Kaali is a group of 9 meteorite craters in the village of Kaali on the Estonian island of Saaremaa
Scholars maintain that the event figured prominently in regional mythology.
It was, and still is, considered a sacred lake. There is archaeological evidence that it may well have been a place of ritual sacrifice.
At some point during the early Iron Age, the lake was surrounded by a stone wall 470 meters long, with a median width of about 2.5 meters and an average height of 2.0 meters.[citation needed]
Finnish mythology has stories that may originate with the formation of Kaali.
One of them is in runes 47, 48 and 49 of the Kalevala epic: Louhi, the evil wizard, steals the Sun and fire from people, causing total darkness.
Ukko, the god of the sky, orders a new Sun to be made from a spark. The virgin of the air starts to make a new Sun, but the spark drops from the sky and hits the ground. This spark goes to an Aluen or Kalevan lake and causes its water to rise. Finnish heroes see the ball of fire falling somewhere behind the Neva river (the direction of Estonia from Karelia). The heroes head in that direction to seek fire, and they finally gather flames from a forest fire.
According to a theory first proposed by Lennart Meri, it is possible that Saaremaa was the legendary Thule island, first mentioned by ancient Greek geographer Pytheas, whereas the name Thule could have been connected to the Finnic word tule ((of) fire) and the folklore of Estonia, which depicts the birth of the crater lake in Kaali. Kaali was considered the place where The sun went to rest.
The impact is thought to have happened in the Holocene period, around 3,500 years ago.The estimates of the age of the Kaali impact structure (Saaremaa Island, Estonia) provided by different authors vary by as much as 6000 years, ranging from ~6400 to ~400 before current era (BCE).
A study based on elevated Ir signal in a nearby bog suggested much younger age of 4th century BC. The craters were formed by a meteor with an estimated impact velocity of between 10 and 20 km/s with a total mass of between 20 and 80 metric tonnes. According to some researchers the meteor arrived from the north-east
At an altitude of 5–10 km, the meteor broke into pieces and fell to the Earth in fragments, the greatest of which produced a crater with a diameter of 110 m and a depth of 22 m. The explosion removed approximately 81,000 cubic meters of dolomite and other rocks and formed a 7–8 km tall, extremely hot gas flow. Vegetation was incinerated up to 6 km from the impact site.
Lennart Meri's best known work is perhaps Hõbevalge, which translates into Silver White and was published in 1976.
It reconstructs the history of Estonia and the Baltic Sea region. The Estonian language belongs to the Finnic group of the Uralic languages and Estonian is closely related to Finnish and distantly related to Hungarian.
As in his other works, Meri combines documentary sources and scientific research with his imagination. If geography is prose, maps are iconography,
Meri writes. Hõbevalge is based on a wide-ranging ancient seafaring sources, and carefully unveils the secret of the legendary Ultima Thule. The name was given in classical times to the most northerly land, reputedly six days' voyage from Britain. Several alternative places for its location have been suggested, among them the Shetland Islands, Iceland, and Norway.
According to Meri, it is possible that Thule derives from the ancient Estonian folk poetry, which depicts the birth of the Kaali crater lake in Saaremaa. In the essay Tacituse tahtel (2000), Meri examined ancient contacts between Estonia and the Roman empire and notes that furs, amber, and especially Livonian kiln-dried, disease-free grain may have been Estonia's biggest contribution to the common culture of Europe – in lean years, it provided seed grain for Europe.

Sõrve Peninsula (Estonian: Sõrve poolsaar) is a peninsula which forms the southernmost section of the Estonian island Saaremaa.
Its length is 32 km, and its maximum width 10 km. South of it lies Irbe Strait.
Administratively, it comprises Torgu Parish and Salme Parish, both in Saare County
Historically, the peninsula had considerable military significance, dominating the Irbe Strait and the sea route to Riga.
In the first half of the 20th century strong coastal batteries were installed on it by Imperial Russia up to 1917 and then by the Soviet Union after 1940.
In the course of World War II, the peninsula saw major fighting between Soviet and German forces, first in 1941 with the Germans attacking and the Soviets defending, and again during the Moonsund Landing Operation in 1944 with the roles reversed.
Even now it is dangerous to walk in undeveloped forest areas because a lot of unexploded ordnance remains from the fighting.
The Sõrve peninsula is also known for its unique and special natural attractions. Many rare species of birds, flowers and insects can be found throughout Sõrve.
At the southern end of the peninsula, Sõrve sits and as a continuation to it a series of rocks in Irbens sund.
According to legend, the rocks arose with the help of Stora Tõll, who threw stones after the Old Devil when he drove him out of the country.
Heavier blocks fell closer and easier a little further away.
Good to know: Sõrve Peninsula has been mentioned for the first time in 1234.
Sõrve Säär is one of bird watchers' hunting places.

Kaarma Church of Saints Peter and Paul
Kaarma one-nave church was established in the early 13th century and was later rebuilt to be a two-nave church.
Church is decorated with ornamental and figural fragments of frescos in secco technique that are the same age as initial church.
Near pulpit You can see polychromous wooden sculpture of St.Joseph that belongs to Northern-German school. Interesting to know:
First time on Saaremaa the supporting pillars were used in Kaarma church The eastern wall of church's chorus is decorated with rare in Estonia triple window The prototype for pulpit of Kaarma church was a pulpit of Lübeck church.
Gothic Architecture is an architectural style that flourished in Europe during the High and Late Middle Ages. It evolved from Romanesque architecture and was succeeded by Renaissance architecture. Originating in 12th century France.
It is in the great churches and cathedrals and in a number of civic buildings that the Gothic style was expressed most powerfully, its characteristics lending themselves to appeals to the emotions, whether springing from faith or from civic pride. A great number of ecclesiastical buildings remain from this period, of which even the smallest are often structures of architectural distinction while many of the larger churches are considered priceless works of art and are listed with UNESCO as World Heritage Sites. For this reason a study of Gothic architecture is often largely a study of cathedrals and churches.
