Visite touristique / Touristical visit of Vientiane (Laos)

Vientiane Capital-City of Charm in English Version
Vientiane, the Capital of Laos
Vientiane is the capital and largest city of Laos, situated on the Mekong River near the border with Thailand. Vientiane became the capital in 1563 due to fears of a Burmese invasion. Vientiane was the administrative capital during French rule and, due to economic growth in recent times, is now the economic centre of Laos.
Compared to the hectic, bustling capitals in other Southeast Asian countries, Vientiane's deliciously relaxing atmosphere makes it feel like the small town it is. After you've done the round of temples, the best thing to do here has always been to wander down to the riverside, relax with a cold Beerlao - the Lao national beer - and watch the sun set over the Mekong.
Of course, the booming tourism industry is changing this by slowly but surely bringing the excesses of Thailand and China to this formerly sleepy city. Just like any other Southeast Asian capital/major city, Vientiane is experiencing a building boom. Even its Presidential Palace is having a major makeover-addition and a new convention centre has been built.
Settled since at least 1000 AD, Vientiane became an important administrative city of the Kingdom of Lan Xang in 1545. Ransacked in 1828 by the Siamese, Vientiane sprung back in time to be again named the capital of the protectorate of Laos by the French, a position it kept after independence and after the communists took over in 1975. Today Vientiane is the largest city in Laos, with an estimated population of 210,000 in the city itself and some 700,000 in Vientiane Prefecture.

Wat Si Saket Temple Museum, Vientiane, Laos
The temple museum of Wat Si Saket is my favourite inner city temple.....
The temple was founded in 1818 by King Anouvong & is one of Vientiane's oldest surviving temples. Together with That Luang and Haw Pha Keew, they form the city's most important Buddhist sites. Although a working temple, the Ubosot and surrounding cloister have been designated a museum.
The Hall is built in the Siamese style with a five-tiered roof (currently undergoing restoration) and a surrounding terrace. Enclosing the courtyard is a cloister whose interior walls contain over 2000 small niches each housing two small Buddha images. Within the cloister are over 300 large Buddha images.........

COPE Visitor Centre in Vientiane Prefecture, Laos
COPE Vientiane is a non-profit organisation in Laos which provides prosthetic limbs, mobility assistance and rehabilitation for Lao people who can’t afford it. We took a look at their visitor centre in Vientiane, Laos’s capital, this morning. It was one of those incredible places that had me rushing home to get a post written and published straight away. If you are in Laos or Vientiane, you really must add this museum to your itinerary, it will open your minds and your hearts and with kids it’s an essential part of their travelling education.
Cluster Bombs in Laos
Were you aware of any of this?
Laos is still suffering the effects of the horrific bombings in the 1960s. Over 2 million tons of ordnance were dropped on Laos between 1964 and 1973, about 30% didn’t explode. Laos is still littered with UXO, people die and are horrifically injured, still, today.
Last year, 2012, 4 children died when they made a fire in their garden. The unexploded bomb had been lying in the ground for years, the heat of the fire detonated it.
People die when they are gardening, farming or searching for crabs in muddy rivers. People, often children, die searching for scrap metal to sell.
This is one type of cluster bomb, a casing containing hundreds of small bombies or bomblettes. Dropped from the air they spread to cover a large area. 80 million active bombies remained in Laos after the war.
COPE Doesn’t Only Help Bomb Victims
COPE Vientiane provides around 1300 mobility devices every year, including prosthetics. They don’t only deal with amputees, they help children with congenital malformations, too.
They deserve your support.
Visit the COPE centre in Vientiane, admission is free. You can buy something from the shop or make a donation to help support them.
Visit COPE Vientiane, they need your support
The COPE visitor centre is a small museum but a fantastic one. It’s not at all harrowing and it’s very suitable for children. They can touch, handle and try out the mobility devices on display. My children learnt a lot this morning and so did I. I’d like to thank Cope Laos for that and for their valuable work for the Lao people.
I already knew that Laos is the most bombed country per capita IN THE WORLD. We’ve seen parts of bombs used as flower pots, decorations and recycled into useful objects all over Laos. I didn’t realise that the bomb casings we saw were from cluster bombs. I didn’t ever really know what a cluster bomb was.
Most countries in the world have banned the use of cluster bombs, the United States, Israel, Russia, China, India and Pakistan haven’t. Doesn’t that say a lot?
The young man in the picture was there this morning at COPE Vientiane. He has lost his sight and his hands. He is part of the global campaign to ban cluster bombs. Please go, the cope visitor centre is fairly small and will only take up maybe half a day for you, this is one of the most educational museums we’ve ever visited and a real eye opener. Support Cope Laos in their important work for this wonderful country’s people.

Vientiane, the capital of Laos Laos, became a communist country in 1953 after independence from France in the ideological confrontation. It is the center of politics, economy and culture. Even though the per capita income is not high, their lives have room and happiness. Is that so? Around the world, travelers come here. First of all, I headed to Pantai where the history of Laos lives. Pantisai in the center of Vientiane city! Laos is in the spirit of life here, there are busy tourists in the commemorative photographs. I am from Thailand and the history of Laos is very interesting. Being able to be friends with strangers is another pleasure of travel. Pantosi, which means the gate of victory, is a landmark of Vientiane that is loved by travelers as well as Laotians. It is made of cement and the murals and sculptures on the inside represent Hindu myths. The top of Patuxi is used as an observatory. The scenery of Vientiane, which had to be climbed in order to see it, seemed peaceful. On the left side of the plaza there is the Government Complex with the Prime Minister's Office and the Presidential Palace across from the plaza. Landscape overlooking from Pertusai. I thought this was the symbol of Laos. The sorrow and joy of independence of the Laotian people who have undergone colonial rule. And Pardusi, whose mourning for independent heroes who devoted their lives for independence. At the top of this, there are four spiers with a tower in the middle, which symbolize five principles of Buddhism: friendship, tolerance, honesty, dignity and prosperity.

Vientiane, capital of Laos
Vientiane (Wiang Chan, IPA: [wiəŋ tɕan]) is the capital and largest city of Laos, situated on a bend in the Mekong River. Vientiane became the capital in 1563 due to fears of a Burmese invasion. During French rule, Vientiane was the administrative capital and, due to economic growth in recent times, it has now become the economic centre of Laos. The estimated population of the city is 754,000 (2009).
Although still a small city, the capital experiences a major influx of tourists. The city contains many temples and Buddhist monuments with Pha That Luang, a Buddhist stupa, one of the most famous in Laos. It lies a few kilometres outside the centre and that's why we didn't visit it.
The memorial monument, Patuxai, began construction in 1957 and completed in 1968, is perhaps the most prominent landmark in the city. While the arc de Triomphe in Paris inspired the architecture, the design incorporates typical Lao motifs including Kinnari, a mythical bird woman. You will see it in the presentation.
Further we visit a mall and special the very extensive market. In the evening there were the new-years-eve-parties with very loud performances in the centre.
