Top 10 places to visit in UDUPI / UDIPI
Udupi is a district/city in the south-west Indian State of Karnataka. Udupi, also known as Rajata Peetha and Shivalli, a centre of pilgrimage, is situated about 58 km north of Mangalore and about 422 km north-west of Bangalore.
1) Sri Krishna Mutt
is a famous Hindu temple dedicated to god Krishna. Surrounding the Sri Krishna mutt there are several temples, This mutt was founded by the Vaishnavite saint .Shri Madhwacharya in the 13th century. The Paryaya festival is held on even years like 2008, 2010, 2012 and 2014. Legend has it that once Kanakadasa, a pious worshiper and devotee of Lord Krishna, was not allowed to enter into the temple, he prayed with intense devotion, Lord Krishna was so pleased that the statue turned back to where Kanakadasa was praying, and the wall before Kanakadasa broke up to allow him to gaze upon his heavenly form at the back of the mutt. Till today devotees worship Lord Krishna by praying through the same window that Kanakadasa was with a view, this window is known as Kanakanakindi.blessed
2) Chaturmukha Basadi
on the slopes of rocky hill at Karkala in Udupi district stands one of the astounding architectural masterpiece- Chaturmukha Basadi. It has four identical pillared entrances from four directions. All four entrances lead to the main hall called Garbhagriha. Enclosed in Garbhagriha are idols of YakshiPadmavati and 24th Jaina Tirthankara.
3) Malyadi Bird Sanctuary
is a blessing for bird lovers, there has been numerous sightings of birds like Whistiling Teals, Purple Moorhen, White Ibis, Comb duck, Carmorants and Darters. This place which is spread over 1.5 sq. kms area is actually an abandoned clay query. Over the past few years the number of birds visiting this place has increased greatly, making this premise an upcoming centre for many bird lovers.
4) Gangolli Beach
location is a distinguishing feature of Gangolli, it is lined by the river Panchgangavali to the East and Arabian Sea lies on its West. Sunset view on this beach is a must if you visit this place.
5) St. Lawrence Church
it is a Roman Catholic church in Karkala.This church being widely acclaimed as having the power to intercede with God, attracts not only the residents of Udupi District but also pilgrims from all parts of India.
6) Gomateshwar Statue
is carved out of a single stone, at a height of 42 feet, it is the second tallest statue in the state of Karnataka. Every twelve years, hundreds of thousands of Jain devotees congregate to perform the Mahamastakabhisheka, a ceremony where the Gommateshwara statue is bathed and anointed with milk, water, and saffron paste and sprinkled with sandalwood powder, turmeric, and vermilion.
7) Kapu Beach
the main attraction of Kaup beach is the Light House that is situated on the shore. The kapu light house was built in 1901 and has for these many years stood on the rocks guiding thousands of sailors and warning the presence of dangerous rocks. The beach is around 1.5 kilometres from Kaup bus depot. This beach is well kept and clean.
8) St. Mary's Island
it is also known as Coconut Island and Thonsepar, it is a set of four small islands in the Arabian Sea off the coast of Malpe.The islands form one of the four geological monuments in Karnataka state.The Islands are bereft of buildings, fences, shops. There are only covered pavilions with park benches on the shore and further
inland. Visitors can wander around freely and enjoy the hexagonal formations from vantage locations.
9) Kere Basadi
it offers a magnificent sight as it is built in the middle of a pond. It has four entrances from four directions. On the outside, there is a separate PradakshinaPatha and Garbhagudi. It is believed that the idols in the Garbhagudi belong to the 12th century.
10) Sri Amratheshwari Temple
this temple is somewhat different, amazing..well i dont have words to express what i saw over there. Shiv lingas can be seen to emerge from the ground and according to the locals the linga grows in size over time. This temple is situated Near Bus Stand Kota Post, Udupi and a must visit if you ever go to Udipi.
