Whenever you look for tourist information on Malaga, if you browse the menus of the walking tour companies, if you peruse the 'best things to do in' lists, one place comes up time and time again. The Mercado Central de Atarazanas. Simply because, like most old school markets in Mediterranean countries, the confluence of local fresh produce, preserves and delicacies, sold by the city residents with all their genuine charm and passion, in an old characterful building, creates a mini-world full of colour, of sensation, of taste; one that you can see, smell, and touch; one you can hear, from the gravelly voices of fishmongers barking out their prices, to the chatter of locals and curious tourists; one you can experience by strolling around, with or without a guide. Take photos, stop to graze on tapas and snacks, nibble samples of rich sausage, nuts and dried fruits, olives in a wild variety of guises, shapes and colours. It is a fabulous assault on the senses, unforgettable and in real time.
The market is open daily from 8am until 2pm, except on Sundays. It is located centrally, behind the tall old buildings that line the central Alameda. If, foolishly, you are going by car to the old town, you can usually park in the Camas underground parking, a mere block away. Far better to be car-free in the city, the public transport is cheap and plentiful.
