Upper Austria borders on Germany and the Czech Republic, as well as on the other Austrian states of Lower Austria, Styria, and Salzburg. With an area of 11,982 km2 and 1.437 million inhabitants, Upper Austria is the fourth-largest Austrian state by land area and the third-largest by population.

    Traunsee is a lake in the Salzkammergut, Austria, located at 47°52′N 13°48′E. Its surface is approximately 24.5 km² and its maximum depth is 191 metres. It is a popular tourist destination, and its attractions include Schloss Ort, a medieval castle. At the North end of the lake is Gmunden, at the south end is Ebensee. The lake is surrounded by mountains, including the Traunstein, and a number of other towns and villages surround the lake, including Altmünster and Traunkirchen.

    Pleschinger See is a lake of Upper Austria. The Pleschinger lake is a recreational area located in the northwest of the municipality Steyregg, Upper Austria. It encompasses the lake, the green belt with various parking lots, restaurants and takeaways, as well as playgrounds, camping and a small garden since 2004. For nudist, there is a separate nudist area since 29 May 1982 at the lake. Due to its location directly adjacent to the city border to Linz it is often used by the people of Linz.

    Hallstätter See or Lake Hallstatt is a lake in the Salzkammergut, Austria, located at 47°34′43″N 13°39′38″E. It is named after Hallstatt, a small market town in Austria, famous for its salt mining since prehistoric times and the starting point of the world's oldest and still working industrial pipeline – for brine to Bad Ischl and further to Ebensee. Since about 1970/1980 the only ship-mail-line of Austria crossed the lake from the railway on the east shore to the town in the west. In winters the road on the west shore tended to be blocked by high snow or the risk of avalanches. When the ice on the lake was thick enough, a sled pulled by men or horses, later a motorized track vehicle was used to transport mail and persons.     Weikerlsee is a pair of recreational lakes just south of the confluence of the Traun and the Danube in the urban district of Ebelsberg. It includes the bathing lake, a green belt, some parking spaces, toilets, a snack bar and a nudist area on the north bank of the smaller of the two lakes. A canal joins the smaller and the larger lakes. To the south of the Larger Weiklsee are the rainwater drainage basins for the Linz sewage network.

    Gosauseen are three lakes in the south-western part of Upper Austria. Their environment is part of the Austrian Alps, situated near the town of Gosau in Austria, that in turn is near to Salzburg.     Almsee, English sometimes Lake Alm, is a lake in Upper Austria's part of the Salzkammergut in the Almtal valley, 11 kilometers south of the village of Grünau im Almtal. The lake lies in the northern portion of the Totes Gebirge mountains and is about 2.3 kilometers by 700 meters wide.The lake drains through the Alm River. Since 1965, the area around the Almsee is under nature conservation. Konrad Lorenz made important observations of the greylag goose at the lake.

    The Taferlklaussee was created in 1716 by the damming of the Aurach Creek. The lake can be reached on foot by a 3.5-hour hike from the village of Altmünster in Upper Austria. The lake's clear water is of drinking water quality. In winter, the lake is used for skating and curling.
