Montgomery Woods State Natural Reserve is a 1,323-acre state-owned park located in the Coastal Range in Mendocino County, California, United States. The Reserve occupies the headwaters of Montgomery Creek, a tributary of Big River, which flows into the Pacific Ocean at Mendocino Headlands State Park. The virgin groves of Coast Redwood in Montgomery Woods are examples of a now rare upland riparian meadow habitat; most other preserved redwood groves are on broad alluvial plains. The Reserve is accessed from a parking area along Orr Springs Road 13 miles west of Ukiah, California, or 15 miles east of Comptche, California. The Lost Coast is a mostly natural and development-free area of the California North Coast in Humboldt and Mendocino Counties, which includes the King Range. It was named the Lost Coast after the area experienced depopulation in the 1930s. In addition, the steepness and related geotechnical challenges of the coastal mountains made this stretch of coastline too costly for state highway or county road builders to establish routes through the area, leaving it the most undeveloped and remote portion of the California coast. Lake Mendocino is a large reservoir in Mendocino County, California, northeast of Ukiah. It covers 1,922 acres and was formed by the construction of Coyote Valley Dam in 1958. The lake and dam provide flood control, water conservation, hydroelectric power, and recreation. The dam also includes a fallout shelter built during the Cold War era to protect against the radiation from nuclear attacks.

8. Vichy Springs Resort Ukiah
Vichy Springs is an unincorporated community in Mendocino County, California. It is located on Sulphur Creek 3 miles east-northeast of Ukiah, at an elevation of 801 feet .Although previously used by the local Native Americans, the first westerner to discover the hot springs at this location was Frank Marble, in 1848. The springs at Ukiah Vichy resemble the more famous Grand Grille Springs in Vichy, and like the springs in Vichy the waters of the springs are alkaline and carbonated. In the 1850s William Day founded the Ukiah Vichy Springs Resort, taking advantage of the 19th-century revival of hydrotherapy. By 1892 the resort was known as Doolan's Ukiah Vichy Springs. Visitors included Ulysses S. Grant, Benjamin Harrison, Jack London, Teddy Roosevelt, Robert Louis Stevenson, and Mark Twain....

11. Orr Hot Springs Ukiah
Orrs Springs is an unincorporated community in Mendocino County, California. It is located 15 miles almost directly north of Boonville, at an elevation of 1001 feet . However, it is accessible from Ukiah by following Orr Springs Rd. The Orrs post office operated from 1889 to 1911 and from 1915 to 1933. The name honored Samuel Orr, an early settler. Orr's son established a stage station and a resort that still exists as Orr Hot Springs Resort.

13. Armstrong Redwood State Reserve Guerneville
Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve is a state park of California in the United States established to preserve 805 acres of coast redwoods . The reserve is located in Sonoma County, just north of Guerneville. The reserve is in a temperate rainforest. The climate is mild and wet. The park receives an average of 55 inches of rainfall per year, almost all between September and June. Abundant fog during the summer months helps to maintain the moist conditions required by the coast redwoods.

Hiking the Fern Canyon Trail to the waterfall in Russian Gulch State Park. This trail is north of Mendocino in a fantastic state park that you need to check out. It is one of my favorite parks along this stretch of the coast and if you only have a few minutes to explore, be sure to go to the overlook and see the views of the bridge. If you have more time to explore the park, then take this 5-mile round trip hike to the waterfall.Read more at
