'Kolokol' or 'Union of Communards' was a Soviet underground group, drawn from members of Leningrad's Technology Institute, Young Communists Patrol, in early 1960s. In 1962, two members of the group, Valery Ronkin and Sergei Khakhaev, wrote their mission statement 'From the dictatorship of bureaucracy to the dictatorship of the proletariat' with the subtitle 'The route to constructing communism in the USSR'. In addition to this work, the group printed and distribute two volumes of their journal Kolokol, as well as several dozen pamphlets among students at Leningrad's universities and to people leaving the city's stations to go on camping expeditions or join the communists who were developing new territories for agriculture. Fifty years ago, on 12th June 1965, the first seven members of the group were arrested. They were sentenced to prison terms of varying lengths. Valery Ronkin and Sergei Khakhaev were given the longest sentences: seven years, followed by three years of exile. Ten years after their arrest, on 12th June 1975, the group met again in Leningrad. They have gathered every year since then.
This film is based on interviews with nine members of the Kolokol group and was first shown on 12th June 2015, on the 50th anniversary of their arrest.
