Places to see in ( Bracciano - Italy )
Bracciano is a small town in the Italian region of Lazio, 30 kilometres northwest of Rome. The town is famous for its volcanic lake and for a particularly well-preserved medieval castle Castello Orsini-Odescalchi. The lake is widely used for sailing and is popular with tourists; the castle has hosted a number of events, especially weddings of actors and singers. The town is served by an urban railway (Line FR3) which connects it with Rome (stations of Ostiense and Valle Aurelia) in about 55 minutes. Close to it lie the two medieval towns of Anguillara Sabazia and Trevignano Romano.
There is no certain information about the origins of Bracciano, on the Via Cassia overlooking the lake. It probably rose from one of the numerous towers built in the tenth century as a defence against the Saracen attacks, as implied by the ancient name of Castrum Brachiani. In the eleventh century the neighbouring territory was acquired by the Prefetti di Vico family, who turned the tower into a castle. Ferdinand Gregorovius dated the possession of Bracciano by the Orsini to 1234. The area was later acquired by the Roman hospital of Santo Spirito in Sassia and, from 1375, was a Papal possession.
In 1419 the Colonna Pope Martin V confirmed the fief of Bracciano in the Orsini family branch of Tagliacozzo. Under this powerful family the city developed into a flourishing town, famous in the whole of Italy for its castle, which was enlarged, starting from 1470, by Napoleone Orsini and his son Virginio. In 1481 it housed Pope Sixtus IV, who had fled from the plague in Rome; the Sala Papalina in one of the corner towers commemorates the event. Four years later, however, the city and the castle were ravaged by Papal troops under Prospero Colonna, and subsequently a new line of walls was built.
The main monument of Bracciano is its castle, Castello Orsini-Odescalchi, one of the most noteworthy examples of Renaissance military architecture in Italy. 3 km (2 mi) outside the city, alongside the road leading to Trevignano Romano, is the ancient church of San Liberato (ninth century). It occupies what was once the Roman settlement of Forum Clodii, now surrounded by an herb garden, part of the complex of English-style gardens at the adjoining Villa San Librato, designed by Russell Page in 1965 for the art historian conte Donato Sanminatelli and his contessa, Maria Odescalchi, and carried out over the following decade.
On the same road are the ruins of the Aquae Apollinaris, a complex of baths famous in the Roman age. At Vigna di Valle, next to the lake, the former seaplane base today houses the Italian Air Force Museum. The museum's four hangars hold a number of historical military aircraft, including famous planes such as the MC. 202, the Supermarine Spitfire, the Savoia Marchetti S.79, the F-104 Starfighter, the Caproni Ca.100 and the Panavia Tornado. Also on view is a remarkable collection of three Schneider Cup racers, including the Macchi M.C.72. The museum stages an annual 'Giornata Azzura' airshow at Pratica di Mare airport.

Lake Bracciano - Italy
Lake Bracciano is a lake of volcanic origin in the Italian region of Lazio, 32 km (20 mi) northwest of Rome. It is the second largest lake in the region (second only to Lake Bolsena) and one of the major lakes of Italy. It has a circular perimeter of approximately 32 km (20 mi).
The lake owes its origin to intense volcanic activity from 600,000 to 40,000 years before present, which created many small volcanoes in the Sabatino territory. The main magma chamber was situated under the present lake of Bracciano. Its collapse created the caldera now occupied by the lake, which is a crater lake. Some small craters are still recognisable around the lake and in the immediate vicinity.
Three towns border the lake, Bracciano, Anguillara Sabazia and Trevignano Romano.
The lake is an important tourist attraction situated near Rome. As it serves as a drinking water reservoir for the city of Rome it has been under control since 1986 in order to avoid pollution of its waters. The use of motorboats is strictly forbidden (exceptions being made for a few professional fisherman and the authorities), and a centralised sewer system has been built for all the bordering towns in order to avoid any spoiling of the water quality. This makes Bracciano one of the cleanest lakes of Italy. The absence of motorized navigation (apart from police boats) favours sailing and canoeing. It also is good for swimming, except for the fact that there is a type of parasitical fluke in the lake, commonly known as swimmer's itch[citation needed].
In the last few years the lake and its surroundings have been brought under further protection by the creation of a regional park, the Parco Regionale del complesso lacuale di Bracciano Martignano. ( source Wikipedia )

Solo Trip to Europe | Day 6 Rome | Places to visit in Rome
Day 6.. Rome it is...
1. Visit the monuments
There’s no doubt about it. The first thing anyone thinks about when they visit Rome for the first time are the infinite number of historical monuments and places you will have to visit in the time you have available. It’s not always easy, and often not possible because Rome truly has something special in every hidden corner. Besides trademark monuments such as theColosseum, St Peter’s Basilica, the Spanish Steps and much more, walk onto any of the beautiful piazzas and you will walk right into a Bernini fountain or an ancient obelisk. Make sure you stop by the Trevi Fountain and wish for your next trip to Rome because, trust me, you will need it!
2. Eat gelato
Come rain or shine, there’s always time during the day for a quick gelato pit stop, or two, or three! Walk around the city and you are guaranteed to come across one of the best gelato shops in the city. But beware of the tourist traps. Make sure you know your real gelato from the fake stuff. You’ll be glad you read that part of your guide book when you take the first bite of your true Italian gelato. Or try one of Rome tours! wonderful tour guides are experts on the matter.
3. Take a walk in the park
The city of Rome has a lot to offer, but don’t forget about it’s gorgeous parks. Rome’s most famous park, Villa Borghese, is found right in the center of the city. Above piazza del Popolo and all the way across historical center, the park is home to a world of people having picnics on the grass and around the ponds, rollerblading or cycling along the roads, and enjoying the beautiful Roman weather simply strolling along the footpaths. Don’t forget to walk out to the Pincho panoramic balcony, overlooking all of the historical center of Rome. One of the biggest parks in Rome is Villa Ada. This is the richest park in terms of fauna. Not only does it house a number of different types of trees and plants, but it also offers a skating rink and areas with outdoor exercise equipment. This is one of the most loved areas by Romans.
4. Have lunch/dinner at a Roman Osteria
When in Rome, eat like the Romans do! Wander into some of the picturesque side streets and you will certainly come across a cozy, welcoming Roman Osteria or Trattoria. These are typically the most informal among the classifications of restaurants. They are often family run and have been around for generations. You will usually notice these places from the loud voices coming from inside, with friendly Italian waiters weaving through the tables with more wine. The food is traditional, hearty Italian and possibly the best you will find in the city. Try Da Enzo al 29 in the Trastevere neighborhood, or Flavio al Velavevodetto in Testaccio.
5. Take a day trip
The center of Rome is certainly breathtaking and has plenty to offer, but everything surrounding Rome is equally stunning. Try heading out in any direction and you’ll run into a picturesque medieval town. North of Rome you’ll find Lake Bracciano, surrounded by three towns (Bracciano, Trevignano and Anguillara). East is Tivoli and its famous thermal spa. Finally, to the South you will find the Castelli Romani, composed of a number of beautiful towns, each with its own special feature. If you want to head west you will drive straight toward the Roman coast. Choose one of the many beaches filled with music and fun!
