Kronvalda park
Come and join ''The Celotajs'' take a stroll through Kronvalda park. Kronvalda Park was originally a recreation area used by the German Riflemen's Club. In 1883, under the guidance of Georg Kuphalt, the park was considerably extended and many new trees planted. In the 1920s, further work was done in the park, this time by Andrejs Zeidaks who intended to create a botanical garden. He built the fountain and laid many flowerbeds, including a rosarium, with over 2,000 rosebushes, and many exotic trees and plants. Today the park is the second richest in Riga with over 100 kinds of plants and trees as well as statues of Mirzo Ulugbek, Sudraba Edzus and Andrejs Upīts. The park also contains other delights such as the pavilion that was built to mark Riga's 700th anniversary in 1901; the Chinese Arbour which celebrates Riga's 800th anniversary and a fragment of the 1991 Barricades into which a portion of the infamous Berlin Wall has been placed. There is also a stone celebrating the first Latvian language theatre performance, which took place in 1868, in the hall that once stood on this site. As well as the Congress Hall, there are two other main buildings in the park: the Biological Building of the University of Latvia and the Rigas Brivostas Parvalde.
