricercato ed esportato dai mercanti col nome di provenienza, come appare in un contratto di compravendita del 24/06/1612, ove sono indicati
25 merletti di Ofida, valutati 30 bolognini e 80 zagari di Ofida .
Nel 1728, con una petizione al papa Benedetto XIII, la comunità locale chiedeva protezione e provvedimenti contro i mercanti che commerciavano i merletti di Chioggia. Con l'incremento turistico della riviera adriatica, verificatosi dopo la fine degli eventi bellici '39 - '45, si determinò una notevole richiesta che portò a miglioramenti
tecnici e ad aumenti di introiti. Ancora oggi l'arte del merletto a tombolo si trasmette da madre in figlia e la tradizione continua perché essa è viva nell'animo delle offidane che sono fiere di sentirsi artiste.
A Ufid s' spènn puóch e s' magn' bè Con questo detto si cercava di ironizzare, da parte dei cittadini dei paesi limitrofi, sul fatto che, anticamente, gli offidani usavano consumare con una certa frequenza carne di pecora. Tale detto, però, possiamo dire che calza bene, per quanto riguarda la gastronomia offidana perchè realmente in Offida si spende poco e si mangia bene. Le specialità sono quelle della genuina cucina marchigiana che vanno dai maccheroncini con fegatini alle lasagne, dai fagioli con le cotiche agli arrosti misti, al baccalà con patate, allo stoccafisso con salsa piccante. Specialità locale è il CHICHIRIPIENO . Fra i dolci troviamo il FUNGHETTO .
Oltre alle specialità gastronomiche Offida è anche la culla di buoni vini con diversi D.O.C
Birdwatching at the Orbetello Lagoon, Italy

Orbetello is a town that stands on a peninsula. To the west is Monte Argentario which rises to 1,200 metres and which used to be an island until joined to the mainland by two tombolos - sand spits which are created through the action of the waves and nearby rivers. The joining of the mountain island with the mainland by these two tombolos formed a lagoon which has an average depth of one metre and is nowhere deeper than two metres. This has created a haven for wildlife and part of which is now a WWF reserve.
The lagoon was later divided into two with the construction of a causeway from Ortebello to Monte Argentario.
There are signs warning that wild camping is forbidden. No campsites were open during my visit but there are many of them which are mainly open from April to October.
I visited it on Christmas Day 2014. I was extremely fortunate that arriving at the same time was a family from Sweden and the gentleman was a keen ornithologist and knew far more than I. My aim had been to see the flamingos and spoonbills and thanks to his sharp eye and excellent equipment that was possible. From talking to the locals, I learned that one would normally see these birds after treking through the northern tombolo.
My film and photographs, show the birds at extreme range, my optical zoom is only seventeen times and from there the digital zoom takes over. In this case what we see of the birds, in particular the flamingos and spoonbills, is at around fifty times magnification.
Other wildlife seen that day includes an otter, eared grebes, black winged stilts, herons, cormorants, marsh harriers, kestrels, shovellers, shelducks and more.
It is very difficult to find the sanctuary, the coordinates placed here on the map are correct - use it if you intend to visit! Whilst travelling south in the direction of Ortebello, you need to turn off at Via del Ceriolo and follow this to the end. This will bring you to the sanctuary.
At the end of the day, I was able to capture some film of the sun going down.
