Vila Real de Santo Antonio is at the eastern end of the Algarve with views across the Guadiana river to Spain. A great town for shopping and lots of restaurants too which are very reasonably priced. Cross the river to Ayamonte either by ferry (just 10 minutes) or by car via the bridge at the end of the A22.

10. Vila Real and Castro Marim
These two frontier towns are in earshot of each other but have little in common. Sedate Castro Marim glories in its twin castles. Vila Real de Santo Antonio enjoys a livelier culture

Reunimos algumas imagens da nossa viagem à Portugal durante nossa estadia em Cádiz. A viagem é bem rápida, aproximadamente 3h e meia de carro. Foi um bate e volta de 2 dias, mas conseguimos fazer algumas imagens de Faro, da praia de Cacela e de Vila Real de Santo António.

VILA REAL DE SANTO ANTÓNIO é uma cidade raiana portuguesa no distrito de Faro, Algarve, criada por Carta Régia de 1773. No final do século XIX e início do século XX a cidade viveu prosperamente. O setor das pescas dinamizou a cidade, transformando-a num importante centro pesqueiro e conserveiro. Era também um importante porto para os barcos que transportavam minério desde as minas de São Domingos. Atualmente a cidade vive do turismo. A cultura algarvia tem em Vila Real de Santo António um importante centro de divulgação. Nesta cidade nasceram e trabalharam vários artistas que deixaram a sua marca na literatura e nas artes plásticas. Um dos mais conhecidos é António Aleixo (1899-1949), (00:04) poeta popular famoso pela ironia e crítica social. Numa rotunda da cidade presta-se homenagem a este poeta. Também Lutegarda Guimarães de Caires (1873-1935) tem um busto com um dos seus poemas num jardim à beira do rio Guadiana (2:20).
VILA REAL DE SANTO ANTÓNIO is a Portuguese city of the district of Faro, Algarve, created by Royal Charter 1773. In the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century the city lived prosperously. The fisheries sector has spurred the city, making it an important fishing and canning center. It was also an important port for ships that transported ore from the mines of São Domingos. Currently the city thrives on tourism. The Algarve culture has in Vila Real de Santo António an important center for dissemination. Here were born and worked several artists who left their mark in literature and the plastic arts. One of the best known is the folk poet António Aleixo (1899-1949), (00:04)famous by the irony and social criticism. In a roundabout in the city tribute is paid to this poet. Also Lutegarda Guimarães de Caires (1873-1935) has a bust, with one of his poems in a garden on the banks of the Guadiana river (2:20).

A localização privilegiada, no cruzamento das estradas Porto-Bragança e Viseu-Chaves, permite o seu crescimento. Após várias tentativas de povoamento deste territorio desde a época do Condado Portucalense, é com o foral de D.Dinis em 1289 que é fundada Vila Real de Panóias, que se tornará a actual cidade. A presença, a partir do século XVII, da Casa dos Marqueses, faz com que muitos nobres da corte também se fixem. Facto comprovado pelas inúmeras pedras-de-armas com os títulos de nobreza dos seus proprietários que ainda hoje se vêem na cidade.
