Smith Falls, at 63 feet , is the highest waterfall in the state of Nebraska and the centerpiece of Smith Falls State Park. The state park and falls are located 15 miles east-north east of Valentine, Nebraska and 3 miles south west of Sparks, Nebraska, on the south side of the Niobrara National Scenic River. Access to the falls is via a footbridge across the river from the north side of the park.

Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge is located in the U.S. state of Nebraska and includes 19,131 acres . The refuge borders the Niobrara National Scenic River on the west and is managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. From 1879 to 1906, the Fort Niobrara Military Reservation was located on what later became refuge lands to house a garrison of the U.S. Cavalry. After the fort was closed, the effort to preserve the region as a wildlife refuge culminated in the creation of the refuge on January 11, 1912. In 1991, Congress set aside 76 miles for preservation under the management of the National Park Service with assistance from the local Niobrara Council. The Cowboy Trail is a rail trail in northern Nebraska. It is a multi-use recreational trail suitable for bicycling, walking and horseback riding. It occupies an abandoned Chicago and North Western Railway corridor. When complete, the trail will run from Chadron to Norfolk, a length of 321 miles , making it the longest rails-to-trails conversion in the United States. It is Nebraska's first state recreational trail. The trail runs across the Outback area of Nebraska.

The Bryan Bridge brings U.S. Route 20 over the Niobrara River in Cherry County, Nebraska, near Valentine. It was built in 1932 and is a pin-connected arch bridge that is designated Most Beautiful Steel Bridge in its year, out of bridges costing less than $250,000, by the American Institute of Steel Construction. It is named after then-sitting Nebraska governor Charles W. Bryan. According to its NRHP nomination, it is significant in the area of structural engineering on a state level as an excellent and well-preserved example of a pin-connected cantilever arch bridge.
