Near to Vienna is a place where the sky meets with the earth. For almost nine hundred years the Stift Klosterneuburg Monastery has had a special relationship in the spiritual, sacred and cultural life of Austria. Its architecture dates back to the Baroque era and the rule of Emperor Karl The Sixth.In the twelfth century, church architecture was based upon Italian design. At that time a castle was also built at this location for the sponsor of the monastery, Leopold The Pious. In addition to its fine sacred architecture the Stift Klosterneuburg enchants due to its worldly side that can b`e seen in the emperor’s private rooms which demonstrate the luxurious lifestyle of the Habsburgers whose influence was at its zenith during the reign of Karl The Sixth. The monastery’s most valuable possession and also one of the most impressive works of art of the Middle Ages is the Verduner Altar that was named after the artist, Nikolaus Of Verdun, and was completed in 1181. Mariazell & St. Pölten - in beautiful AUSTRIA

Of the myriad of day trip possibilities (or overnight) from Vienna, one of the best is to head into the picturesque Alps and visit the charming mountain shrine town and ski resort of Mariazell. Mariazell is splendidly situated in the eastern Alps of Austria, right across the border of Lower Austria in the province of Steirmark (Styria). It is Central Europe's most revered religious destination for its famous shrine and basilica. Yet it also is a top-notch ski resort in winter. Of course Alpine hiking and biking can be undertaken through much of the year. And there is always local beer and other specialties.
To get there, one travels to the lovely capital city of Lower Austria - St. Pölten - on a choice of trains from Vienna's Westbahnhof. In St. Pölten, one changes to the classic narrow gauge mountain railway called the Mariazellerbahn. This is still a working train route, operating several times daily, every day of the year. The trains are very old and proceed slowly but they carry you through some gorgeous valley and mountain scenery. It is not a tourist train; it's a real train operated by Austrian National Railways.
And if you have time, why not make a stop in St. Pölten. Its maze of pedestrian streets and plazas in the old town, complemented by some striking modern architecture in the government quarter make for a pleasant stroll.
So sit back and breathe in the mountain air while you travel to Mariazell, listening to Josef Haydn's Emperor Quartet. This music by Haydn is a set of variations based on the Imperial Austrian Anthem that he had earlier composed to rally the peoples of the Austrian Empire and to honor the Habsburgs in their heroic battles against the forces of Napoleon. See this beautiful old town along the Danube river near Krems in Austria. Tourist attractions: Kremser Tower built by the year 1470 transformed in Baroque style in the 17th century. Gottweiger hof, an old Abbey complex built in 1286 with a Baroque chapel. Walking all around and enjoy the other old houses and churches.

Charming and Adorable Medieval Krems, Austria
There is a Viking included tour to Gottweig Abbey but we said, nay and concentrated on adorable Krems. Lower Stein and Upper Krems together are Krems and is loaded to the brim with little medieval houses, remaining gates, etc.

Krems und Stein, Wachau - Austria HD Travel Channel
Krems on the Danube impresses with its well-preserved old town, located directly on the banks of the Danube. The Pulverturm (magazine) is reminiscent of the Swedish sieges where Krems was hard-fought. The town is characterized by the surrounding vineyards, which also influence the cultural landscape of the town.
The Weinstadt Museum (City and Wine Museum), where cannonballs from the Swedish sieges still stuck in the walls, houses one of the oldest human sculpture, the 32,000 year old Venus of Galgenberg, discovered near the village of Stratzing. Only in 2006 it may be evidenced that it has already been made by Homo sapiens and not by Homo neanderthalensis who still lived at the same time. In the same year two infant graves were found here. One with twins, which were covered with the shoulder blade of a mammoth. The 27,000 years old grave is the oldest burial place in Austria.
The end of the pedestrian zone forms the well-restored gate, the Steiner Tor, the landmark of Krems.
The attraction in the summer is the apricot festival in the Wachau with its peak in Spitz. All kinds of products from apricots are offered. Apricot brandy, apricot jam, apricot stuffed pancakes and of course apricot dumplings. However, if you enjoy these delicacies frequently, do not be surprised about a few extra pounds on the scale after your holidays. You should not miss visiting the famous Heurigen, wine-taverns in which wine-growers serve the most recent year's wines. Some of them offer an excellent cuisine accompanied by fine wines. In the evening, one can let it the views of the Danube valley soak in.
The towns of Krems and Stein developed independently for a long time. Between the two towns lies Kloster Und, a former Capuchin Convent.
The old town of Stein has a special flair. It was here where the most famous Kremser artist Martin Johann Schmidt, called Kremser Schmidt, lived for decades. He was known for his folk baroque style. You can see at one of his altarpieces and the ceiling fresco in the parish church.
The town hall square is edged by the magnificent Renaissance building of the toll house and the Mazzettihaus, a baroque palace, the birthplace of Ludwig von Kochel. Ludwig von Kochel is a known Mozart scholar; the Köchel catalogue as named after him. Furthermore, you see the Passauerhof, which was already mentioned as a Tithe yard of the Bishop of Passau in 1263.

Krems an der Donau besticht durch seine gut erhaltene, direkt an der Donau gelegene Altstadt am Donauufer. Der Pulverturm erinnert an die Schwedenkriege, in denen Krems hart umkämpft wurde. Die Stadt wird geprägt von den umliegenden Weinbergen, die auch die Kulturlandschaft der Stadt beeinflussen.
Das Weinstadtmuseum, in dessen Mauern noch Kanonenkugeln aus den Schwedenkriegen stecken, beherbergt eine der ältesten menschlichen Plastik, die 32.000 Jahre alte Venus vom Galgenberg bei Stratzing. Die Attraktion im Sommer ist das Marillenfest in der Wachau mit seinem Höhepunkt in Spitz an der Donau. Alle Arten von Produkten aus Marillen werden angeboten.
Marillenschnaps, Marillenmarmelade, Marillenpalatschinken und natürlich Marillenknödel. Allerdings sollte man sich bei häufigem Genuss dieser Köstlichkeit nach dem Urlaub nicht über ein paar Pfunde mehr auf der Waage wundern. Beim Heurigen, der neben erlesenem Wein, oft eine Edelküche anbietet, kann man in den Abendstunden den Ausblick auf das Donautal auf sich wirken lassen.
Krems und Stein waren lange Zeit zwei Städte, die sich unabhängig voneinander entwickelten. Zwischen beiden liegt das Und-Kloster.
Ein besonderes Flair bietet die Altstadt von Stein. Hier lebte jahrzehntelang der berühmteste Kremser Künstler Martin Johann Schmidt, genannt Kremser Schmidt, der durch seinen volkstümlichen Barockstil bekannt wurde. Eines seiner Altarbilder und das Deckenfresko kann man sich in der Pfarrkirche ansehen. Situated where the Danube River abuts the forested foothills of the Alps, humans have settled here for well over two thousand years. Renowned not only for its long history as a capital of a great empire and for being a long-standing center of culture .... Vienna continues to attract throngs of immigrants and to lure millions of visitors each year to its shores.
This is a travelogue video slideshow geared for tourists contemplating a trip or a return visit to Vienna which aims to capture most of the famous landmarks and sites that dot the Austrian capital. It also attempts to incorporate a slice of the cultural, culinary, mercantile, horticultural, and recreational riches that are also so much a vital part of Vienna today. In addition, seasonal and special events that contribute greatly to the wide variety of life in this city on the Danube River are sampled.
For better or worse, these are all my own pictures - taken at various times over the last few years with my trusty Panasonic camera. Thankfully Vienna is extremely photogenic and so beautiful and dynamic that my lack of photographic skills can often be glossed over. It also helps that it is really splendidly illuminated at night. All photos were taken within the city limits and there are pictures from each of the 23 districts that comprise the city proper.. So now, if you are interested in a visual tour of a fascinating and very cool metropolis, sit back with a wine or a beer (Austrian wine or beer preferably!) ... listen to the lilting strains of Johann Strauss's The Blue Danube as performed by the famed Vienna Philharmonic .... and waltz through the streets and landscapes of both modern and old Vienna.
