It's been a center for fishing and trade since the 12th century, a maritime tradition that's reflected in its Vieux Port (old harbor) and huge, modern Les Minimes marina. The old town has half-timbered medieval houses and Renaissance architecture, including passageways covered by 17th-century arches.

The garden is a natural suntrap and offers outstanding views of the Château de Verteuil which sits on the opposite bank of the river.
Verteuil is a very pretty medieval village with narrow alleys and stunning architecture. It has an excellent range of amenities including two boulangeries, a small general store, a post office, a pharmacy and a bar and restaurant. The bustling town of Ruffec is just 6km away with a wide range of shops and supermarkets. This is an ideal location for exploring the region being just 5 minutes from the N10 main road -- this also means that the airport in Poitiers is just 45 minutes away whilst the TGV high-speed rail line can be accessed in Angoulême, just 30 minutes away.
