Castell Coch, The Fairy Tale Castle Near Cardiff - Places To See In Wales Ep 4
Castell Coch (The Red Castle) is a fairy tale, gothic revival castle that is not as old as it looks. Just 6 miles north of Cardiff and visible as you past J32 of the M4 is a 19th century castle designed by William Burges for the 3rd Marquess of Bute.
The Marquess was one of the richest men in Britain during the 1800’s.
The castle sits on ruins of a Norman Castle but the current castle was built between 1875 and 1879. Once completed, the castle wasn’t really used and the Marquess rarely visited.
The castle is now governed by CADW, an agency of the Welsh Government. It is open all year, from 9.30 to 5pm during the summer months, slightly shorter hours in the winter. At the time of visiting the entry price is £7.30 for an adult with discounts for OAP’s and there are family tickets available.
As with other CADW properties and castles, drones are not allowed. #VisitWales #CastleCoch
